  • Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM) is based on the theory of Sasang (Taeyang, Soyang, Taeum, Soeum) in Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM). It is hypothesized that all of the things in the material world can be divided into the four categories of SCM. We made a new attempt to combine nutritive components, and patterns in physical activities with SCM. At first, we hypothetically divided the nutrients into 4 compartments according to SCM theory, and human body composition as well. These factors could be basically related to Sasangin Exercise Treatment (SET). Therefore, we applied sasangin theory to exercise prescription. As a research method, we hypothesized that human beings' types can be distinguished by mind and body. Mind was focused on exercise psychological aspects, and body also handled by nutrients, body compositions, body shapes, and exercise physiological aspects. For application of sasang theory to the exercise prescriptions, Taeumin as a sample sasangin was selected in this study. We concluded that in perspective of general traits, Taeumin have to reduce their carbohydrate intake volume, but greatly increase their intake of vitamins, minerals, and water in daily diet. They are also recommended exercises that can increase cardiorespiratory function and make them sweat, like endurance running, hiking, swimming, cycling, etc.

  • It is over 100 years after Lee Je Ma has proposed concept of the Sasang constitutional medicine in his book DongEuiSooSeBoWon in 1894. As well known, this concept describes four constitution of Taeyang, Taeum, Soyang, and Soeum which are deals with physical body status and shape, desease and symptoms, personal characters, and organ function. In these days there are growing needs to elucidate this Sasang concept by the scientific manner, especially by biological tools. However there are no genes revealed related to the Sasang and moreover it is not easy to give a biological evidence for the Sasang constitution. Here are some considerations about the brief history of biological research on the Sasang constitution, and some prospectives of how to do to find genes of Sasang, and which to be done for what is about Sasang.

  • The intelligent control algorithm based on the real-time biological monitoring system has been emphasized to enhance the survivability of the combat warrior in the future combat fields. In this study, AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) method was deployed to categorize the factors related to the improvement of survivability, then to determine the relative importances between them. As the details of the research process, the historical survivability determinants were firstly categorized, which was nextly judged their relative importance by the experts in the actual fileds through the survey of AHP. In this process, the consistency of the survey was investigated to filter out the error. As a result, the global priority of factors can be acquired to establish the optimized operational concepts in the intelligent warrior platform.

  • Insensitive Munition(IM) reduces the explosive weakness of munitions, at the same time, maintains its performances in the moment of discharge, which improves safety of soldiers and minimizes unexpected accidents and casualties from being shot in case of transportation, storage and military operation. Development of IM has been focused as the global trend, which was required to satisfy the demand of army that is to minimize the loss of non-battle forces and to retain the competitiveness in export abroad. In this study, we categorize all the munitions used by ROK Army, then determine the priority of IM by deploying AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) method. In conclusion, we suggest the priority of IM which is suitable to the affairs of ROK Army.

  • Since the days of early Confucianism, the nature(性) and the emotion(情) have been the methodological tool to explain the original nature of the human being, by dividing the human mind into the nature and the emotion. This study examines the interconversion(相成相資) theory of the nature and the emotion mentioned in the "Sadanron(四端論)" chapter of "Dong-uisusebowon." We have contemplated how Gi(氣) of sadness and anger mutually create each other, that of pleasure and enjoyment do as well, transforming sad nature[哀性] of the Taeyang-in(太陽人) into anger emotion, anger nature of the Soyang-in(少陽人) into sad emotion[哀情], pleasure nature[喜性] of the Taeuemin(太陰人) into enjoy emotion[樂情], enjoy nature[樂性] of the Soeumin(少陰人) into pleasure emotion[喜情] considering the circumstances in which the nature changes into the emotion based on the original texts of "Dong-uisusebowon", "Sasang-uihakchobon-gwon(四象醫學草本卷)" and "Gyeokchigo(格致藁)".

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to report the improvement in two patients with different complaints of sleep disorder treated with herbal medication based on the Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS), and hypothesize the meaning of word '更'. Methods : According to DPIDS, patients were diagnosed with Taeyang-byung no. 29 provision, and took Gamchogungang-tang herb medication 15 or 90days. The results of administration were evaluated by the hyperhidrosis disease severity scale (HDSS) and the visual analog scale (VAS). Results : After administration of Gamchogungang-tang 15 or 90days, based on 29 provision of Gamchogungang-tang diagnosed according to Shanghanlun provisions, in one case the HDSS decreased from 3 to 1 and the VAS decreased from 10 to 1. In the other case, the VAS decreased from 10 to 1. Conclusions : Each patient not only recovered from symptoms of hyperhidrosis and alopecia areata, but also from sleep disorders following administration of a single medication of Gamchogungang-tang. This case report suggests that the word '更' in the 29 provisions of Shanghanlun means sleep disorder in this case.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to report the improvement in a patient with edema treated by herb medication based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to 'A disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions (DPIDS)', a patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung, no. 46 provision and was administered with Mahwang-tang herbal medication for 30 days. The Numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to estimate the response. Results : The NRS score changed from 10 to 1 and the edema disappeared by 46th provision of Mahwang-tang selected according to Shanghanlun provisions. Conclusions : This case report suggests that the two words in the 46th provision of Shanghanlun, '陽氣重, 無汗' (Yang qi heavy, Absence of sweating) indicate a close relationship between photosensitivity and absence of sweating, thereby affecting edema in this case.

  • In this paper, effects of major design parameters of cold forging dies on die mechanics are quantitatively investigated with emphasis on shrink fit using a thermoelastic finite element method. A ball-stud cold forging process found in a cold forging company is selected as a test process and the effects of die insert material, magnitude of shrink fit, dimension of shrink ring, number of shrink rings, partition of die insert and clamping force on effective stress and circumferential stress are analyzed. It has shown that the number of shrink rings, magnitude of shrink fit, and Young's modulus of die insert material have strong influence on compressive circumferential stress in die insert but that the influence of the other design parameters is relatively weak.

  • Effects of plating conditions (dispersant concentration, plating time, and ultrasonication) on electroless Cu plating on SiC fabric woven by crossing of SiC continuous fibers vertically were studied. The ultrasonic dispersion treatment not only did not improve the dispersion of the SiC fibers, but also did not change the plating thickness. The ultrasonication in the pretreatment step of electroless plating did not improve the dispersion of the fibers, while the ultrasonication in the plating step enhanced the dispersion of the fibers and decreased the thickness of the Cu films. It was possible to control the thickness of the Cu coating layer as well as the dispersion of the fibers in the fabric by changing the plating conditions such as dispersant concentration, plating time, and ultrasonication, but it was very difficult to coat copper on the intersection of vertical fibers in the fabric.
