This study was designed to investigate the feasibility of utilizing an adaptation for selective elicitation of tactile sensations by means of transcutaneous electrical stimulation. We conducted the first experiment to investigate how the stimulation frequency affected the adaptation. Twenty healthy subjects participated in the second experiment to confirm our proposal that the perception intensity of the low-frequency vibration can be enhanced after a high-frequency adaptation, and vice versa. It was found that (1) a low-frequency stimulation did not adapt the nerve afferents responsible for the high-frequency vibration, (2) a high-frequency stimulation affected the nerve afferents responsible for the low-frequency vibration, but adapted to the pressure sensation more intensely, and (3) more than 62% of the subjects reported a more clear selective sensation after the adaptation had lessened or depressed the unwanted sensation. The observations showed that adaptation of the nerve afferent could be utilized for selective elicitation of tactile sensations.
This paper proposes the electric stimulus tactile apparatus system(TESTAS) loaded on the haptic interface using ultrasonic motors (USMs) To touch the virtual object like wall in graphic, the 6 DOF haptic interface provides force feedback to users as if it is real. But the case of sharp virtual object like a puncture, it could not provided the sense of pain, but only the reaction-force. After the TESTAS had been loaded on this haptic interface, it could provide not only the force but also the pain to users. In this way, when users take the haptic and tactile informations at the same time, they easily have a correct understanding of virtual object.
The human sense of touch provides us with an important source of information about our surroundings. Because of its unique position at interface between our bodies and the out world, touch sensation supplies sensory data which helps us manipulate and recognize objects and warn of harmful situation. But tactile sensation was recognized less important than visual sense and auditory sense but it plays an important immersing role in virtual reality and computer game. Tactile sensation can be used to influence to objects according to power and supplied sensory feedback to the player in a virtual environment. This paper investigated the characteristics of tactile sensation of human being and proposed method of sturdy using force sensing sensor, simple force modeling and data structure form for virtual reality and computer game. As a result, force distribution, depth, center point can be calculated using sensor output and this information is very effective to specific position for actions and reactions. This study can used as basic information for tactile sensation and it's application in computer game and virtual realty.

A high-intensity ultrasound wave generates acoustic streaming and acoustic radiation forces when propagating through a medium. An acoustic radiation force generated in a three-dimensional space can produce a solid tactile sensation, delivering spatial information directly to the human skin. We placed 154 ultrasound transmit elements with a frequency of 40 kHz on a concave circular dish, and generated an acoustic radiation force at the focal point by transmitting the ultrasound wave. To feel the tactile sensation better, the transmit elements were excited by sine waves whose amplitude was modulated by a 60 Hz square wave. As an application of ultrasonic tactile sensing, a region where tactile sense is formed in the air is used as an indicator for the position of the hand. We confirmed the utility of ultrasonic tactile feedback by implementing a system that provides the number of fingers to a machine by receiving the shape of the hand at the focal point where the tactile sense is detected.

Virtual reality simulations are used for education and training in various fields, and are especially widely used in the medical field recently. The education/training simulator consists of tactile/force feedback generation and image/sound output hardware that provides a sense similar to a doctor's treatment of a real patient using real surgical tools, and software that produces realistic images and tactile feedback. Existing simulators are complicated and expensive because they have to use various types of hardware to simulate various surgical instruments used during surgery. In this paper, we propose a dental surgical simulation system using a force feedback device and a morphable haptic controller. Haptic hardware determines whether the surgical tool collides with the surgical site and provides a sense of resistance and vibration. In particular, haptic controllers that can be deformed, such as length changes and bending, can express various senses felt depending on the shape of various surgical tools. When the user manipulates the haptic feedback device, events such as movement of the haptic feedback device or button clicks are delivered to the simulation system, resulting in interaction between dental surgical tools and oral internal models, and thus haptic feedback is delivered to the haptic feedback device. Using these basic techniques, we provide a realistic training experience of impacted wisdom tooth extraction surgery, a representative dental surgery technique, in a virtual environment represented by sophisticated three-dimensional models.

Piezoelectric vibrators can be good replacements of electric motors to excite touch screen of a mobile device owing to small volume and low power consumption. One problem to be solved yet for real application is larger excitation force or moment than available currently. More efficient excitation by a piezoelectric vibrator could be achieved by operating at one of resonance frequencies of the system, which must also be as close as possible to frequency range where index finger is most sensitive and increasing transmission force or moment at that frequency. In this study, dynamic models are derived for the piezoelectric exciter and an adhesive viscoelastic layer, which connect the exciter to the screen. The adhesive layer is modeled as distributed stiffness by considering its geometric shape to relative to the piezoelectric exciter. Then, equations of motion for the piezoelectric exciter and the adhesive layer are derived using Hamilton's principle. Based on this model, dynamic characteristics of the exciter will be designed to maximize the force or moment transmitted onto the screen structure.
Non-contact judgment and evaluation for products are increasingly needed along with a rapid environmental change in fashion that sows urgency in the need to implement services that allows users to judge and experience a tactile sense in a fashion product without actual contact. Technological development is required to provide users with syn-aesthetic experiences that integrate the visual, tactile and the auditory. There is also a need to conduct research to increase immersion that provides users with ICT-related experiences communicated through fashion images. The study analyzed demands for haptic communication technology by Korean users in immersive VR fashion product shopping. Accordingly, it defined haptic communication through literature research, investigated immersion in the VR environment and conducted in-depth interviews for haptic communication applicable to VR shopping. Findings show that hedonic reactions by fantasy, emotion and fun function are an important motive in selecting VR shopping. VR fashion product shopping steps were divided into 4: move to store, search in store, search of product and purchase based on offline store shopping experience. It defined the haptic communication by steps and analyzed the types of the haptic feedback to be implemented. The study results provide basic data for developing haptic communication technology that can enhance e a sense of the presence and immersion experiences that can help lay a groundwork for pilot studies on the convergence of the virtual and the real.

In walking guide robot, a guide vehicle detects an obstacle distribution in the walking space using range sensors, and generates a 3D grid map to map the obstacle information and the tactile display. And the obstacle information is transferred to a blind pedestrian using tactile feedback. Based on the obstacle information a user plans a walking route and controls the guide vehicle. The algorithm for 3D detection of an obstacle distribution and the method of mapping the generated obstacle map and the tactile display device are proposed in this paper. The experiment for the 3D detection of an obstacle distribution using ultrasonic sensors is performed and estimated. The experimental system consisted of ultrasonic sensors and control system. In the experiment, the detection of fixed obstacles on the ground, the moving obstacle, and the detection of down-step are performed. The performance for the 3D detection of an obstacle distribution and space mapping is verified through the experiment.
