Kinetics of Methyl Green Fading in the Presence of TX-100, DTAB and SDS

  • The rate constant of alkaline fading of methyl green ($ME^{2+}$) was measured in the presence of non ionic (TX-100), cationic (DTAB) and anionic (SDS) surfactants. $ME^{2+}$ hydrolyses and fades in neutral water and in this work we search the effects of surfactants on its fading rate. The rate of reaction showed remarkable dependence on the electrical charge of the used surfactants. It was observed that the reaction rate constant decreased in the presence of DTAB and SDS and increased in the presence of TX-100. Binding constants of $ME^{2+}$ to TX-100, DTAB and SDS and the related thermodynamic parameters were obtained by classical (or stoichiometric) model. The results show that binding of $ME^{2+}$ to TX-100 and DTAB are two-region and that of SDS is three-region. Also, the binding constants of $ME^{2+}$ to surfactant molecules in DTAB/TX-100 and SDS/TX-100 mixed solutions and their stoichiometric ratios were obtained.

  • The structural stability of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) solubilized by Triton X-100 (TX-100) was studied by measuring the denaturation kinetics in the dark and under illumination, and compared with the structural stability of bR solubilized by octyl-${\beta}$-glucoside (OG). In the dark, bR solubilized by TX- 100 was more stable than bR solubilized by OG. Under illumination, bR solubilized by TX-100 showed light-induced denaturation in the same manner as bR solubilized by OG. These results in the dark well correlated with the experimental results of the visible CD band. Although solubilized bR in the TX-100 concentration range of 2-50 mM showed almost identical positive CD band and did not denature in the dark at 35$^{\circ}$C, the kinetic constant of the photobleaching increased with the increase of TX-100 concentration. These results suggested that photo-intermediates of solubilized bR are destabilized by TX-100 micelles.

수계 내 테트라사이클린, 설파다이아졸, 트리톤 X-100 혼합물의 광분해 (Photodegradation of Mixtures of Tetracycline, Sulfathiazole, and Triton X-100 in Water)

  • BACKGROUND: Chemicals such as antibiotics and surfactants can enter agricultural environment and they can be degraded by natural processes such as photolysis. These chemicals exist in mixtures in the environment, but studies on degradation of the mixtures are limited. This study compares the photodegradation of Triton X-100 (TX) and antibiotics [tetracycline (TC) and sulfathiazole (STH)] when they are in a single solution or in mixtures. METHODS AND RESULTS: TC, STH, and TX solutions were exposed to UV-A for the photodegradation tests for 14 days. The residual TC, STH, and TX concentrations were analyzed by using HPLC. The TC degradation was similar regardless of the presence of TX, while the TX degradation was lower in the presence of TC. The STH degradation was similar regardless of the presence of TX, while the TX degradation was greater in the presence of STH. However, the STH degradation was slower in the TC-STH-TX mixture than in the STH-TX mixture. Also, the TX degradation was negligible in the TC-STH-TX mixture. The results show that the photodegradation of TC, STH, and TX can be different in mixtures. This can be attributed to the different emission and absorption wavelengths of each compound and interaction between these compounds and photoproducts. CONCLUSION: Overall, this study emphasizes that photodegradation of single chemicals and chemical mixtures can be different, and more studies on single compounds as well as mixtures are required to understand the fate of chemicals in the environment in order to manage them properly.

  • 양이온성 계면활성제인 Cetylpyridinium Chloride(CPC)와 비이온성 계면활성제인 Triton X-100(TX-100)의 혼합계면활성제가 n-알코올(메탄올, 에탄올, 1-프로판올, 1-부탄올 및 1-펜탄올) 수용액에서 나타내는 임계미셀농도값($CMC^*$)을 25$^{\circ}C$에서 UV 분광광도법으로 측정하였다. 이들 $CMC^*$ 값들로부터 여러 가지 열역학 함수값들을 유사상태분리모델(pseudo-phase separation model)을 이용한 식에 의해 계산하였으며 그 값들을 상호 비교하였다. 그 결과 n-알코올들을 첨가한 CPC/TX-100 혼합계면활성제의 미셀화는 비이상적 혼합미셀모델과 잘 일치하였으며, 이상적 혼합미셀모델과는 음의 벗어남을 보였다.

Study of Kinetics of Bromophenol Blue Fading in the Presence of SDS, DTAB and Triton X-100 by Classical Model

  • In this paper, kinetics of reaction between Bromophenol blue (BPB) and $OH^-$, called fading, has been studied through a spectrophotometric method in the presence of nonionic Triton X-100 (TX-100), anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) surfactants. The influence of changes in the surfactant concentration on the observed rate constant was investigated. The results are treated quantitatively by pseudophase ion-exchange (PPIE) model and a new simple model called "classical model". The binding constants of BPB molecules to the micelles and free molecules of surfactants, their stoichiometric ratios and thermodynamic parameters of binding have been evaluated. It was found that SDS has nearly no effect on the fading rate up to 10 mM, whereas TX-100 and DTAB interact with BPB which reduce the reaction rate. By the use of fading reaction of BPB, the binding constants of SDS molecules to TX-100 micelles and their Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were obtained and when mixtures of DTAB and TX-100 were used, no interaction was observed between these two surfactants.

Kinetics Study of Malachite Green Fading in the Presence of TX-100, DTAB and SDS

  • The rate constants of alkaline fading of malachite green ($MG^+$) was measured in the presence of nonionic (TX-100), cationic (DTAB) and anionic (SDS) surfactants. This reaction was studied under pseudo-first-order conditions at 283∼303 K. The rate of fading reaction showed noticeable dependence on the electrical charge of the used surfactants. It was observed that the reaction rate constants were increased in the presence of TX-100 and DTAB and decreased in the presence of SDS. According to Hughs-Ingold rules for nucleophilic substitution reactions, the electric charge of MG/surfactant compound along with decrease in dielectric constant of $MG^+$ micro-environment in this compound varies the rate of fading reaction. Binding constants of surfactant molecules to $MG^+$ were calculated using cooperativity, pseudo-phase ion exchange and classical models and the related thermodynamic parameters were obtained by classical model. The results show that the binding of $MG^+$ to TX-100 is exothermic and binding of $MG^+$ to DTAB and SDS in some concentration ranges of the used surfactants is endothermic and in the other ones is exothermic.

Extractive fermentation of Monascus purpureus promotes the production of oxidized congeners of the pigment azaphilone

  • Monascus is a source of food colorant with high productivity of the pigment azaphilone. Monascus azaphilone (MAz) is biosynthesized through a single non-reducing polyketide pathway, the major components of which are ankaflavin (1), monascin (2), rubropunctatin (3) and monascorubrin (4); valuable biological activities have been reported for these compounds. Thus, various culture conditions were explored to reduce the cost of culture ingredients, enhance productivity and modulate compound composition. In the present study, we examined an extractive fermentation (EF) method with Diaion HP-20 resin (HP20) in direct comparison to a previously explored method involving Triton X-100 (TX100) to explore the modulated production of the major MAzs. We employed wild-type Monascus purpureus as well as two derivative recombinant strains (${\Delta}mppG$ and ${\Delta}mppE$) that are known to have differential MAz profiles as that of the wild-type strain. The HP20 resin was capable of modulating the MAz profile in favor of orange MAzs 3 and 4, oxidized congeners in this class, as was TX100-a phenomenon not previously observed for TX100 EF with Monascus anka. These finding substantiate that HP20 can be employed for the selective production of oxidized MAz and for diversifying the culture conditions used for Az production.

혼합계면활성제의 수용액에서 4-ethylaniline의 가용화에 관한 연구 (Study on the Solubilization of 4-ethylaniline in the aqueous solutions of mixed surfactants)

  • 혼합계면활성제들의 임계미셀농도(CMC)값과 그 용액에서 4-ethylaniline의 가용화상수(Ks) 값을 UV-Vis법으로 측정하고 분석하였다. 그 결과 TTAB/LSB와 TTAB/TX-100 혼합계면활성제들은 이상적 혼합 미셀화로부터 크게 벗어나지 않았다. 그러나 SDS/LSB와 SDS/TX-100 혼합시스템은 큰 음의 벗어남을 보였다. 이러한 차이는 미셀 상에서 두 성분들의 상호작용의 세기가 서로 다름으로 나타났으며, 이것들이 4-ethylaniline의 가용화에 크게 영향을 미침을 알 수 있었다. 순수 계면활성제 중에 음이온 계면활성제인 SDS가 다른 계면활성제보다 더 큰 Ks값을 보였으며, Ks값은 SDS≫TTAB≧LSB>TX-100 순으로 감소하였다. 그리고 혼합계면활성제에 의한 Ks값은 그것을 구성하는 순수 계면활성제의 Ks값보다 더욱 큰 값을 나타내었다.

ATSC-DTV의 송신기 식별을 위한 워터마킹용 확산코드에 관한 연구 (A Study of Spreading code for Watermarking of TxID of ATSC-DTV)

  • 본 논문에서는 지상파 디지털 방송시스템의 단일 주파수망 (SFN; Single Frequency Network) 구성을 위해 DTV (Digital Television)의 TxID (Transmitter Identification)용 저간섭 ZCD (Zero Correlation Duration) 확산코드를 제시하였다. ZCD 확산 코드는 코드발생기의 구현이 용이함과 동시에 ZCD 특성을 가짐으로 인해서, TxID에서 발생되는 인접코드 간섭 (ICI; Inter Code Interference) 및 다중경로 간섭 (MPI; Multi-Path Interference) 문제를 확산코딩기법을 이용하여 근원적으로 해결해주는 역할을 하고 있으며, 주기를 가변적으로 조절할 수 있어 TxID를 위한 워터마킹 (Watermarking)시에 발생하는 Truncated error 를 제거할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) 잡음 및 ICI, MPI와 같은 다양한 간섭환경을 모의실험에 반영하여 도출된 DER (Detection Error Rate) 특성을 분석함으로써, TxID용 저간섭 ZCD 확산코드의 유용성을 입증하였다.
