A Study on the Effects of the Extension of Terrestrial TV VOD Hold-back on the Viewing Behavior focusing on IPTV & Digital Cable TV (지상파 VOD 다시보기 홀드백연장과 TV 콘텐츠 시청행태에 관한 시계열 추세 연구 - IPTV 및 디지털케이블TV를 중심으로)

  • This study deals with the effects of the extension of terrestrial TV VOD holdback on the viewing behavior focusing on IPTV & digital cable TV. And this study presents the implication by analyzing a time series trend of the digital media service. Thus researcher has analyzed the VOD performance trend of IPTV & digital cable TV, based on the real data of media player's internal fact sheet. First, researcher confirmed that the repetition of the peak value goes to January and August seasonally. Also, it was confirmed that the viewing rate of terrestrial broadcasting companies is affected by the hit drama program. And researcher confirmed that the terrestrial VOD, movie and kids VOD, and terrestrial VOD purchases is falling down by analyzing a time series relationship. Terrestrial broadcasting companies did an extension of the holdback for the purpose of trying to increase the viewership of the broadcast, but it was confirmed that it was reduced both purchasing desire VOD viewing and viewing of the broadcast audience rather. Thus the researcher expect the customer familiar policy of media players in the future.

  • As the high-speed internet access market steadily nears its maturity phase, growth is quickly tapering off and competition, intensifying. As a result telecommunications companies are at present faced with the urgent need to evolve away from a growth model based on continuous acquisition of new subscribers. The recent convergence of telecommunication and broadcasting has come about precisely at this transitional period in the telecommunications market, and is perceived by the industry both as a new business opportunity and as a threat. TV-based VOD(Video on Demand), for one, is able to attract new customers desiring multimedia services of superior quality and to lock-in existing customers. Meanwhile, the latest evolution in network development is brightening the market prospect for TV-based VOD. The service has now hit the market, deployed over VDSL networks - a next-generation high-speed internet - and advanced cable modem networks, delivering high-definition DVD-quality videos. TV-based VOD is a service whose deployment is closely linked to the evolution of subscriber networks. According to the forecast produced by the present study, based on the forecast on the post-ADSL market and a survey conducted on VOD, as post-ADSL subscribers increase from 1.53 million in 2003 to 4.44 million in 2004, and 9.87 million in 2006, the percentage of post-ADSL subscribers with intention to also subscribe to a VOD service is expected to rise from 16% to 34% in 2006. Accordingly, VOD subscribers are estimated to increase from 0.24 million in 2003 to 0.98 million in 2004 and to 3.35 million in 2006.

  • 초고속인터넷 접속서비스 시장이 성숙 단계에 접어듬으로써 성장세는 급격히 둔화되고 경쟁환경은 심화되는 과정에서 통신사업자들이 기존의 신규가입자 유치 위주의 정책에서 벗어나 초고속인터넷 가입자 인프라를 기반으로 새로운 부가 서비스 및 차별화 된 서비스의 개발을 통해 가입자 확대 및 ARPU(Average Revenue Per Unit)를 중대 시킬 수 있는 수익원 개발이 절실하다. 이러한 상황하에서 통신방송 융합 서비스는 통신사업자에게 기회와 위협이라는 상반된 현상으로 다가오고 있다. TV-based VOD 서비스는 보다 양질의 멀티미디어 서비스를 원하는 고객의 수요와 신규 고객을 유치하고 가입자를 Lock-in 시키며, 타 통신 사업자의 고객을 자사 고객으로 전환시키고자 하는 차별화 전략의 일환으로 도입되기 시작하였고, 또한 ARPU를 증대 시키고 다양한 수익원 개발의 일환으로 인터넷 접속서비스 외에 부가가치를 창출 할 수 있는 Killer Service로서 주목을 받고 있다. TV VOD 사업이 성공적으로 국내 시장에 정착될 경우, 통신사업자에게는 여러 형태의 수익원 발굴이 가능할 것으로 예상된다. 즉 가입비, 월 이용료, 부가 사용료 등과 같은 포괄적인 형태의 가입비가 주된 수익원이 될 것이이며, pay-per-view(PPV) 형태의 이용료 역시 주된 수익원이 될 것이다. 이 외에도 셋톱박스, 홈게이트웨이/서버 등과 같은 단말기의 임대와 판매를 통한 수익 창출방안과 다른 서비스들과 마찬가지로 광고도 중요한 수익원천으로 활용 할 수 있을 것이며 또한 미디어업체 또는 CP(contents provider)를 대상으로, 보안, 인증, 과금, 결제, 회원 관리, 이용정보 제공 서비스 등도 사업자의 수익원으로 활용할 이 있을 것이다. TV-based VOD 서비스는 망 진화에 따른 차세대 초고속인터넷 서비스 기술인 VDSL이나 Advanced 케이블모뎀을 이용 DVD 급 고화질의 TV-based VOD 서비스가 시작되면서 ARPU를 증대 시키고 다양한 수익원 개발의 일환으로 인터넷 접속서비스 외에 부가가치를 창출 할 수 있는 Killer Service로서 VOD서비스가 주목을 받고 있다. TV-based VOD 서비스는 가입자망의 진화 와 밀접하게 연관되어 전개되는 서비스로 Post-ADSL에 대한 예측과 VOD에 서비스에 대한 설문조사 결과를 토대로 하여 예측 한 바에 의하면 Post-ADSL 가입자는 2003년 153만명에서 2004년 444만으로 증가하고 2006년 987만 명에 이를 것으로 전망되고, VOD서비스 가입의향도 16%에서 2006년 34% 까지 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 VOD서비스 가입자는 2003년 24만 명에서 2004년 98만으로 증가하고 2006년 335만 명으로 증가하는 것으로 예측되었다.

A Study on Correlation among Viewers by Medium based on KBS PIE-TV Index

  • In order to respond to the ever-changing media environments in the era of smart and mobile technology, KBS has introduced and partially applied PIE-TV and PIE-nonTV modes that monitor the average number of viewers among the national population group by means of the sample household extraction method which is a traditional way of rating investigation. This study analyzes the correlation between the number of viewers of premiere, re-air broadcasting, and MPP channel programs and the number of OTT-based VOD viewers in reference to the data extracted from PIE-TV survey results. KBS conducted a survey for 3 months between June and August 2017 to measure the PIE-TV Index, based on which the above-mentioned correlation was analyzed with programs classified to entertainment, drama, and cultural programs. For data analysis, SPSS (Ver. 18.0 for Window, SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA) was utilized. It was assumed that when p<0.05 in the confidence interval of 95%, statistically significance would be secured. Among the 30 subjects in the simple correlation analysis, the parameter was determined by the Person correlation coefficient and the non-parameter by the Spearman correlation coefficient. Analysis results are as below: (1) As the number of viewers of premier entertainment, drama, and cultural programs was larger, the number of VOD viewers was larger accordingly. (2) As for entertainment and drama programs, as the number of re-air broadcasting viewers was larger, the number of VOD viewers decreased accordingly. (2) As for entertainment and drama programs, as the number of MPP viewers was larger, the number of VOD viewers decreased accordingly. It is expected that this statistical data can be utilized for strategic planning of MPP channel lineups including terrestrial TV broadcasting, cable TV, etc.

  • Digital cable TV(DCATV) is totally different with a existing TV which is passive, and can pick the contents anytime we want. It is very popular in many houses and we can see bright future with this. This study will show a standard that is a suitable and convenient VOD menu category for 20's through a various usability test. Moreover it will be provided new menu style and GUI through the preferences. For this, we found expected problems first through the heuristic analysis and did iterative usability test to verify and improve these problems. As a result of that, we improved errors of VOD menu structure and suggested new menu style including metaphor, colour and icon users can recognize easily. That is, VOD categories should be grouped among definite meanings. And we found using convenience is more important than new discovery of method on menu style for experienced users. This study can be not only based data when DCATV menu is renewed but also can be used as a reference data when designing other DCATV menu.

  • In this paper, we propose the development of an eBook Service System based on VOD Broadcasting Contents(eBSS-VOD) which protects the illegal copy through the effective DRM strategy. Here, eBSS-VOD is composed of three sub-systems - eBook server management system, ePub Builder, and eBook App - according to the functional points of view. The eBook server management system operates to manage the eBooks, the encription keys, the VOD contents, the membership and the history of users' viewing log. The ePub Builder assists to produce eBooks by DRM strategy. The eBook App provides users with the utility services of VOD viewing and eBook purchase processing. The proposed eBSS-VOD, differently from the current eBook systems, helps to increase the users' interests in reading books and to motivate the users' purchasing needs and it also makes new distribution channel for eBooks based on VOD broadcasting contents through smart applications. We provides the differentiated eBook builder which are based on ePub3.0 and DRM strategy. Through empirical survey results on users' interests and purchase intention for eBooks, we show that the proposed eBSS-VOD has the comparative effects compared to the current systems.

Study on the Relationship between the Pay TV Subscriber's Genre Preference and VOD Purchase : Focusing on the Movie VOD of IPTV Service (<유료 방송 가입자의 장르 선호도와 VOD 구매의 관계에 관한 연구:IPTV 영화 VOD 이용을 중심으로>)

  • This paper investigates the relationship between the Pay TV subscriber's genre preference and VOD purchase by analyzing actual purchase data of movie VOD of IPTV subscribers for 8 months. The result shows as follows. First, in case of purchasing movie contents below 4000 won, user's genre preference was higher than that of using contents over 4,000 won. This means the subscribers tend to follow their genre preference when the mass-typed recommendation is limited. Second, those who purchase foreign contents show higher genre preference than those who purchase domestic movies. Third, subscribers who purchase more frequently and much more tend to use more diverse genres. Heavy users or those who have higher willingness to pay would consume more diverse contents. It implies that VOD use would increase by supplying the personal recommendation service based on the subscriber's genre preference.

  • VOD(video on demand) is a video service by users' order, that is, a video service on demand. That means the users can select and watch the video content that has been saved on sewer, out of broadcasting in the usual process like TV. At present the client of VOD system bases on PC. As the PC-based client uses the software MPEG decoder, the main processor specification has an effect on the capacity. Also people, who don't know how to use their PC, cannot be provided the VOD service. The purpose of this paper is to show the process of the development the VOD client system Into the embedded type with hardware MPEG-4 decoder. The main processor is the SC1200 of x86 Family in National Semiconductor with a built-in video processor and the memory is 128Mbyte SDRAM. Also, in order that the VOD service can be provided using the Internet, the Ethernet controller is included. As the hardware MPEG-4 decoder is used in the embedded VOD client system, which is developed, it can make the low capacity of the main processor. Therefore it is able to be developed as a low-price system. The embedded VOD client system is easy for anyone to control easily with the remote control and can be played through TV.

  • For VOD systems, it is important to provide QoS to more users under the limited resources. To analyze QoS issues in real environment, we implement clustered VOD server and embedded client system based on the Linux open source platform. The parallel processing of MPEG data, load balancing for nodes and VCR like functions are implemented in the server side. To provide more user friendly interface, the general TV is used for a VOD client's terminal and the embedded board is used supporting for VCR functions. In this paper, we measure the performance of the implemented VOD system under the various user requirement features and evaluate the sources of performance limitations. From these analyses, we propose the dynamic admission control method based on the availability memory and network bandwidth. The proposed method enhances the utilization of the system resource for the more QoS media streams.

  • In this study VOD usage patterns(VOD use and paid amount) of IPTV users were investigated reflecting the level of media use characteristics such as TV viewing time, star preference, and genre preference. Also the impact of media using characteristics and the evaluation of guide channel on the intention to use VOD was analyzed. The web survey was conducted against the respondents who have used VOD and guide channel. The results are as follows. Among the media usage characteristics, star preference has the impact on the VOD use, while genre preference has relation to the willingness to pay for VOD. Secondly, the intention to view the guide channel, entertainment of the channel, and the users' genre preference have significant impacts on the intention to use VOD. Therefore, it is necessary to raise the viewing rate of guide channel by providing the customized promotion strategy and diverse events based on the analysis of VOD usage.
