Correlation between Genre and Image Expression Technique of TV Drama (TV 드라마의 내용상의 장르와 영상표현기법의 상관성)

  • With the increase of weight and influence of TV drama, many researchers began to publish papers on TV drama. However, those papers were mainly focused on social meaning and viewing motives and attitudes of TV audience. However, only a few papers researched about television image production techniques, such as 'Relationship between TV ratings and image production techniques', 'Transition process of TV drama's image production techniques', and 'Comparison of TV and film image production techniques'. According to the recent research on the relationship between TV ratings and image production techniques, TV rating is inverse proportionate to multiple camerawork and shot average duration with a very close relationship. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the relationship between TV genre and image production technique with the data of top 100 of TNS Media Korea from the year 2004 to 2008. This paper found out that history drama uses more closeup, longshot, tracking and less waist shot than other genres, with shorter shot duration and longer scene duration.

Predicting Relative Superiority of TV Drama First Episodes based on the Quantitative Competency Index of the Cast and Crew (TV드라마 참여 인물의 계량 능력지표에 기반한 첫 회 시청률 상대적 우위 예측)

  • It is not easy to predict the return on investment in the content business, and there is no index to evaluate cast & crew. The absolute number of TV ratings is steadily declining, but there is no substitute index yet. In this study, we tried to predict the relative popularity of the drama by designing the relative superiority of the individual drama viewership as the response variable and designing the relative superiority of the drama participants as the explanatory variables. We used various machine learning algorithms and added explanatory variables that were found to be useful in previous studies. As a result, with properly combined explanatory variables, a high prediction accuracy of 84% is obtained. In this study, we intend to promote the investment efficiency of the entire contents industry by predicting the relative popularity of the contents.

Development of Emotion Assessment Scale in Evaluation of Television Picture Quality (TV 화질에 대한 감성평가척도 개발)

  • The article reports findings on: (1) development of emotion assessment scale in evaluating the Television(TV) picture quality; and (2) how psychological and physical factors relate to TV picture quality. A total of 152 adjectives that specifically describe emotional reactions were first selected from a Korean dictionary of adjectives, followed by ratings on their suitability for the evaluation of TV picture quality. The final selection of 19 adjective, based on the reported rating scores greater than 4.1, were used on 126 college students who were asked to perform similarity ratings on the adjectives. Based on factor analyses (i.e., principal component analysis with oblique rotation) on the similarity of scores, the following adjectives were selectively chosen for the development of the new emotion assessment scale: 'neat-messy', 'refreshing-gloomy', 'clean-dirty', 'comfortable-tense', 'smooth-rough', 'bright-dark', 'gorgeous-plain', 'diverse-monotonous', 'satisfying', 'natural', and 'sensuous'. These adjectives composed into two distinct constructs, 'cleanness or smart' factor and 'gorgeousness' factor, which demonstrated sensitivity to changes in brightness, contrast, color, and tint in the TV picture quality, except for changes in sharpness.

A Study on SNS Applications in Broadcasting Based on Analysis on KBS' Reaches on Facebook

  • According to the material about the analysis of digital consumers' lifestyle in Korea published at the end of 2016, 100% had experienced a smartphone before, and 91% had joined in digital communications. Among digital contents, 85.5% had experienced music, and 78.6% had used TV contents before. Also, SNS utility rate equaled 83.3%, and the Facebook utility rate of those in the 10's and 20's exceeded 80%. It means that it is necessary to conduct research on SNS utility in broadcasts. Based on the results of operating KBS Facebook accounts, this paper aims to compare the reaches of entertainment, drama, and culture genres and analyze correlation between the reaches and 'like' friends on Facebook and also correlation between the reaches and ratings.To address the goal, among the Facebook mentions operated within a year, 2016, this researcher analyzed 2,526 mentions to publicize entertainment, drama, and culture genres and the results of 834 million reaches and also used the data of original broadcasts' ratings. To analyze the data, this study employed SPSS Ver. 18.0 to perform the independent sample t-test and Pearson's correlation analysis. The conference interval is set as 95%, and p<0.05 is regarded to be statistically significant. According to the results, more reaches are found in entertainment, drama, and culture genres in order, and it is found to have strongly positive correlation with the frequency of 'like's. The reaches and ratings have no correlation, and there is no statistical significance found in it. It is expected that the results of this study can be applied to publicize programs efficiently for broadcasting.

Should forward approval ratings, real-time Twitter subtitles on the TV screen in TV debate Twitter influence in the election will be greatly expanded.

Characteristics and Comparison of Popular Channels on Internet Game Broadcasting: Focus on Twitch TV (인터넷 게임 방송에서 나타나는 인기 채널의 특징과 비교: Twitch TV를 중심으로)

  • This study analyzes popular channels of America's Twitch TV that centers on video game among several Internet broadcasting services. Afreeca TV de facto monopolizes the Internet broadcasting industry in South Korea; however, Twitch TV is popular around the globe and tries to expand business in Korea. Specifically, this study collects data of popular domestic/international channels on every Friday 9:00 p.m. 20 times, and examines differences of between those channels: 1) the number of the audience(users) 2) the frequency of games 3) the genre of games 4) nationality of games. Internet broadcasting streaming service does not have a concept of ratings, but it could be categorized as popular based on users connecting the channels. Thus, this study studies characteristics of Twitch TV, and further discusses the future of the Internet broadcasting.

Cable TV Violence: A Context Analysis (케이블TV에 나타난 폭력성 연구: 폭력의 맥락화를 중심으로)

  • This study content-analyzed Korean cable television programs aired from Feb. 6 to Feb. 19, 2007, focusing on the contextual variables linked to violent acts. A total of 657 PAT's (perpetrator-action-target) in the 68 programs sampled were analyzed for characters' age, sex, type, relationship, and motivation, humorization, punishment for their violent acts, and finally reality of violence. According to the results, (1) most violence occurred among male characters, who were at their ages between 20 and 39; (2) more than half of the total violent acts happened among acquaintances including family members; (3) anger, retaliation, personal or group interest, and violence for fun were ranked at the top tiers of the motivation list; (4) most violences were overlooked without punishment; (5) and about 80% of the whole violence were realistic. In terms of program types, (1) female perpetrator and victims appealed more often in drama than the other genres; (2) violence among acquaintances and simple fun as motivation were prevalent most in entertainment programs; (3) every violent act in children's programs was done by unrealistic characters. According to the analysis by program ratings, (1) while least violence appeared in '19 and older', all of the violent acts were portrayed as realistic; (2) humorization were most prevalent in the 'everyone' rating; (3) and female perpetrators and victims appealed most in the programs rated as '15 and older'. Generally, various contextualized violences displayed different distributions according to program types and ratings. The qualitative features of the current findings about cable television violence provide a fundamental data for future studies, which will explore the subsequent effects of violent media contents.

The Correlation Between High ratings TV drama and OST (높은 시청률의 TV 드라마와 OST의 상관관계)

  • 최근 TV 드라마의 장르 혼합 현상이 빈번하게 일어나고 있다. 현상의 원인으로 매번 비슷한 소재의 드라마에 익숙해져 버린 시청자들이 새로운 것을 원하게 된 것이다. 2017년 종영한 드라마 "쓸쓸하고 찬란하신(神)-도깨비"의 시청률은 성공적인 드라마로 평가되며, 더불어 그 해 발매된 드라마 OST까지 높은 순위를 기록함으로써 시청률과 드라마 OST의 상관관계에 대한 연구의 필요성을 인지하게 되었다. 연구 결과 첫 번째, 초반부 시청률과 OST 순위는 비례적이지 않다. 두 번째는 시청률이 높아지는 후반부로 갈수록 OST의 삽입 횟수가 증가했다. 마지막으로 드라마 장면에서 갈등의 최고조에 삽입된 곡은 시청률과 사용횟수에 상관없이 높은 순위를 차지했다.

A Study on Correlation among Viewers by Medium based on KBS PIE-TV Index

  • In order to respond to the ever-changing media environments in the era of smart and mobile technology, KBS has introduced and partially applied PIE-TV and PIE-nonTV modes that monitor the average number of viewers among the national population group by means of the sample household extraction method which is a traditional way of rating investigation. This study analyzes the correlation between the number of viewers of premiere, re-air broadcasting, and MPP channel programs and the number of OTT-based VOD viewers in reference to the data extracted from PIE-TV survey results. KBS conducted a survey for 3 months between June and August 2017 to measure the PIE-TV Index, based on which the above-mentioned correlation was analyzed with programs classified to entertainment, drama, and cultural programs. For data analysis, SPSS (Ver. 18.0 for Window, SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA) was utilized. It was assumed that when p<0.05 in the confidence interval of 95%, statistically significance would be secured. Among the 30 subjects in the simple correlation analysis, the parameter was determined by the Person correlation coefficient and the non-parameter by the Spearman correlation coefficient. Analysis results are as below: (1) As the number of viewers of premier entertainment, drama, and cultural programs was larger, the number of VOD viewers was larger accordingly. (2) As for entertainment and drama programs, as the number of re-air broadcasting viewers was larger, the number of VOD viewers decreased accordingly. (2) As for entertainment and drama programs, as the number of MPP viewers was larger, the number of VOD viewers decreased accordingly. It is expected that this statistical data can be utilized for strategic planning of MPP channel lineups including terrestrial TV broadcasting, cable TV, etc.

  • Since the introduction of digital broadcasting, an additional advanced service called EPG has been brought to viewers. EPG (Electronic Program Guide) helps people select channels or programs. But existing user Interfaces for EPG are not convenient enough for the viewer. TV is the media anyone can access. Therefore, the 'look and feel' user interface is needed to guide the viewer to select their favorite programs without any difficulties. Generally, TV programs can be categorized by their attributes such as genre, broadcasting hours, and TV ratings. At the present moment, those attributes are not categorized systematically enough for easy program navigation. This paper presents how to organize the attributes of TV programs systematically and offers a user friendly interface to help the viewer access their favorite programs by specifying the values of the attributes in any order comfortable to them.
