  • Social-aware video displays not only the relationships between characters but also diverse information on topics such as economics, politics and culture as a story unfolds. Particularly, the speaking habits and behavioral patterns of people in different situations are very important for the analysis of social relationships. However, when dealing with this dynamic multi-modal data, it is difficult for a computer to analyze the drama data effectively. To solve this problem, previous studies employed the deep concept hierarchy (DCH) model to automatically construct and analyze social networks in a TV drama. Nevertheless, since location knowledge was not included, they can only analyze the social network as a whole in stories. In this research, we include location knowledge and analyze the social relations in different locations. We adopt data from approximately 4400 minutes of a TV drama Friends as our dataset. We process face recognition on the characters by using a convolutional- recursive neural networks model and utilize a bag of features model to classify scenes. Then, in different scenes, we establish the social network between the characters by using a deep concept hierarchy model and analyze the change in the social network while the stories unfold.

  • This study examines dynamics in election news making. It is important to understand when and how news media produce election news in order to grasp news making and voting behavior. The news media sometimes make election news by focusing on issues and policies. Often they frame elections as a game and focus on election strategies while covering elections. This article argues that as time goes by during the election period, the number of policy news tends to decrease while the frequency of strategic news is likely to increase. Also, TV's and newspapers show distinctive patterns of election news making. In order to examine the arguments, this study categorizes election news stories into policy and strategic news stories produced during the 2020 Korean congressional elections and constructs daily time-series data of them. The results of structural break and regression analyses partially support the arguments.

  • In the age of media convergence, this study intended to empirically examine the influences of entertainment programs on the formation of public opinion in Twitter using the case of the Healing Camp, an entertainment program of SBS, featured Cheol Soo Ahn, who was a presidential candidate. Through a content analysis this study was able to directly test how public opinion was developed in Twitter and also examine the dynamics in which the messages of traditional media influence the formation of public opinion in twitter by combining Twitter and actual contents of the TV program. The study is expected to contribute to expanding a scope of scholarly attention of social media.

  • As the use of mass media in modern politics grows, its influential power is getting larger than before. Therefore, fairness of broadcasting is identified as a very important factor in the current law. In particular, whether the mass media has balanced attitude toward election issues has been a critical point, which maked the current law have separate provisons to deal with it. As for the fairness and bias, most existing studies had focused on how long the media dealt with the specific political issues, which leads to only quantitative analysis. Also, most analysis of the contents had been based on very personal judgement and evaluation of researchers rather than following the criteria which is based on scientific method. This study introduced the AHP analysis method to compare the quantitative data and qualitative data altogether, which aims to develope the indicator for weighted measures and measurement of the fairness. Research findings reveals that each broadcaster has, MBC was highly biased and KBS and SBS followed that. Compared with existing studies regarding the political fairness of the media.

  • We analyze respondents' reaction to Obama's advertisement, titled 'Fix the Economy'. These respondents are divided into three groups of democratic party, republican party and independent group. By manipulating the skin complexion of the Obama photo, participants were either exposed to the dark or light version of the Obama photograph. In order to obtain decorrelated stationary data, we have applied the discrete Fourier transform to each curve and then we have applied Fan (1998)'s adaptive Neyman test to the discrete Fourier transformed data. As a result, a significant difference is found out only in the independent group.

  • The purpose of this essay is to examine the responses of artists on nuclear experiences through an analysis of the nuclear images represented in contemporary Japanese art. Japan has previously as twice experienced nuclear disaster in 20th century. The first atomic bombs were dropped in 1945 as well as the 5th Fukuryumaru, Japanese pelagic fishing boat, exposed by hydrogen bomb test operated by the US in 1954 nearby Bikini atoll. Due to Tsunami taken place by the great earthquake that caused the meltdown of Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in March 2010, Japan is being experienced a nuclear disaster again. Despite practical experiences, comtemporary Japanese art has avoided the subject of nuclear disasters since the end of the Asia-Pacific War for a variety of reasons. Firstly, GHQ prohibited to record or depict the terrible effect of atomic bomb until 1946. Secondly, Japanese government has tried to sweep the affair under the carpet quite a while a fact of nuclear damage to their people. Because Japan has produced numerous war record paintings during the Second World War, in the aftermath of the defeated war, most of Japanese artists thought that dealing with politics, economics, and social subject was irrelevant to art as well as style of amateur in order to erase their melancholic memory on it. In addition, silence that was intended to inhibit victims of nuclear disasters from being provoked psychologically has continued the oblivion on nuclear disasters. For these reasons, to speak on nuclear bombs has been a kind of taboo in Japan. However, shortly after the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, the artist couple Iri and Toshi Maruki visited to ruin site as a volunteer for Victim Relief. They portrayed the horrible scenes of the legacy of nuclear bomb since 1950 based on their observation. Under the condition of rapid economical growth in 1960s and 1970s, Japanese subculture such as comics, TV animations, plastic model, and games produced a variety of post apocalyptic images recalling the war between the USA and Japanese militarism, and battle simulation based on nuclear energy. While having grown up watching subculture emerged as Japan Neo-Pop in 1990s, New generation appreciate atomic images such as mushroom cloud which symbolizes atomic bomb of Hiroshima. Takashi Murakami and other Neo-Pop artists appropriate mushroom cloud image in their work. Murakami curated three exhibitions including and persists in superflat and infantilism as an evidence in order to analyze contemporary Japanese society. However, his concept, which is based on atomic bomb radiation exposure experience only claimed on damage and sacrifice, does not reflect Japan as the harmer. Japan has been constructing nuclear power plants since 1954 in the same year when the 5th Fukuryumaru has exposed until the meltdown of Fukushima Nuclear Plant although took place of nuclear radiation exposures of Three Mile and Chernobyl. Due to the exploding of Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, Japan reconsiders the danger of nuclear disaster. In conclusion, the purpose of this paper may be found that the sense of victim which flowed in contemporary art is able to inquire into the response of artist on the subject of nuclear as well as the relationship between society, politics, culture, and modern history of Japan and international political situation.

  • This study is an empirical study to see if the existing media effects have an effect on the perception of the audience in the media such as newspapers, TV, movies, etc., and whether the viewing of YouTube, an internet-based new media without gatekeeper, can affect the perception of the audience. For this study, 76 university students were divided into two groups, one group was asked to watch YouTube videos about no-buy campaign of Japanese products, and the other group was asked to watch short films for four weeks each, and then the perception and attitude of the issue were measured and analyzed through a survey. The results of the analysis showed that the audience who watched YouTube videos thought that no-buy campaign was more important than the audience who did not watch YouTube videos, and that they would participate more actively in no-buy campaign. The results of this study can be meaningful in that it confirmed the effects of the agenda setting effect and the priming effect of YouTube. It is expected that the theory of the media effect of YouTube will be established as the study on the audience effect in various fields such as politics, economy, society, culture of YouTube continues.
