  • We report the syntheses and characterizations of a novel TTF derivative. To extend the mesogenic core, alkoxy naphthalenic group and short alkyl chains were introduced on either side of TTF unit, which results in asymmetric planar structure. TTF molecule is expected to show many interesting properties.

Structural Analysis and Single-Crystal EPR Study of Dimeric Cu(I) Complex with TTF Derivative

  • A Cu(I) complex with an asymmetric TTF derivative (CET-EDTTTF) is prepared from the slow-diffusion method using CET-EDTTTF and Cu(I)Br solutions and characterized by X-ray crystallography and EPR spectroscopy. Structural analysis shows Cu(I) ions are tetrahedrally coordinated to two bridging bromides, one terminal bromide, and one S atom from CET-EDTTTF. Detailed geometrical and EPR analysis identified that the dimmer molecule contains [Cu$_2Br_4]^{2-}$ anion between two [CET-EDTTTF]$^+$ radical cations. Single-crystal EPR investigation of the complex reveals that the ganisotropy is unusually big, compared to those of the previously reported TTF+ cation radicals, implying that there is significant contribution of the Cu d-orbital to the HOMO of the complex.

  • We report the first TTF compounds having columnar LC phase at room temperature. Based on the thermal, structural, and morphological observations, it was concluded that TTF derivative with long alkyl chains has highly ordered oblique columnar LC at room temperature. The new TTF derivatives have excellent oxidative stability which is desirable for a p-type (hole transport) materials.

  • A novel tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based main-chain polymer (6TTF-polymer) was successfully synthesized via a condensation polymerization between a newly synthesized dihydroxy TTF derivative and a malonyl chloride, and its chemical structure was characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Molecular weight of the 6TTF-polymer (9,030 g/mol by gel permeation chromatography) was large enough to form the ductile film. The electrochemical and optical properties of the 6TTF-polymer were further estimated by cyclic voltammetry, ultraviolet and photoluminescence spectroscopes. The highest occupied molecular orbital level ($E_{HOMO}$=-4.79 eV) and band-gap energy ($E_g$=1.91 eV) of the 6TTF-polymer suggested that TTF-based polymer could act as a good electron donating material for the optoelectronic applications.

  • TTF (tetrathiafulvalene) 유도체의 전구체로서 5,6-dimethyl-1,3-dithiolo[4,5-b][1,4]dithiin-2-thione (화합물 3)을 로손반응에 의하여 합성하였다. 치환기의 종류에 따라 1,4-dithiin이나 티오펜이 포함된 두 가지의 서로 다른 생성물이 얻어졌고, 이들은 $^{13}C$ NMR과 고 분해능 전자충돌(HREI) 질량분석 분광학으로 특성화하였다. 화합물 3의 합성은 X-선 구조분석으로도 확인되었다. 결정학적 자료: 삼사정계, 공간군 P1, a=4.145(2)${\AA}$, b=10.600(2)${\AA}$, c=12.279(2)${\AA}$, ${\alpha}=71.440(10)^{\circ},\;{\beta}=84.30(2)^{\circ},\;{\gamma}=87.31(2)^{\circ}$, Z=2, $R(wR_2$)=0.0559(0.1416). 두 가지 생성물의 생성 기구를 비교하여 설명하였다.

Synthesis, X-Ray Crystal Structure and Coupling Reactions of 4,5-($1^{\prime},2^{\prime}$-diphenylethylenedithio)-1,3-dithiole-2-thione (dPhEDT-DTT)

  • A facile synthesis of 4,5-(1',2'-diphenylethylenedithio)-1,3-dithiole-2-thione (dPhEDT-DTT) is carried out via a Diels-Alder type [2+4] cycloaddition reaction of 1,3-dithiol-2,4,5-trithione oligomer and t-stilbene. Molecular structure of dPhEDT-DTT is determined by x-ray crystallography: space group P1, a=11.694(3) Å, b=12.117(3) Å, c=14.688(3) Å, α=113.12(2)°, β=102.23(2)°, γ=107.02(2)°, V= 1699.1(7) Å3, Z=2. It turns out that dPhEDT-DTT crystallizes as a racemic compound consisting of (R,R) and (S,S) enantiomers. Coupling reaction of dPhEDT-DTO undergone in neat P(OEt)3 yields TTF(SEt)4 instead of ET derivative. When PR3 (R=OEt, OPh, Ph) is used in benzene, toluene or xylene, however, dPhEDT-DTO is decomposed.
