  • The rail passenger demand for the railroad operations required a short-term demand rather than a long-term demand. The rail passenger demand can be classified according to the purpose. First, the rail passenger demand will be use to the restructure of line planning on the current operating line. Second, the rail passenger demand will be use to the line planning on the new line and purchasing the train vehicles. The objective of study is to analyze the travel behavior of rail passenger for modeling of short-term demand forecasting. The scope of research is the passenger of KTX. The travel behavior was analyzed the daily trips, origin/destination trips for KTX passenger using the ANOVA and the clustering analysis. The results of analysis provide the directions of the short-term demand forecasting model.

  • According to increase of personal incomes, spread of automobiles, a five-day only work week and expansion of cultural life, modern people today are increasingly showing leisure time interests. Under such social circumstances in which people's spare time are gradually increasing, weekend trips accompanied with hotel staying are increasing to a greater extent rather than one-day trips. In Korea where differences between regions and four seasons are remarkable, the resort industry has developed in harmony with seasonal environments and regional characteristics. In particular, an increasing number of modern people living in the wellbeing era tends to visit spa resort hotels for recreation and health. This study intends to compare realities of local and foreign spa resort hotels and investigate space characteristics of local spa resort hotels for promotion of use. In this study, it has been found that the proposed addition of characteristic-oriented spaces to the existing recreation, service and basic facilities beside the fundamental accommodations would be able to remarkably elevate use of the hotels.

  • Trip-based material handling systems such as AGV systems, lift trucks, etc. are often designed with a given flow matrix (or FROM-TO chart) which is usually treated as the number of loaded trips that the devices must perform per unit time between the stations. In reality, the number of trips that would result from parts flow in a facility is dictated by the transfer batch size, i.e., the number of parts that are transferred from one station to the next in one trip. In this paper, we present analytical and simulation results aimed at determining optimal or near-optimal transfer batch sizes in manufacturing systems.

  • This paper presents an optimization based heuristic algorithm for a tour bus scheduling problem where buses consist of various kinds of sightseeing and commutation services. First, this algorithm transforms the prolem into a vehicle routing problem on whose nodes denote trips and arcs denote connections between trips. Second, a greedy heuritic routing technique is applied to find a good feasible bus-route set. Then the greedy feasible solution is improved by the simplex method using column generation technique. The algorithm provides a better near-optimal solution which gives much reductions in the total tour distance and the number of tour buses.

  • One of the most important objectives of the schedules in a container terminal is to minimize the ship operation time, which consists of discharging and loading operation times. Recently, dual cycling techniques have been used for improving terminal operations, especially for reducing the total empty trips of handling equipment. The main focus of this study is to reduce the empty trip times of yard trucks with minimum delays for ship operations. A heuristic algorithm, modified from a previous algorithm, is proposed to solve this problem. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the effect of different types of discharging and loading schedules and different locating methods for discharging containers in terms of the performance of the system, including the percentage of the dual cycle operations of yard trucks.

  • A total of 77 unanticipated trip cases induced by human errors in Korean nuclear power plants were collected from the nuclear power plant trip event reports and analyzed to investigate the areas of high priority for human error reduction. Prior to this analysis, a classification system was made on the four task-related categories including plant systems, work situations, task types, and error types. The erroneous actions affecting the unanticipated plant trips were indentified by reviewing carefully the description of trip events. Then, the events with erroneous action were analyzed by using the classification system. Based on the results for the individual cases, human error occurrences were counted for each of the four categories, also for the selected pairs of categories, to find out the relationships between the two categories in aspects of human errors. As a result, the plant systems, work situations, and task types, and error types which are dominant in human error occurrences were identified.
