The purpose of this study is to improve convergence speed of topology optimization procedure using the existing ESO method and to deal with topology decision of the truss structures according to a boundary condition, such as cantilever type. At the existing ESO topology optimization procedure for the truss structures, the adjustment of member sizes according to target stress has been executed by increasing or reducing a very small value from each member size. In this case, it takes too much iteration till convergence. Accordingly, it is practically hard to obtain optimum topology for a large scale structures. For that reason, it is necessary to improve convergence speed of ESO method more effectively. During the topology decision procedure, member sizes are adjusted by calculating approximate solution for member sizes corresponding to the target stress at every step, the new member sizes are adjusted by such method are applied in FEA procedure of next step.

The Korea Internet AS-level topology was constructed using three data sources: Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) trace collector, Internet Routing Registry (IRR), and Internet Exchange Point (IXP). It has 685 nodes and 1,428 links. The Korea Internet AS-level topology is a small regional subgraph of the massive global one. We investigate how well the Korea Internet preserves the topological characteristics of the global one or how different they are. We carefully select several topology metrics that can analyze the characteristics of the Korea Internet AS-level topology. We also investigate how well Internet topology generators can represent the characteristics of the Korea Internet AS-level topology.

The objective of this work is to integrate reliability analysis into topology optimization problems. We introduce the reliability constraint in the topology optimization formulation, and the new model is called Reliability-Based Topology Optimization (RBTO). The application of the RBTO model gives a different topology relative to the classical topology optimization that should be deterministic. When comparing the structures resulting from the deterministic topology optimization and from the RBTO model, the RBTO model yields structures that are more reliable than the deterministic ones (for the same weight). Several applications show the importance of this integration.

In this paper, we propose a suitable network topology for the Ethernet based Train Communication Network (TCN) for control system in a autonomous multi-articulated vehicle. We propose a network topology considering the structural constraints such as the number of cables and ports, and the performance constraints such as network response time and maximum throughput. We compare the network performances of star topology and daisy chain topology as well as hybrid topology, which is proposed in previous studies and a compromise between daisy chain and star topology. Here, the appropriate number of nodes in a group is obtained for the configuration of the hybrid topology. We first derive estimates of the network performance through simulation with different topologies, and then, implement the network by connecting the actual devices with each network topology. The performance of each topology is measured using various network performance measurement programs and the superiority of the proposed topology is described through comparison.

A full treatment of damping material is not an effective method because the damping effect is not significantly increased compared to that obtained by an effective partial damping treatment. Thus, a variety of methodologies has been considered in order to achieve an optimal damping treatment. One of the widely applied approaches is topology optimization. However, the high computational expenses can be an issue in topology optimization. A new efficient convergence criterion, reducible design variable method (RDVM), is applied to reduce computational expense in topology optimization. The idea of RDVM topology optimization is to adaptively reduce the number of design variables based on the history. The iteration repeats until the number of design variables becomes zero. The aim of this research is to adopt RDVM topology optimization into obtaining an optimal damping treatment. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of RDVM topology optimization, optimal damping layouts and computational expenses are compared between conventional and RDVM topology optimization.

Over the last decade, the Internet in Korea has developed rapidly. The number of ASes in Korea is 755. However, there has been no significant effort to obtain an accurate picture of the Internet AS-level topology. To construct more complete set of Korea AS-level topology data all the available data sources are critically reviewed and compared. Three data sources, which can be used to infer Korea Internet AS-level topology, are selected; BGP data of UCLA "Internet Topology Collection", IRR data and IXP data. It is known that global Internet AS-level topology follows power-law distribution. In this paper, we also investigate if the Korea Internet AS-level topology follows power-law distribution.

All the forces in the real world act dynamically on structures. Design and analysis should be performed based on the dynamic loads for the safety of structures. Dynamic (transient or vibrational) responses have many peaks in the time domain. Topology optimization, which gives an excellent conceptual design, mainly has been performed with static loads. In topology optimization, the number of design variables is quite large and considering the peaks is fairly costly. Topology optimization in the frequency domain has been performed to consider the dynamic effects; however, it is not sufficient to fully include the dynamic characteristics. In this research, linear dynamic response topology optimization is performed in the time domain. First, the necessity of topology optimization to directly consider the dynamic loads is verified by identifying the relationship between the natural frequency of a structure and the excitation frequency. When the natural frequency of a structure is low, the dynamic characteristics (inertia effect) should be considered. The equivalent static loads (ESLs) method is proposed for linear dynamic response topology optimization. ESLs are made to generate the same response field as that from dynamic loads at each time step of dynamic response analysis. The method was originally developed for size and shape optimizations. The original method is expanded to topology optimization under dynamic loads. At each time step of dynamic analysis, ESLs are calculated and ESLs are used as the external loads in static response topology optimization. The results of topology optimization are used to update the design variables (density of finite elements) and the updated design variables are used in dynamic analysis in a cyclic manner until the convergence criteria are satisfied. The updating rules and convergence criteria in the ESLs method are newly proposed for linear dynamic response topology optimization. The proposed updating rules are the artificial material method and the element elimination method. The artificial material method updates the material property for dynamic analysis at the next cycle using the results of topology optimization. The element elimination method is proposed to remove the element which has low density when static topology optimization is finished. These proposed methods are applied to some examples. The results are discussed in comparison with conventional linear static response topology optimization.
In history based parametric CAD modeling systems, persistent identification of the topological entities after design modification is mandatory to keep the design intent by recording model creation history and modification history. Persistent identification of geometric and topological entities is necessary in the product design phase as well as in the re-evaluation stage. For the identification, entities should be named first according to the methodology which will be applicable for all the entities unconditionally. After successive feature operations on a part body, topology based persistent identification mechanism generates ambiguity problem that usually stems from topology splitting and topology merging. Solving the ambiguity problem needs a complex method which is a combination of topology and geometry. Topology is used to assign the basic name to the entities. And geometry is used for the ambiguity solving between the entities. In the macro parametrics approach of iCAD lab of KAIST a topology based persistent identification mechanism is applied which will solve the ambiguity problem arising from topology splitting and also in case of topology merging. Here, a method is proposed where no geometry comparison is necessary for topology merging. The present research is focused on the enhancement of the persistent identification schema for the support of ambiguity problem especially of topology splitting problem and topology merging problem. It also focused on basic naming of pattern features.
It is shown that topology optimization is a valuable tool for the design of bridge girders. This paper is a follow-up to (Kuty${\l}$owski and Rasiak 2014) and it includes an analysis of truss members' outer dimensions dictated by the standards. Moreover, a frame bridge girder mapped from a selected topology is compared with a typical frame girder on the basis of (Kuty${\l}$owski and Rasiak 2014). The analysis shows that topology optimization by means of the proposed algorithm yields a topology from which one can map a frame bridge girder requiring less material for its construction than the typical frame girder currently used in bridge construction.
This study deals with the design of bridge girder structures and consists of two parts. In the first part an optimal bridge girder topology is determined using a software based on structure compliance minimization with constraints imposed on the body mass, developed by the authors. In the second part, an original way in which the topology is mapped into a bridge girder structure is shown. Additionally, a method of converting the thickness of the bars obtained using the topology optimization procedure into cross sections is introduced. Moreover, stresses and material consumption for a girder design obtained through topology optimization and a typical truss girder are compared. Concluding, this paper shows that topology optimization is a good tool for obtaining optimal bridge girder designs.
