This study introduces the first method that determines tropospheric ozone column directly from a space-based instrument. This method is based on the physical differences in the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) measurement as a function of its scan-angle geometry. Tropospheric ozone in September-October exhibits a broad enhancement over South America, the southern Atlantic Ocean, and western South Africa and a minimum over the central Pacific Ocean. Tropical tropospheric ozone south of the equator is higher than north of the equator in September-October, the southern burning season. Conversely, ozone north of the equator is higher in March, the northern burning season. Overall, the ozone over the southern tropics during September-October is significantly higher than over the northern tropics. Abnormally high tropospheric ozone occurs over the western Pacific Ocean during the El Nino season when the ozone amounts are as high as the ozone over the Africa.
The spatial and temporal variations of aerosol optical depth (AOD) over Northeast Asia regions have special importance in the aerosol research for estimation of aerosol radiative forcing parameters and climate change. Aerosol optical and physical properties (AOD and ${\AA}$ngstrom parameter) have been investigated by using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) Aerosol Index (AI) to estimate aerosol characteristics over the study region during 2001. Additionally, aerosol characteristics over the Korean peninsular during Aerosol Characteristic Experiment in Asia (ACE-Asia) Intensive Observation Period (IOP) have been investigated by using satellite observations. The results showed that the daily-observed aerosol data indicate seasonal variations with relatively higher aerosol loading in the spring and very low during the winter. The typical Asian dust case showed higher AOD (>0.7) with lower Angstrom exponent (<0.5) and higher AI (>0.5) that is mainly due to the composition of coarse particles in the springtime. Mean AOD for 2001 at 4 different places showed 0.65$\pm$0.37 at Beijing, 0.31$\pm$0.19 at Gosan, 0.54$\pm$0.26 at Seoul, and 0.38$\pm$0.19 at Kwangju, respectively. An interesting result was found in the present study that polluted aerosol events with small size dominated-aerosol loading around the Korean peninsular are sometimes observed. The origin of these polluted aerosols was thought to East China. Aerosol distribution from satellite images and trajectory results shows the proof of aerosol transport. Therefore, aerosol monitoring using satellite data is very useful.

This work investigates the orbital perturbations of the cubesats that lie on LEO due to Earth albedo. The motivation for this paper originated in the investigation of the orbital perturbations for closed- Earth pico-satellites due to the sunlight reflected by the Earth (the albedo). Having assumed that the Sun lies on the equator, the albedo irradiance is calculated using a numerical model in which irradiance depends on the geographical latitude, longitude and altitude of the satellite. However, in the present work the longitude dependency is disregarded. Albedo force and acceleration components are formulated using a detailed model in a geocentric equatorial system in which the Earth is an oblate spheroid. Lagrange planetary equations in its Gaussian form are used to analyze the orbital changes when $e{\neq}0$ and $i{\neq}0$. Based on the Earth's reflectivity data measured by NASA Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS project), the orbital perturbations are calculated for some cubesats. The outcome of the numerical test shows that the albedo force has a significant contribution on the orbital perturbations of the pico-satellite which can affect the satellite life time.

Meteorological mechanisms in association with long-range transport of Asian dust in April 2001 have been investigated using weather maps, satellite images, TOMS and surface $PM_{10}$ data, backward trajectories, plus modeling output results (geopotential heights, horizontal wind vectors, potential temperatures, and streamlines). The results indicated that long -range transport of Asian dust to the west coast of North America was associated with strong westerlies between the Aleutian low and the Pacific high acting as a conveyor belt. Accelerating westerly flows due to cyclogenesis at the source regions over East Asia transported pollution from the continent to the central Pacific. When the system reached the Aleutian Islands, the intensity of troughs and the westerlies were amplified in the North Pacific. Thereafter the winds between the Aleutian Islands and the Pacific Ocean were more intensified from the air flow transport of the conveyor belt. Consequently, the strong wind in the conveyor belt enhanced the dust transport from the Pacific Ocean to the west coast of North America. This was evidenced by $PM_{10}$ concentration (maximum of about $100{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$) observed In California. Further evidence of the dust transport was found through the observation of satellite images, the distribution of TOMS aerosol index, and the analyses of streamlines and backward trajectories.

Extensive forest fire activities occurred across the border in Russia, particularly east of Lake Baikal between the Amur and Lena rivers in May 2003. These forest fires released large amounts of particulates and gases into the atmosphere, resulting in adverse effects on regional air quality and the global radiation budget. Smoke pollution from the Russian fires near Lake Baikal was transported to Korea through Mongolia and eastern China. On 20 May 2003, a number of large fires were burning in eastern Russian, producing a thick, widespread pall of smoke over much of Northeast Asia. In this study, separation technique was used for aerosol retrieval application with imagery from MODIS aboard TERRA satellites. MODIS true-color image shows the location of fires and the grayish color of the smoke plumes over Northeast Asia. Aerosol optical thckness (AOT) retrieved from the MODIS data were compared with fire hot spots, ground-based radiation data and TOMS -based aerosol index data. Large AOT, 2.0-5.0 was observed on 20 May 2003 over Korea due to the influence of the long range transport of smoke aerosol plume from the Russian fires, while surface observed fine mode of aerosol size distribution increased.
The average ratio of the daily UV-B to total solar (75) irradiance at Busan (35.23$^{\circ}$N, 129.07$^{\circ}$E) in Korea is found as 0.11%. There is also a high exponential relationship between hourly UV-B and total solar irradiance: UV-B=exp (a$\times$(75-b))(R$^2$=0.93). The daily variation of total ozone is compared with the UV-B irradiance at Pohang (36.03$^{\circ}$N, 129.40$^{\circ}$E) in Korea using the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data during the period of May to July in 2005. The total ozone (TO) has been maintained to a decreasing trend since 1979, which leading to a negative correlation with the ground-level UV-B irradiance doting the given period of cloudless day: UV-B=239.23-0.056 TO (R$^2$=0.52). The statistical predictions of daily total ozone are analyzed by using the data of the Brewer spectrophotometer and TOMS in East Asia including the Korean peninsula. The long-term monthly averages of total ozone using the multiplicative seasonal AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model are used to predict the hourly mean UV-B irradiance by interpolating the daily mean total ozone far the predicting period. We also can predict the next day's total ozone by using regression models based on the present day's total ozone by TOMS and the next day's predicted maximum air temperature by the Meteorological Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5). These predicted and observed total ozone amounts are used to input data of the parameterization model (PM) of hourly UV-B irradiance. The PM of UV-B irradiance is based on the main parameters such as cloudiness, solar zenith angle, total ozone, opacity of aerosols, altitude, and surface albedo. The input data for the model requires daily total ozone, hourly amount and type of cloud, visibility and air pressure. To simplify cloud effects in the model, the constant cloud transmittance are used. For example, the correlation coefficient of the PM using these cloud transmissivities is shown high in more than 0.91 for cloudy days in Busan, and the relative mean bias error (RMBE) and the relative root mean square error (RRMSE) are less than 21% and 27%, respectively. In this study, the daily variations of calculated and predicted UV-B irradiance are presented in high correlation coefficients of more than 0.86 at each monitoring site of the Korean peninsula as well as East Asia. The RMBE is within 10% of the mean measured hourly irradiance, and the RRMSE is within 15% for hourly irradiance, respectively. Although errors are present in cloud amounts and total ozone, the results are still acceptable.

This study has investigated the suitable wavelength for detecting biomass burning aerosols. We have performed the analysis of the wavelength at 380nm in near-UV, 400nm, 412nm, 460nm, and 490nm in visible, and 2100nm in shortwave infrared regions from the Global Imager measurements. It is well known that the UV bands have the advantage of the aerosols retrieval due to the low surface reflectance and a weak effect of Bidirectional Reflectivity Distribution Function. However, the pure surface reflectances of shortwave visible bands, except 412nm, are as low as that of 380nm in near-UV over northeast Asia. In order to detect the aerosol signal, we have retrieved the aerosol reflectance as a function of wavelength based on the surface reflectivity contrast method for the period of May 2003. It is interesting that the retrieved aerosol reflectance with 460nm is slightly more sensitive than that with 380nm. Additionally, we have applied the TOMS aerosol index method to determine the best pair for biomass burning aerosols and found that the pair of 380 and 460nm results in the best signal for retrieving aerosols.

Fishman and Larson (1987) derived tropical tropospheric column ozone by subtracting stratospheric column ozone measured by the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) from total column ozone obtained by the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS). Later, the Convective Cloud Differential (CCD) method (Ziemke et al., 1998) indicated stratospheric ozone is invariant with longitude and concluded the zonal variation of total ozone determines the zonal variation of tropospheric ozone. We determined Asian dust days by constructing the standard of Asian dust using PM$_{10}$ concentrations ($\geq$150 $\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ , 24-hr average) and TOMS aerosol index ($\geq$0.7) for 5 years (1998-2002), and grouped Into long-lasted cases (LLCs, $\geq$4 days) and short-lasted cases (SLCs, $\leq$2 days) concerning the mean lasting time (about 3 days) of Asian dust. Further we performed the specific analyses associated with concentration variations and synoptic conditions by using PM$_{10}$ and TOMS data, weather maps during the dusty cases (LLCs and SLCs). As a result, the LLCs (9 cates) had large variations of PM$_{10}$ concentration as the mean of 131.1$\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ and the maximum mean of 379.8$\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ , and showed dominant features the continuous passage of deep trough caused by blocking effect and weak trough (56%, 5 cases) over Korea. The SLCs (11 cases) had relatively small variations of PM$_{10}$ concentration as the mean of 133.3$\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ and the maximum mean of 247.2$\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ , and showed passage of one weak trough (64%, 7 cases) over Korea. Thereafter, the case studies (April 7-13, 2002 of LLC and March 23-24, 2000 of SLC) performed by the simulation of MM5 with meteorological variables of the horizontal wind, potential temperature, isentropic potential vorticity, and helped to better understand the features of synoptic conditions in connection with the concentration variations for each case.
