  • The objective of this study was to test whether ZP drilling using a 1.48$\mu$m diode laser beam on mouse IVF embryos becomes effective the hatching and normal in vivo development, as a preliminary test for obtaining the additional proof that the 1.48$\mu$m diode laser could be used safely for human applications. The results obtained in this experiment were as follows: when the hatched rates of mouse embryos by laser ZP drilling according to the embryonic stage were examined until 72 hr (in case of blast tocyst: day 4 after IVF) or 120 hr (in case of 4-cell: day 2 after IVF) after treatment, the d data of laser drilled blastocysts (81.8%) was significantly higher than those of control (hatching blastocyst: day 4 after IVF) (54.2%) and laser drilled 4-cell embryos (45.5%) (p<0.05). When the effect of laser drilling on implantation rates following embryo transfer in day 3 synchronized pseudopregnant recipients was examined, the l laser drilled group (48.7%) was slightly higher than that of control group (43.6%). In addition, when the several pregnant mice delivered in two groups were analysed their chromosomal normality and tested reproductive ability, all p pups were presented normal chromosomal number (n=40) and showed normal growth and reproductive ability. Therefore, these results dem-onstrated that ZP drilling using a 1.48$\mu$m diode l laser can increase the embryo hatching and ind duce the normal pregnancy of mouse embryos.

  • Laser interferometry is widely used as a measuring system in many fields because of its high resolution and its ability to measure a broad area in real-time all at once. In conventional laser interferometry, for example out-of-plane ESPI (Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry), in plane ESPI, shearography and holography, it uses PZT or other components as a phase shift instrumentation to extract 3-D deformation data, vibration mode and others. However, in most cases PZT has some disadvantages, which include nonlinear errors and limited time of use. In the present study, a new type of laser interferometry using a laser diode is proposed. Using Laser Diode Sinusoidal Phase Modulating (LD-SPM) interferometry, the phase modulation can be directly modulated by controlling the laser diode injection current thereby eliminating the need for PZT and its components. This makes the interferometry more compact. This paper reports on a new approach to the LD (Laser Diode) Modulating interferometry that involves four-frame phase shift method. This study proposes a four-frame phase mapping algorithm, which was developed to have a guaranteed application, to stabilize the system in the field and to be a user-friendly GUI. In this paper, the theory for LD wavelength modulation and sinusoidal phase modulation of LD modulating interferometry is shown. Using modulating laser and research of measurement algorithm does comparison with existent ESPI measurement algorithm. Algorithm measures using GPIB communication through most LabVIEW 8.2. GPIB communication does alteration through PC. Transformation of measurement object measures through modulating laser algorithm that develops. Comparison of algorithm of modulating laser developed newly with existent PZT algorithm compares transformation price through 3-D. Comparison of 4-frame phase mapping, unwrapping, 3-D is then introduced.

  • Airborne contaminant particles are intruded into optical disk drive(ODD) due to the flow caused by disk rotation and can be adhered to objective lens, which causes read/write errors. Such a phenomenon can be a serious problem for high-density storage devices. The purpose of this paper is to understand the effect of particle contamination of objective lens in a CD-ROM drive on laser diode power and photo diode RF signal. The measurements of laser power and readout RF signal were carried out by using a laser power meter and a time interval analyzer, respectively. The parameters for estimating a readout-signal' distortion were its jitter and amplitude. Alumina(Al$_2$O$_3$) particles were used as test dust particles. The results show that the failure for data access happened as the degree of lens contamination was greater than 20%.

  • In the present work, we have developed the simulator to optimize the process conditions of the AR(antireflection) and HR(high-reflection) coatings for the high power laser diode. The simulator can run on the PC. After making the simple optical model, we establish the Maxwell equations for the model by the operator conversion. By using the Mathematica, we derive a matrix for the multilayer system by applying the equations to the model and optimize the AR and HR coating process conditions by obtaining the reflection rate from the matrix. We also prove the validity of the simulator by comparing the simulation with the characteristics of the laser diode which is AR and HR coated according to the optimized conditions.

  • This work forcus on the development of gas sensor that measure the concentrations of exhaust gas using diode laser. Each diode laser for exhaust gas measurement is set to work at near-IR using both DA and WMS methods. Also use of fiber-coupled optical elements makes such a sensor rugged and easy to align. On-line data acquisition and processing can be performed with a PC running LabVIEW software, and absorption signals are measured simultaneously by multiplexing method. Finally, It were experimentally compared WMS (Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy) with DA (Direct Absorption) for the accuracy.

  • We propose a new displacement measurement method using a phase modulation homodyne interferometer and a tunable laser diode as a light source to determine an arbitrary length with a resolution in the order of 10 pm. In the proposed instrument, the displacement of a movable mirror in the interferometer can be converted to a frequency shift of the tunable laser diode. We discuss the principles of the proposed method, the instrumentation, and the experimental results, and compare the proposed method with two commercial displacement sensors. The commercial sensors used are a heterodyne interferometer, the interpolation error of which is also measured, and a capacitive sensor.

  • Purpose: Peri-implantitis (PI) is an inflammatory condition associated with the destruction of bone tissue around a dental implant, and diode lasers can be used to treat this disease. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a 940-nm diode laser for the nonsurgical treatment of PI. Methods: Twenty patients (8 women and 12 men) were enrolled in a split-mouth randomized controlled study. In the control group (CG), mechanical debridement with titanium curettes accompanied by airflow was performed around the implants. The test group (TG) was treated similarly, but with the use of a diode laser. Clinical measurements (plaque index, gingival index [GI], probing pocket depth [PPD], bleeding on probing [BOP], clinical attachment level, and interleukin-1β [IL-1β] in the peri-implant crevicular fluid) were evaluated and recorded at baseline and 3 months. IL-1β levels were determined using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. Results: The symptoms were alleviated in both groups at 3 months as assessed through clinical measurements. GI, BOP, and PPD were significantly lower in the TG than in the CG (P<0.05). The IL-1β level increased post-treatment in both groups, but this increase was only statistically significant (P<0.05) in the CG. Conclusions: The diode laser enabled improvements in clinical parameters in the periimplant tissue. However, it did not reduce IL-1β levels after treatment. Further studies about the use of diode lasers in the treatment of PI will be necessary to evaluate the effects of diode lasers in PI treatment.

  • We developed a design code for a diode side-pumped Nd:YAG laser with a diffusive reflector to investigate the optimum design conditions resulting in homogeneous absorption distribution and efficient laser output power. By including the thermal tensing effect in the calculation of the laser output power, the calculated output powers were in fairly good agreement with the experimental results within the stable resonator condition. The calculation method can be used effectively for a diode side-pumped Nd:YAG laser in choosing the optimum design parameters and in predicting the laser output power.

  • First observation of uranium using a diode laser was published recently. The experiment was performed by the optogalvanic spectroscopy using diode lasers. A laser source causes the current change in a hollow cathode discharge lamp when metal atoms in plasma absorb the diode laser light. The optogalvanic signal is collected by detecting the current change. This work is the extended investigation of our previous research, the uranium detection using a diode laser. New electronic transitions of uranium and thorium in 775∼850 nm were investigated using diode lasers. In addition, the Rb(Ⅰ) optogalvanic spectra at 780.02 nm and 794.76 nm were studied. The Rb(Ⅰ) spectrum at 780.02 nm showed the isotopic features and hyperfine splittings. This work provides a key idea that the diode lasers are useful in the specrochemical analysis of the radioactive actinides that have a rich spectrum with transitions which can be easily reached with AlGaAs diode lasers. Also, this study shows that the diode lasers can be an important tool to find the spectroscopic parameters of actinides and rare earth elements which have not known.
