  • Objectives: Functional Cerebrospinal Therapy (FCST) is a rather new physiologic therapeutics. It has passed about two decades since its basic idea was founded. This study briefly reviewed its early history. Methods: The first FCST patient was a stroke patient in the year 1992. Basic ideas of FCST was devised one by one and later developed into a systematic clinical application. The first official lecture was held in the year 2004. Yinyang balance in the meridian-system-based network over the whole body was a mainstay idea. Results: As other stories on newly-developed therapeutics, there was an effort to make a breakthrough for difficult clinical problems, and followed by a creative initial idea along with incessant refinement in the early history of FCST. Conclusions: Patient-centered approaches was a mainspring in the development and refinement of FCST. History of FCST hereafter may well follow the trace.

  • Dystonia is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary and uncontrollable muscle tonus abnormalities. It is a huge burden not only to the patients and their families, but also to the field of medicine, in that there has hardly been any substantial change in the concept of and approach to this intractable disorder and therefore no breakthrough to its diagnosis, evaluation and treatment. As an effort to solve the current impasse, this review briefly summarizes the current concept, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and management, and then suggests a rather new therapeutic approach to this disorder, based on the concept of neurological balance and TMJ integrative approach. These new approaches will provide a platform for the clinicians and researchers to have a leap in the concept, diagnosis and therapeutics.

  • Objectives: "Exploring the origin of acupuncture medicine (針灸逢源)", a classical title of acupuncture medicine in the 19th century, has been reviewed with focus on its impact on the standardization of acupoint in the history of acupuncture medicine as an approach of yin-yang balancing medicine like the Temporomandibular joint Balancing Medicine. Methods: A narrative review of literature was performed with a focus on continuous development and revision of the knowledge system of acupuncture medicine in medical education and clinical application. Results: This title has provided a systematized knowledge on acupoint-acupuncutre including 361 acupoints, acupoint location, and acupoint-meridian association, which was adopted as a frame of core knowledge in modern acupuncture medicine. Critical review and rational reasoning on previously accepted but apparently incongruous strips of knowledge led to the accomplishment of this title. Conclusions: This title provided a revised and standard knowledge system in the field of medical education and clinical practice of acupuncture medicine, and also provided an exemplary model of unrelenting change and development of an approach based on the concept of yin-yang balance such as acupuncture medicine and the Temporomandibular joint Balancing Medicine.

  • Objectives: The quadrant theorem is a theorem proposed by C. M. Guzay in the field of functional, holistic dentistry. There are not much of scientific literature on the quadrant theorem. This study briefly reviewed basic concepts of quadrant theorem. Methods: A publication by Guzay and research articles were searched and reviewed. The quadrant theorem is depicted as a series of illustrations and accompanied explanations. Results: The primary concept of the quadrant theorem was presented in 1952. Based on geometric biophysics of the occlusion and related anatomical functions, physiological pivotal axis of the mandible is analyzed to occurs at the dens (the sub-atlas area). Composite muscular activity links the mandibular posture with C1-C2, which is then linked with the spinal posture. Twenty illustrations are progressively presented on the physiognomy, occlusion, and analysis of anatomical functions. The balanced distribution of the forces gives the durability of the functions in life. Conclusions: The quadrant theorem provides a functional linkage between the mandibular posture and the upper cervical vertebrae.

  • In order to propose a fundamental and appliable theories for balancing therapy of temporomandibular joint (TMBT), evolutionary proofs and up-down theories in evolutionary biology and Korean medicine were investigated. Balancing therapy of temporomandibular joint treats disorder and diseases of the whole body through straightening of the abnormal linking between temporomandibular joint and axis. Although the mechanism of this therapy contains many merits like multicellular integrity and coadjustment, ease of balance and alert forward mobility by the bipedal stepping and evolution to Homo sapiens, increasing disadvantages of balancing pressure of right and left in the lengthened perpendicular axis and the balancing load of temporomandibular joint and axis following the reactional change of dental occlusion are deeply related and considered in this therapy. As for up-down theory, crossing of heavenly qi and earth qi centering on cervical joint is presented as the first mechanism for TMBT, and the other ones like in-out and up-down qi activity of tripple energizer, up-down of essence-qi-spirit in the three backbone barrier and three cinnabar field, up-down of yin-yang-water-fire of viscera and bowels can be related too.
