  • Taraxacum coreanum Nakai (TM) has been investigated for its antidiabetic activity in streptozotocin induced diabetic animals, but few studies have been conducted to evaluate its efficacy for treatment of type II diabetic mice. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of the water extracts of TM for the treatment of type II diabetes. Twenty four mice(C57BLKS/J Iar $-+Lepr^{db}/+Lepr^{db}$) with type II diabetes were randomly assigned either to a experimental group A (leaves extraction of TM), experimental group B(roots extraction of TM), experimental group C(leaves, roots and flowers extraction of TM) or control group. Water extracts of TM were ingested for 10 weeks. The changes of body weight, level of blood glucose, numerical change of insulin-immunoreactive cells and level of blood insulin were measured after treatment of water extracts of TM. A reduction of the blood glucose level after treatment of TM was observed in all the experimental groups. Especially, experimental C group showed significant reduction of blood glucose level compared with control group. Experimental C group induced an increase the level of blood insulin and density of insulin immunoreactive cells after treatment of TM. These results show that water extracts of TM can improve the severity in type II diabetic mice.

  • The present study investigated the effects of Lysophospholipid (LPLs, LIPIDOL$^{TM}$) on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of Hanwoo heifers. A feeding trial was performed for 120 days until slaughter using a herd of 24 Hanwoo heifers. Eight heifers were assigned to each of 3 experimental groups (control, 0.3% LIPIDOL$^{TM}$ and 0.5% LIPIDOL$^{TM}$). Growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and carcass characteristics were investigated. Significantly improved nutrient digestibility was found in the LIPIDOL$^{TM}$ treatment group compared to the control (p<0.05). No significant effect by LIPIDOL$^{TM}$ supplementation on growth performance was observed (p>0.05). However, interestingly, greater carcass weight was detected in the treatment of LIPIDOL$^{TM}$ where less daily gain was found. Although not a significant effect, greatly decreased back-fat thickness and increased loin area were detected in the treatment of LIPIDOL$^{TM}$. In meat characteristics, LIPIDOL$^{TM}$ increased intramuscular fat and tenderness. Therefore, the present study results suggest that the inclusion of LIPIDOL$^{TM}$ in the diet of Hanwoo heifers can improve carcass performance and meat quality by increasing the carcass index and the meat quality index. The results also suggest that a level of 0.3% might be more efficient than 0.5% with regard to economic effectiveness.

  • TM mode coupling coefficients for a generic five-layer DFB structure with trapezoidal and triangular gratings are calculated using the extended additional layer method. To determine the unperturbed field distributions of TM modes, a grating region is replaced by a new uniform layer whose inverse dielectric constant is the average value of the inverse dielectric constant of grating region in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Based on the self-consistent check, the validity of this method is established by comparing the results calculated by partitioning the grating region up to six uniform layers.

  • The experiment was conducted to determine the effects of Plant growth and the microbial distribution in soils treated with microbial products, Mity-GroTM. The results from this experiment were as follows ; 1. Plant height of Tomato and Pepper were significantly increased at 30 days after planted in soils treated with Mity-GroTM. Therefore, treatment of microbial products, Mity-GroTM, was considered to contribute the plant growth at early stage. 2. Microbial distribution in soils treated with Mity-GroTM was significantly changed at specific mcirobial population. However, The ratio of bacteria/actinomycetes in the plot treated with Mity-GroTM was significantly enhanced.

  • TM polarized photon tunneling time and the position where TM photons appear after two-dimensional tunneling in a frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) structure are calculated. This is done by converting the FTIR tunneling problem of TM photons to an electron tunneling problem with a position-dependent effective mass for a heterostructure potential barrier. Derived results are compared with TE photon cases.

  • Thulium (Tm) has been incorporated into $YAlO_3$ and $YTa_7O_{19}$ host materials to obtain blue phosphors. $Tm^{3+}$-doped $YAlO_3$ and $YTa_7O_{19}$ phosphors were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method. According to the results of excitation and emission spectra measured at room temperature, the blue emission intensity of $Tm^{3+}$-doped $YTa_7O_{19}$, peaking at 455 nm was much higher than that of $Tm^{3+}-doped\; YAlO_34, peaking at 458 nm. The maximum of relative intensity of $Tm^{3+}-doped\; YAlO_3\; and\; YTa_7O_{19}$ was obtained at the doping concentration of 0.016 and 0.120 mol% $Tm^{3+}$, respectively. These emission spectra revealed the concentration quenching effect.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of $HTR^{TM}$ (hard tissue replacement, Bioplant Inc, U.S.A) polymer on short-term healing as a grafting material for alveolar ridge augmentation. A 48-year-old female presented insufficient bone height and width for the placement of implants. $HTR^{TM}$ polymer was used for ridge augmentation. Bone biopsy was harvested 8 months after the ridge augmentation procedure. $HTR^{TM}$ polymer displayed rapid bone regeneration and mature lamellar and trabecular bone redevelopment. Clinical and histologic observation from the treatment of the patient presented suggest that $HTR^{TM}$ polymer seems to be a appropriate material for alveolar ridge augmentation.

  • This paper deals with the basic design of the traction motor(TM) by performing the train performance simulation(TPS). The TPS, considering min condition, provides some important information about selecting the latins of TM such as current, power and frequency, etc. Especially, calculating the current flowing into the TM by the TPS in the situation of normal condition and M-car cut out respectively, we can inspect whether the TM endures thermally under the contingency or not. This paper reviews the tractive effort of the train to meet the demands of consumer and then designs the TM electrically. finally, performing the TPS under emergency condition, it checks the thermal capacity of the TM to insure the justice of the TM under construction.

  • A gene encoding thermostable pectinase (TmPec) was isolated from hyperthermophilic microorganism, Thermotoga maritima. The open reading frame (ORF) of TmPec gene is 1,104 bp long and encodes 367 amino acid residues with a molecular weight of 40,605 Da. To analyze the enzymatic activity and biochemical properties, the ORF of TmPec gene excluding putative signal sequence of 27 amino acids was introduced into the E. coli expression vector, pRSET-B, and overexpressed in E. coli BL21. Protein concentration of purified recombinant TmPec was 1.1 mg/mL with specific activity of 56 U/mg protein on pectin. The recombinant TmPec showed the highest activity at around $85-95^{\circ}C$, and at around pH 6.5. It was stable at temperature below $85^{\circ}C$. In the presence of $Ca^{2+}$, the activity of recombinant TmPec was increased to 146.3% of normal level. In contrast, $Ba^{2+}$ and Mn2+ showed strong inhibition to the recombinant TmPec.
