  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the historical background of the setting of seungdang(僧堂) and gowon (庫院) in the Zen Buddhist temples of Song dynasty, in terms of as a Buddhist temple universality and as a Zen temple specificity, through the historical reference investigation on its relevance to the Buddhist temples of Tang dynasty. In the Zen Buddhist temples of Song dynasty, the Zen meditation space of seungdang was located on the west side of Buddha hall, and the kitchen and officiating priest's living space of gowon was located on the east side of Buddha hall. Through the analysis of historical reference it was confirmed that, in the Buddhist temples of Tang dynasty, the Zen meditation section of seonwon(禪院) was on the west side, and the gowon was on the east side too. Therefore, it can be said that, the setting method of seungdang and gowon of the Zen Buddhist temples of Song dynasty was established above tradition of the Tang dynasty Buddhist temples.

  • Tree species of wooden structural members of the Beomeo Temple were identified based on light and scanning electron microscopic characters in the present study. Of 10 structural members, 9 softwoods and 1 hardwood were identified. Among softwood members, 7 belonged to hard pine of the Sylvestris section, and the remaining 2 to hard pine of other than the Sylvestris section and hemlock of the genus Tsuga, respectively. A single hardwood member was identified as white oak of the Prinus section under the subgenus Lepidobalanus.

  • The recent listing of Preah Vihear Temple as a World Heritage Site has awakened a longtime simmering border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over a few square kilometers surrounding the ancient Khmer Temple. While the listing of the site by UNESCO was expected to revive the economy of the impoverished border towns near the temple due to the increased tourism and funding for the preservation of the archeological site, it has had the opposite effect due to the sharp increase in violent conflict carried out by the armed forces and nationalist activists from both sides. Military skirmishes and violent protests have brought the local economy to a halt in addition to causing considerable physical damage to the local infrastructure and to the local transnational network of ethnic Kui, local business owners, Khmer and Thai villagers. This paper shows how the dispute is viewed and undertaken by three distinct communities involved in the conflict, the militaries, the metropolitan political elites and activists, and the local villagers. The three communities represent three different cultures of conflict with different interests and most importantly with differential access to the media and official representations of the dispute.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the overall condition of the foundation for the three storied stone pagoda of Bulguksa temple in GyeongJu. As a research method, exploration of the electrical resistivity, refraction seismic, surface wave exploration, GPR exploration, Reputation loading test. The results of the investigation, the range of the foundation was formed in foundation stone outskirts of 1.5 ~ 2.0m. It was confirmed to be about 2.0m depth. The depth of the foundation becomes shallower from the base portion to the outside. And the bearing capacity of foundation was sufficient conditions to weight. It can sufficiently support the weight of pagoda. And, the result of this investigation becomes basis data for repair work.

  • The stone pagoda of Mireuk temple site is currently restoring through the repairing process. This stone pagoda has the various construction types in the inner and outer space. Therefore, the stress concentration and structural behavior need to be considered through the analysis of various construction patterns. To this end, this study presents the structural modelling and analysis considering the discrete element analysis technique to solve the discontinuum behavior between the stone elements. Also, this study performs the structural performance evaluation through the various design variables for the safety of stone pagoda. Through the analysis results, we can find out the small stress concentration in the several members. But, because the stresses and displacements are relatively small, we can secure the safety of the whole structure.

  • As we approach the completion of the first 25 years of the human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) epidemic, there have been dramatic improvements in the care of patients with HIV infection. These have prolonged life and decreased morbidity. There are twenty currently available antiretrovirals approved in the United States for the treatment of this infection. The medications, including their pharmacokinetic properties, side effects, and dosing are reviewed. In addition, the current approach to the use of these medicines is discussed. We have included a section addressing common comorbid conditions including hepatitis B and C along with tuberculosis.

  • Tongdo temple is one of the representative temples that the Buddhistic outlook on the universe and the world is well expressed. This article will discuss the expressive and symbolic meaning that Darma talk on vulture peak signifies by contemplating the road leading from Ilju gate to Buddha's hall in terms of Karam arrangement of the temple and the unique plane delineation of Bulee gate. It seems that Darma talk on vulture peak is related to the reason why there is no Buddha statue in Buddha's hall and why the name of the mountain has been changed considering the resemblance of its shape to India's Youngchook mountain. The present study will take this relation into account and will show the religious faith and architectural meaning with respect to this relationship.

  • This paper demonstrates how a nineteenth century Japanese votive temple problem known as sangaku from Okayama prefecture can be solved using traditional mathematical methods of the Japanese Edo (1603-1868 CE). We compare a modern solution to a sangaku problem from Sacred Geometry: Japanese Temple Problems of Tony Rothman and Hidetoshi Fukagawa with a traditional solution of ${\bar{O}}hara$ Toshiaki (?-1828). Our investigation into the solution of ${\bar{O}}hara$ provides an example of traditional Edo period mathematics using the tenzan jutsu symbolic manipulation method, as well as producing new insights regarding the contextual nature of the rules of this technique.

  • In the present study, ventilation flow in the Janggyeongpan-Jeon at Haein temple in case of building rearrangement has been investigated numerically. To achieve more accurate results, detailed shapes such as buildings and the window grills are modeled and tree canopy model is adopted to account for the effect of trees in the computation. Wind velocities as boundary condition are taken from meteorological statistical data. The numerical results show that ventilation flow distributions at Janggyeongpan-Jeon in case of building rearrangement are nearly similar to those before rearrangement.

  • To gain insight into possible cellular protective mechanisms against the insult of formaldehyde, we have investigated this molecule's reactivity with both naturally occurring thiol compounds including glutathione and L-ascorbic acid. By UV measurements, for maldehyde was found to rapidly react with glutathione forming an S-hydroxymethyl covalent adduct. The adduct which was confirmed by NMR is transiently stable. Formaldehydissimilar to its reaction with dimedone. The reaction of formaldehyde with glutathione was reduced by 40% in the presence of an excess amount of L-ascorbic acid, due to the trapping of formaldehyde by L-ascorbic acid. The data suggest that L-ascorbic acid may have a possible in vivo role in the metabolism of formaldehyde, thereby protecting cellular glutathione from possible depletion.
