  • Time Domain Refletometry, or TDR, is a remote sensing electrical measurement technique that has been used for many years to determine the spatial location and nature of various objects, especially in the United States of America and Australia at mining industry. Since early on 1990, the TDR techniques have been applied to the geotechnical engineering such as : deformation measurement of rock slope and landslide, monitoring of ground water content and ground water level change, investigation of ground contamination and its movement. The first application of this technique, in 1996, to the domestic area is to determine the possibility of ground settlement caused by subsidence from abandoned underground mines at the Tongri and Gosari in Gangwon-d. In this paper, through the results of analysed deformation data between conventional measurements and the TDR, it was concluded that the TDR technique is a useful instrumentation method for the prediction of ground deformation.

  • GIS technique enhanced a space data manipulation ability and we are offering a geographic information service through various analysis. The quantity used of the water was increased in such situation according to a population increase and a city concentration phenomenon. But, to secure clear water are difficult, owing to the water shortage phenomenon, seepage and the quality of water change for worse. We decide the seepage and the system to retrieve the seepage location using GIS in order to reduce vast loss from the seepage. In this paper we proposed Leakage Sensing System using TDR technology in GIS, constructed a GIS database and pilot system to prove the validity, and simulated it using TDR in GIS.

  • This study evaluated a method for prompt and periodic monitoring of moisture content in the waste layer of a landfill using a Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) sensor, aimed at ensuring the stable operation of the bioreactor facility at the 2nd landfill of the SUDOKWON Landfill Site. It was found that the TDR sensor is sensitive to variables such as temperature changes and ion content in both the waste layer and leachate, indicating that a correction equation is necessary. A correction equation derived through regression analysis demonstrated a high correlation (correlation coefficient = 0.9647), and field verification experiments confirmed its reliability with an average deviation of only 1.5%. This verifies that the TDR sensor is effective for measuring and monitoring moisture content in landfills. It is also anticipated to be useful for various applications, including monitoring leachate levels, detecting leachate leakage, and assessing rainwater infiltration.

  • Recently, measurement of soil moisture contents using TDR (time domain reflectometry) has been proven to be viable technique. The first empirical model proposed by Topp et al. (1980) has been widely used to determine moisture contents of soils from the TDR-measured dielectric constants. However, applicability of the model was limited to medium-textured soils. In this study, we investigate the applicability of the model to sandy-gravelly soils. Calibration experiments consisted of measurement on travel time of electromagnetic waveform along the parallel TDR rods inserted into samples and gravimetric determination of soil moisture contents. The experiments are performed for two sets of samples different in the length and each set consisted of seven different particle size distributions with various gavel contents. The calibration results show that the Topp equation overestimated the measured moisture content for a given dielectric constant by 3 to 8%. We therefore propose new empirical relationships valid for sandy-gravelly soils.

  • Time domain reflectometry (TDR) is widely used for wire failure detection. It transmits a pulse that is reflected at the boundaries of different characteristic impedances. By analyzing the reflected signal, TDR makes it possible to locate the failure. In this study, TDR was used to detect the water leakage at a pipe joint. A wire attached to the pipe surface was soaked by water when a leak occurred, which affected the characteristic impedance of the wet part, resulting in a change in the reflected signal. To infer the leakage from the TDR signal, we first developed a finite difference time domain-based forward model that provided the output of the TDR signal given the configuration of the transmission line. Then, by solving the inverse problem, the locations of the leaks were found.

  • Two types of deformations can occur on the cable during the monitoring of the rock displacement by the time domain reflectometry. One is the impedance model for tensile deformation, and the other is the capacitance model for the shear deformation. The former gives a response signal with a gradual change in the amplitude of the reflected voltage, meanwhile the latter produces a signal with a blunted spike. The resolution of the TDR can be improved to 0.125% using calibration crimps on the cable of 60 meters long. It is recommended that the diameter of the cable should be 18 mm at least in order to induce a better reflected pulse without any open-circuit. The actual TDR technique cannot characterize the type and the magnitude of rock displacement quantitatively. Systematic investigation of the TDR parameters, such as the exact of cable diameter, cable length, number of crimps, combination of shearing and extension, and environment of the TDR equipment, will be able to improve the resolution to 0.01 mm.

  • The infrastructure of flexible pavement is composed of aggregate subbase, anti-frost layer, and subgrade. In particular, the subgrade performance is affected by climates such as frost action and precipitation. The method of TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) sensors to measure moisture contents in subgrade layer has been used in the research. Due to the TDR method using dielectric permitivity of soil and water, the sensors can be affected by the low subgrade temperatures. The air temperatures frequently drops below $-20^{\circ}C$ in the winter in Korea. As a result, it is necessary to estimate the accuracy of the TDR moisture sensors in the range of below zero temperatures. In this study, the subgrade temperatures of lower than $-2^{\circ}C$ were extended to evaluate temperature sensitivity of the TDR moisture sensors. The test results revealed that the moisture contents around the sensors were reduced while those of the upper part of specimen showed a tendency to increase as the specimen surface temperature drops below zero under the volumetric moisture contents(VMC) of 20% and 30%. However, the impact of temperature on the function of the sensor at lower water contents was found to be negligible if any.
