  • TCP typically offers reasonable end-to-end performance to users regardless of the bandwidth and error characteristics of particular network technology, The robustness of TCP has contributed to its success in the internet environment. The role of communications is already well established in the office environment. With the advent of cheap, affordable broadband communications and the increasing complexity of consumer goods, it seems natural to extend the network into homes. In-home networking means a high-speed communication among the digital appliances within a home. Introduction of application over high-speed home network using TCP/IP protocol is increasing. The integrated environment of internet and home network is demanding as well. We have validated TCP model over high speed home network environment, investigated the throughput behavior of TCP over IEEE 1399 home networks, and evaluated a potential solution for high performance of TCP over IEEE 139t home networks. The simulation model has produced several interesting results in the performance of TCP over IEEE 1394 home network.

  • In OBS networks, the burst dropping due to contention significantly affects the performance of TCP, but existing drop policies have not considered this problem and researches related to TCP have been mainly studied on burst assembling. We propose the drop policy considering retransmission of TCP to improve the performance of TCP in OBS networks. The proposed drop policy is the Retransmission Count-based DP that regards retransmission count of bursts as priority when it selects dropping burst. This paper evaluates the performance of RC-based DP model and general DP model using ns-2. The metrics of performance evaluation are TCP throughput, maximum sequence number of received TCP packets and drop rate of packet as simulation time increases.

  • Wireless mesh network is flexible network like Ad hoc network or bluetooth together based on base station. But, wireless mesh network shows high packet loss and when TCP was created, however as it was design based on wired link, wireless link made more transmission error than wired link. It is existent problem of TCP congestion control algorithm that TCP unfairness and congestion collapse over wireless mesh network. When TCP operation occurs with the packet loss where is not the congestion loss, it brings the performance degradation which is serious. In this paper, in order to improve efficient TCP congestion control algorithm in wireless mesh network, we proposed that TCP can adaptively regulate the congestion window in wireless link.

  • In this paper, in order to improve the performance of TCP short traffic services in wireless Internet environments, the Split-ACKs(SPACK) scheme is proposed. In wireless networks, unlike wired networks, packet losses will occur more often due to high bit error rates. Therefore, each packet loss over wireless links results in congestion control procedure of TCP being invoked at the source. This causes severe end-to-end performance degradation of TCP. In this paper, to alleviate the TCP performance, the SPACK method, split acknowledgement packets in the base station, is proposed. Using computer simulation, the performance of TCP using SPACK is analyzed and shows better performance than traditional TCP protocol.

  • Even though a lot of researches to improve the performance of TCP over wireless networks have been performed, the performance of TCP cannot satisfy users under high packet loss rate of wireless networks. This paper addresses the problem of TCP Westwood under high packet loss rate and reveals the reasons through the extensive simulation analysis. The ABE(Available Bandwidth Estimation) of TCP westwood becomes incorrect due to TCP dynamics of loss recovery. Based on this observation, we propose two algorithms for enhancing the correctness of ABE. We have evaluated the effects of the proposed algorithms through simulation. The proposed algorithms have achieved more correct ABE under the packet loss rate less than 1%.

  • Several analytic models describe transmission control protocol (TCP) performance such as steady-state throughput as an averaged ratio of number of transmissions to latency. For more detailed analysis of TCP latency, the latency during packet losses are recovered should be considered. In this paper, we derive the expected duration of loss recovery latency considering the number of packet losses recovered by retransmissions. Based on the numerical results verified by simulations, TCP using selective acknowledgement (SACK) option is more effective than TCP NewReno from the aspect of loss recovery latency.

  • The security protocols such as SSH and SSL/TLS operate over TCP and encrypt all data from the application layer. However, this method has unnecessary performance degradation because it encrypts even data which does not require confidentiality. In this paper, we propose TCP OENC(TCP Optional Encryption) which optionally encrypts only confidential data by the application user. The proposed TCP OENC is in accordance with TCP standard operation, and it operates if application user demand on encrypting data. Before the TCP OENC sends first encrypted data, performs the key agreement, and then encrypts and sends data which application user is desired by using shared key obtained from the key agreement.

  • With the development of ubiquitous sensor networks, the need for communication among mobile nodes has been increased. When the existing TCP is applied to MANET, link failure, route change and network partition make TCP recognize congestion. As a result, TCP shows a poor performance. In this paper, using cross-layer design a new TCP congestion control algorithm that is suitable for MANET is designed and analyzed with ns2.
