  • Extreme waves are generated in a model basin based on directional wave focusing. The targeted wave field is described by double summation method and it is applied to serpent-type wavemaker system. The extreme crest amplitude at a designed location is obtained by syncronizing the phases and focusing the directions of wave components. Two distinguished spectrums of constant wave amplitude and constant wave steepness are adapted to describe the frequency distribution of component waves. The surface profile of generated wave packets is measured by wave guage array and the effects of dominant spectral parameters governing extreme wave characteristics are investigated. It is found that frequency bandwidth, center frequency, shape of frequency spectrum and directional range play a significant role in the wave focusing. In particular, the directional effect significantly enhances the wave focusing efficiency.

  • This study investigated if a requirement for screen gloss is needed in the TCO Requirements and was, therefore, targeted towards finding an acceptable reflex level. The results show that a glossy surface has an impact on the visual ergonomics, and for this reason we believe that a requirement is needed. Although, the results do not point to a single value that is better than another, so a selection for a requirement level has to be augmented with additional information. Such a discussion is given and 60 gloss units at 60 degrees ($GU_{60}$) was selected as the new requirement level for the TCO Requirements (TCO '03 and TCO '05).

  • The TFT-LCD industry has shown dramatic growth by making technological advances and satisfying consumer needs. It now stands at the heart of the display industry. However, the TFT-LCD market is maturing and is unlikely to sustain the fast pace of growth in years to come. There has been an oversupply in the LCD sector entering 2008 due to capacity expansion aimed at fueling growth coupled with softening demand amid the global economic slowdown and recent financial turmoil. The LCD industry has successfully coped with oversupply on several occasions. Each time, LCD makers faced up to the challenge and responded with a pioneering spirit. They continued to grow by turning crisis into opportunity. LG Display aims to create new markets by developing products based on innovative technology and providing more attractive products through a value-added product planning that incorporates consumer needs. Through a continuous cost innovation targeted at stimulating demand by making products more economical to consumers, we will be at the forefront of overcoming the current oversupply and sustaining robust growth for the TFT-LCD industry. Depending on our management of the situation, the current oversupply could prove to be an opportunity to create even bigger markets for the future.

  • In this paper, we introduce an ADSRC(hdvanced DSRC) OFDM packet communication system which has been developed by ETRI. The ADSRC system is targeted to provide high terminal mobility, high data rate and seamless service in roadside environment for mobile office services. We discuss the requirements of the ADSRC communication system for mobile office services, and the system design specification to meet them with regard to air interface. The ADSRC packet communication systems consist of the MAC processor block, the OFDM packet modem block and the RF block. The MAC processor block handles medium access control and the test. The OFDM packet modem transmits data packets at up to 24Mbps adaptively and recovers the data from RF block. We describe the ADSRC packet communication system architecture and the ADSRC system protocol.

  • This paper describes the fixed-point DSP implementation of a CELP(Code-excited linear prediction)-based speech coder. The effective realization methodologies to maximize the utilization of the DSP's architectural features, specifically parallel movement and pipelining are also presented together with the implementation results targeted for the ITU-T standard G.723.1 using Motorola DSP56362. The operation of the implemented speech coder is verified using the test vectors offered by the standard as well as using the peripheral interface circuits designed for the coder's real-time operation.

  • Factors considered by mothers when choosing a kindergarten for their child were analyzed by mother's age, education level, and employment status. Questionnaires (Seo, 2002; Kim, 2001; Park, 1997) targeted 636 mothers of kindergarteners from 12 different kindergartens. Results were (1) in order of importance mothers considered : physical environment, tuition, humane environment, educational curriculum and program, and time spent for education. (2) Younger mothers considered the program of the kindergarten of more importance whereas older mothers considered the commuting method, size of kindergarten, and personality and competence of the principal and teachers of more importance. (3) College educated mothers considered curriculum and field trips to be important factors. (4) Employed mothers considered the importance of all day programs and hours of operation.

  • Pharmacogenomics is the study that examines how genetic variations affect the ways in which people respond to drugs. The ways people respond to drugs are complex traits that are influenced by many different genes. Pharmacogenomics intends to develop rational means of optimizing drug therapy, with respect to the patients' genotype, to maximize efficacy with minimal adverse drug reactions. Pharmacogenomics has the potential to revolutionize the practice of medicine, and promises to usher in an area of personalized medicine, in which drugs and drug combinations are optimized for each individual's unique genetic makeup. Indeed, pharmacogenomics is exploited as an essential step for target discovery and drug development in the pharmaceutical industry. The goal of the personalized medicine is to get the right dose of the right drug to the right patient at the right time. In this article, we will review the use of pharmacogenomics in drug discovery and development.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the determinants of financial behaviors and subjective economic well-being in personal financial education through research targeted at adults. The results indicated by the research can be summarized as follows. First, there was a significant difference found in the changes of financial behaviors in accordance with the types of financial education programs, the time period, and the methods of financial education. Second, financial behaviors were higher when participating in profit financial education programs or in workplace financial education programs. Additionally, the increase was higher when participating in long-term programs. Third, the positive effects on subjective economic well-being were financial behaviors, participation in profitable financial education programs, unmarried and income level.

  • We implemented a cryptoprocessor with a on-the-fly key scheduler which performs forward key scheduling for encryption and reverse key scheduling for decryption. This scheduler makes the fast generation of the key value and eliminates the memory for software key scheduler. The 128-bit Rijndael processor is implemented based on the proposed architecture using Verilog-HDL and targeted to Xilinx XCV1000E FPGA device. As a result, the 128-bit Rijndael operates at 38.8MHz with on-the-fly key scheduler and consumes 11 cycles for encryption and decryption resulting in a throughput of 451.5Mbps

  • In this paper, we propose an area-efficient architecture of a reed-solomon (RS) decoder/encoder for digital VCRs. The new architecture of the decoder/encoder targeted to reduce the circit size and decoding latency has the following two features. First, area-efficeincy has been significantly improved by sharing a functional block for encoding, modified syndrome computation, and erasure locator polynomial evaluation. Second, modified euclid's algorithms has been implemented by using a new architecture. Experimental results have showed that the decoder/encoder designed by using the proposed method has been implemented with 25% smaller sie over straight forware implementation based on the conventional method [1] and the decoding latency has been reduced.
