  • The most important aspect determining the completeness of aprosthesis is itsmarginal and internal fit. Alloysare processed using a softening/hardening heat treatment methodin order to improve their mechanical, physical properties and polishing properties. To examinehow the heat treatment method affects the marginal and internal fit of the Ni-Cr alloy core, thirty dental stone models of the abutment of the mandibular left molar were manufactured. The Ni-Cr alloy coreswere manufactured by the dipping method for the experiment and dividedinto three groups; A for no heat treatment, B for softening heat treatment and C for hardening heat treatment. The marginal and internal fitsof all of the groups were measured by the silicone replica technique. A statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA(${\alpha}=0.05$) in order to examine whether there is a significant difference in the average values of the marginal and internal fits among the three groups and it was found that themarginal fits (1, 6) were significantly different (p<0.05), but the internal fits (2, 3, 4, 5) were not significantly different (p>0.05). These results show that Ni-Cr alloys should not be processed bythe heat treatmentmethod. However, they need to be confirmed in further clinical application studies.

  • SCM 415 has been vacuum carburized in the carburizing pressure of 60-65kpa and the carburizing temperature of 1233k and 1273k after varied to 0-20 in the ratio of $N_2/C_3H_8$ and then diffusion treated for various times at 1123k. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows. 1. With increasing from 0 to 20 in ratio of $N_2/C_3H_8$ the sooting formation of surface after carburizing considerably decreased. 2. The hardness control and surface carbon content of carburizing surface has been modified by the addition of nitrogen to the propan. 3. The appoximate value of k is indirectry calculated at 1123k which results are obtained to $0.58{\times}10^{-2}(wt.%.S^{-1/2})$. 4. A great deal of propan by addition of nitrogen gas in carburizing gas was possible to saving without considerable change in case hardening depth. 5. The effective carburizing depth range is obtained to 0.8-1.1mm by diffusion temperature of 1123k after carburization at 1273k-3.6ks, and the surface hardness is increased as the increasing of $T_D/T_c$ in our experimental condition, and the maximum hardness as reachin distance from surface is decreased.

  • The effects of Sr and (Ti-B) additives on the tensile properties of AC4A recycled (35% scrap content) aluminum alloys were investigated. An acicular morphology of the eutectic Si phase of as-cast specimens was converted to a fibrous morphology upon the addition of Sr. Moreover, morphology of the Sr modified eutectic Si phase became finer due to a T6 heat treatment. The grain size of the ${\alpha}$-solid solution was decreased by the addition of (Ti-B) additives. Depending on the treatment conditions of the as-cast specimens, i.e., no addition, a Sr addition and a (Ti-B)+Sr addition, the tensile strength levels of the as-cast specimens were 182, 192, and 204MPa, respectively. The corresponding strengths of T6 heat-treated specimens were 293, 308, and 318MPa. Elongations of the as-cast specimens were 2.2, 3.1, and 5.6%, and the corresponding elongations of the T6 heat-treated specimens were 4.6, 6.1, and 7.6%. The percentage of the reduced section area in the tensile specimens was also increased by the Sr and (Ti-B) additives. Sr and (Ti-B) additives changed the microstructure and the distribution of defects in the castings, resulting in an improvement of the tensile properties of AC4A aluminum alloys. According to our test results, recycled (35% scrap content) AC4A aluminum alloy met all of the KS requirements of the tensile strength and elongation values of AC4A aluminum alloy except for the elongation value of the one specimen condition, in this case the as-cast no-addition condition.

  • As a case hardening process for stainless steels, nitriding is more preferred and widely used than carburizing which deterioates corrosion resistance severely. In order to add the nitrogen into the stainless steels, passive film on the surface must be removed effectively before nitriding. Conventional gas nitriding process is performed in the temperature range of 500 to $600^{\circ}C$ with $NH_3$ gas, which often leads to sensitization of stainless steels. In this study, we tried to activate passive film of austenitic stainless steels by heating at low pressure. ($900^{\circ}C$, $5{\times}10^{-2}$ Torr.) Nitriding was performed at the solution treatment temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ with nitrogen molecules instead of $NH_3$ gas. An attainable nitrogen content in a case depends on the nitrogen gas pressure at constant nitriding temperature. A case depth is proportional to the square root of solution time, which suggests that inward diffusion of nitrogen follows the Fick's 2nd law. Surface nitrogen atoms are dissolved as interstitial solutes, or precipitated in the form of MN, $M_2N$ nitrides, which increase the case hardeness. Dissolved nitrogen in the case enhances the cavitation resistance of austenitic stainless steels dramatically.

  • Aluminum plates of the same materials as the foam were attached by the casting process inserting the foam as a core to investigate the tensile property of open cell foams. Tensile properties of the open cell 6063 aluminum alloy foam of $10{\sim}30$ PPI were measured before and after heat treatment. Densities of test specimens were between 0.14 and $0.29g/cm^3$. Tensile strength of the 6063 aluminum foam after heat treatment showed little change. C values were in the range of $0.41{\sim}0.87$ for as cast foams and $0.11{\sim}0.27$ for T6 heat treated foams in the eq. of ${\sigma}^* _{pl}/{\sigma}_{ys}=C({\rho}/{\rho}_s)^{1.5}$, and increased with increase in the cell size.

  • Compressive properties of the open cell 6063 aluminum alloy foams made by the plaster molding process were investigated before and after heat treatment. Loading process was controlled at a displacement rate of 2 mm/min. Compressive strength of 10 PPI foam was the largest of the same density foams. Increase in strength after heat treatment for the bulk material was remark able, however was not for the 6063 aluminum foam. C values were in the range of $0.39{\sim}0.53$ for as cast foams and $0.13{\sim}0.16$ for T6 heat treated foams in the equation of ${sigma}^*_{pl}/{\sigma}_{ys}=C({\rho}/{\rho}_{s})^{1.5}$ and increased with cell size.

  • This study is aimed to investigate the effect of various thermomechanical treatments($T_6$, $T_8$ and ITMT) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg-Zr alloy (Weldalite 049) which has been known to strong natural aging response, good weldablity and high strength in $T_6$ sand $T_8$ temper. This experiment was performed by means of differential scaning calorimetry, tensile test, optical and transmission electron microscopy. The tensile strength in the peak aged condition shows 620, 650 MPa in $T_6$ and $T_8$(40% cold work), respectively. Also, The tensile strength is increased with cold working in $T_8$ but decreased at 60% cold working. However, the tensile strength of the intermediate thermomechanical treated speciman(ITMT) is lower than that of $T_6$ temper about 20% but the elongation is higher than two times. It might be predicted that the ITMT is effective processing to improve the toughness of this alloy. In $T_6$, $T_8$ and ITMT, the major strengthening phase is $T_1(Al_2CuLi)$ phases. and the fine $T_1$ phase which are homogeneously precipited in matrix was observed much more in $T_8$ than $T_6$ and ITMT.

  • This is an experimental study on friction welding and heat treatment of engine exhaust valve materials whose welding combination is SCr4 as stem to 21-4N as head and SUH3 to 21-4N. In this study, not only the experiments of friction welding under the selected optimum welding condition and the examination of the mechanical properties were carried out, but also the heat treatment of friction welded specimens under the two selected conditions was taken to obtain the better welding character, eliminating the latent stress and the hardness peak which appeared at the welded zones of heat resisting steel(21-4N, SUH3) and low alloyed steel ($SCr_4$) friction weldments. The results obtained by the experiments and consideration in this study are as follows: I) It was experimentally proved quite reasonable that 'speed=3,OOO rpm, heating pressure Pl=8 kg/ mm2, upsetting pressure p, = 20 kg/mm', heating time $t_1$ = 3 see, upsetting time TEX>$t_2$ = 2.5 sec' was selected as the optimum welding condition for friction-welding the engine exhaust valve materials $SCr_4$ to 21-4 Nand SUH 3 to 21-4 N. 2) The results of the previous study and this one on friction welding of such dissimilar materials as SUH 3-SUH 31, SCr 4-SUH 31, SCr 4-SUH 3, SUH 3-CRK 22, SCr4-21-4 Nand SUH3-21-4 N agreed with each other substantially in the friction welding characteristics at welded interface zones. 3) It was also certified quite satisfactory that '600\ulcornerCX30 min. Xroom air cooling' as an optimum heat treatment condition of the friction welded materials SCr 4-21-4 Nand SUH 3-21-4 N was experimentally determined to eliminate the latent stress and the hardness peak at welded zones. 4) About 20% of the tensile strength before heat treatment of friction welded specimens was decreased after heat treatment 600\ulcornerCX30 min. Xair cooling, but the location of fracture was moved from heat affected zone to parent $SCr_4$ & SUH3. 5) Microscopic examination of the weld joints friction-welded and heat-treated under the above mentioned conditions revealed that the weld zone is very narrow and has a fine grained intermixed structure without any welding defects. 6) The above mentioned conditions can be also utilized as friction welding parameters of the other dissimiar materials for engine valve production.

  • Ti-45.2at.%Ni-5at.%Cu and Ti-40.2at.%Ni-10atat.%Cu alloy powders were fabricated by gas atomization process. The microstructures, Shape, hardness and phase transformation behaviors of the powders were investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, micro-hardness measurement, x-ray diffraction analyses and differential scanning calorimetry. The hardness of the Ti-Ni-XCu alloy powders decreased as Cu-content increased. The x-ray diffraction analyses were carried out for powders without heat treatment, and those that treated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ for an hour in a vaccum state($10^5$ torr) and then quenched into ice water. The intensity of B$19^t$ phase increased with heat treating. The monoclinic B$19^t$ martensite was formed in the Ti-Ni-XCu alloy powders during cooling.

  • In this study, the characteristics of aluminum tube hydroformed products at different extrusion type and heat treatment conditions were investigated. For the investigation, as-extruded, full annealed and T6-treated Al 6061 tubes at different extrusion type were prepared. To evaluate the hydroformability, free bulge test was performed at room temperature to $300^{\circ}C$. Also mechanical properties of hydroformed products at various pre- and post-heat treatments were estimated by hexagonal prototype hydroforming test at $250^{\circ}C$. And the tensile test specimens were obtained from hexagonal prototype hydroformed tube. As a results, hydroformability of full annealed tube is $5{\sim}8%$ higher than that of extruded and T6-treated tube. The tensile strength and elongation of T6-post heat treated indirect extrusion tube were more than 330MPa and 12%, respectively. However, T6 pre treated hydroformed product represents high strength, 330MPa and low elongation, 8%. Therefore, Hydroformability of Al6061 tube showed similar value for both extrusion types. However flow stress of direct tube showed $20{\sim}50MPa$ lower value than indirect tube.
