This paper showed mechanical properties and behaviors of macrostructures for specimens welded by F.S.W according to welding conditions and tool with 6.35$mm_t$ aluminum 7075-T651alloy plate. It resulted in defect-free weld zone in case tool rotation speed was 800rpm, 1250rpm and 1600rpm respectively that transition speed was changed to 15mm/min, 61mm/min and 124mm/min with tool's pin diameter 4${\Phi}$mm and 6${\Phi}$mm. The optimum mechanical property, ultimate stress,${\sigma}_Y$=470Mpa was obtained at the condition of 124mm/min of travel speed with 800rpm of tool rotation speed using full screw type pin, shoulder dia. 20${\Phi}$mm, pin dia.6${\Phi}$mm and pin length 6mm. The full-screw type and the half-screw type pin showed the similar behaviors of weldability. It is found that the size of nugget was depended on tool transition speed and tool dimension by macrostructures of the cross section of weld zone.
The performance of air-to-air heat exchanger has been investigated with rotating porous plates newly developed in this study. With an equal interval of 18 mm, the rotating porous plates are installed inside the heat exchanger where the hot and cold airs enter at opposite ends. When flowing in opposite directions by the separating plate installed in the center of the rotating porous plates, the airs give and receive the heat each other. Dry bulb temperature is set by adjusting heat supply at heater. In order to measure the temperature distribution of the hot air side inside heat exchanger, the thermocouples are inserted between the plates. The first location of thermocouple is 10mm downstream from the inlet of heat exchanger, and succeeding ten locations are aligned at an equal interval of 18mm. From the experiment of air-to-air heat exchanger with the rotating porous plates, the heat transfer rate increased as both air flow rate and RPM of the rotating porous plate increased. It was found that the overall heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase in RPM of porous plate at the conditions of the same air flow rate.
In this paper an energy method is presented for the linear buckling analysis of first order shear deformable plates. The displacement fields are defined in terms of the shape functions, which correspond to a set of predefined points and are composed of significantly high order polynomials. The locations of these points are found by mapping the geometry using the naturalized coordinates and bilinear shape functions. In order to evaluate the method, fully clamped and simply supported rectangular plates subjected to uniform uniaxial compressive loading on two opposite edges of the plate are investigated thoroughly and the results are compared with the exact solution given in the monograph of Timoshenko and Gere (1961). The method is extended to the analysis of perforated plates, wherein the negative stiffness computed over the opening area from in-plane and out-of-plane deformation modes is superimposed to the stiffness of the full plate. Numerical results are then favorably compared with those obtained by finite element methods. Other cases such as; rectangular plates with eccentrically located openings of different shapes are studied and reported in this paper with regards to the effect of aspect ratio, hole size, and hole position on the buckling. For a square plate with a large circular opening at the center, diameter being 80 percent of the length, the present method yields buckling coefficient 12.5 percent higher than the one from the FEM.
An experimental investigation of the effect of composite patching repair was conducted to characterize the fatigue crack growth behavior in thick A16061-T6 (6mm) panels with single bonded patch by fiber reinforced composite patch. Four patch lengths and no patch plate were examined. An analytical procedure, involving three-dimensional finite element method having three layers to model cracked aluminum plate, epoxy by adhesive and composite patch, is calculated the stress intensity factors. From the calculated stress intensity factors, the fatigue crack growth rates are obtained. At the single patching type, different fatigue crack growth ratios through the plate thickness were investigated by using the experimental and analytical results. The results demonstrated that there was a definite variation in fatigue life depending on the size of composite patch. While crack reached the patch end, retardation of crack growth was also revealed in the bonded repair.
A hybrid damage monitoring scheme using parallel acceleration-impedance approaches is proposed to detect girder damage and support damage in steel plate-girder bridges which are under ambient train-induced excitations. The hybrid scheme consists of three phases: global and local damage monitoring in parallel manner, damage occurrence alarming and local damage identification, and detailed damage estimation. In the first phase, damage occurrence in a structure is globally monitored by changes in vibration features and, at the same moment, damage occurrence in local critical members is monitored by changes in impedance features. In the second phase, the occurrence of damage is alarmed and the type of damage is locally identified by recognizing patterns of vibration and impedance features. In the final phase, the location and severity of the locally identified damage are estimated by using modal strain energy-based damage index methods. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a steel plate-girder bridge model which was experimentally tested under model train-induced excitations. Acceleration responses and electro-mechanical impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of girder damage and support damage.
Antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic effects of alginic acids extracted from sea mustard(SM) and sporophyII of sea mustard(SSM) were studied by Salmonella typhimurium assay system and cytotoxicity and transformation tests using C3H/10T1/2 cells, respectively. alginic acid-SM andalginic acid-SSM showed antimutagenic effects on aflatoxin B1(AFB1)and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 strain. The antimutagenic effect showed concentration dependent manner. At the 2.5mg/plate concentration , alginic acid-SSM exhibited 92% antimutagenicity against AFB1 ,while alginic acid-SM revealed 54% antimutagenictity ,s howing effectiveness of the alginic acid-SSM for the antimutagenicity. Alginic acidSSm also significantly decreased the cytotoxicity induced by 3-methylcholanthrene(MCA) and MNNG in C3H/10T1/2 cells (p<0.05). The type II and type IIItransformation foci formation by MCA and MNNG were also decreased when the alginic acid-SSM was treated, indicating that the alginic acid -SSM reduces the carcinogenesis induced by these carcinogens. The MCA-treated culture produced 10.5foci of type II +III in C3H/10T1/2 cells, however, MCA + 0.2mg/ml alginic acid-SSM treated culture formed only 1.8 foci of the types II + III in C3H/10T1/2 cells, however , MCA+0.2mg/ml alginic acid -SSM treated culture formed only 1.8 foci of the types II+ III(p<0.05). While MNNG-treated culture formed 13.0 foci, MNNG + 0.2mg/ml alginic acid -SSM treated one produced 3.0 foci of type II+III(p<0.05). These results suggest that alginic acid-SSM can effectively prevent the mutagenicities and also decrease cytotoxicity and transformation induced by some carcinogens.
A strain able to grow up m-toluate minimal medium has been isolated after selective enrichment and given the name T81X, which was later identified as pseudomonase putida according to its morphological and biochemical characteristics. After treatment with plasmied specific curing agent, mitomycin C, followed by replica plating on m-toluate and xylene minimal agar plate, T81Xstrain has been shown to harbour a curable plasmid relating to the m-toluate and xylene metabolism. Spontaneous curing frquency of this plasmid was also greatly enhanced by growing on benzoate minimal medium. After then, it was also xylene metabogrowing on benzoate minimal medium. After then, it was found to be conjugally nontransmissible. From the comparative investigation of catechol 1,2-oxygenase and catechol 2,3-oxygenase activities in wild type and cured strain on various growth substrate, it appeared that T81X strain has both of these two enzymes while cured strain has catechol 1,2-oxygenase only. Growing on m-toluate minimal medium T81X strain should carry the genetic information necessary for coding the catechol 1,2-oxygense induced by m-toluate or benzoate, on that curable plasmid.
Background: After the resection at the mandibular site involving oral cancer, free vascularized fibular graft, a type of vascularized autograft, is often used for the mandibular reconstruction. Titanium mesh (T-mesh) and particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM), however, a type of non-vascularized autograft, can also be used for the reconstruction. With the T-mesh applied even in the chin and angle areas, an aesthetic contour with adequate strength and stable fixation can be achieved, and the pores of the mesh will allow the rapid revascularization of the bone graft site. Especially, this technique does not require microvascular training; as such, the surgery time can be shortened. This advantage allows older patients to undergo the reconstructive surgery. Case presentation: Reported in this article are two cases of mandibular reconstruction using the ready-made type and custom-made type T-mesh, respectively, after mandibular resection. We had operated double blind peer-review process. A 79-year-old female patient visited the authors' clinic with gingival swelling and pain on the left mandibular region. After wide excision and segmental mandibulectomy, a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap was used to cover the intraoral defect. Fourteen months postoperatively, reconstruction using a ready-made type T-mesh (Striker-Leibinger, Freibrug, Germany) and iliac PCBM was done to repair the mandible left body defect. Another 62-year-old female patient visited the authors' clinic with pain on the right mandibular region. After wide excision and segmental mandibulectomy on the mandibular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), reconstruction was done with a reconstruction plate and a right fibula free flap. Sixteen months postoperatively, reconstruction using a custom-made type T-mesh and iliac PCBM was done to repair the mandibular defect after the failure of the fibula free flap. The CAD-CAM T-mesh was made prior to the operation. Conclusions: In both cases, sufficient new-bone formation was observed in terms of volume and strength. In the CAD-CAM custom-made type T-mesh case, especially, it was much easier to fix screws onto the adjacent mandible, and after the removal of the mesh, the appearance of both patients improved, and the neo-mandibular body showed adequate bony volume for implant or prosthetic restoration.
Purpose: Prior to closure of the epiphysis of the distal phalanx, fracture usually occurs through the growth plate, Salter-Harris type I or II, or through the juxtaepiphyseal region 1 to 2 mm distal to the growth plate. The terminal tendon of extensor inserts into the epiphysis only, while insertion site of the flexor digitorum profundus spans both the epiphysis and metaphysis. Because of the difference between these tendon insertions, this injury mimics a mallet deformity. But, this type of injury does not involve a tear or avulsion of the extensor, unlike mallet finger of adults. Seymour was the first to describe this type of injury in children and called after his name, Seymour's fracture. This fracture is prone to infection or remain the residual deformity unless adequate treatment. Methods: We report a case of Seymour's fracture. A 9-year-old boy presented a laceration of the nail matrix, with the nail lies degloved from the nail fold on the right middle finger gotten from an impact against a door. An X-ray examination showed the fracture line lying 1 mm distal to the growth plate. The injury was treated with debridement and the fracture was reduced by applying hyperextension force. Under the C-arm, a single 0.7 mm K-wire was used to immobilize the distal interphalangeal joint. Intravenous antibiotics were applied for 5 days after surgery. Results: The K-wire was removed in the 3rd week. No infection or significant deformity was found until follow-up of 12 months. Conclusions: Seymour's fracture may be at first classically mallet deformity by its appearance. But it is anatomically different and more problematic injury. If it isn't corrected at the time of injury, derangement of the extensor mechanism, and growth deformity of the distal phalanx may occur. The fracture site should be debrided, removed of any interposed soft tissue, and the patient should be given appropriate antibiotics. Reduction should be maintained by K-wire fixation. We experienced no infection or premature epiphyseal closure.
In this study, one side fillet welded T-joint, used in box type girder and other welding structure, was investigated by stress analysis and bending fatigue test without edge preparation, with variation of joint shape. The purpose of this study is to give the welding condiltion and design standard on manufacturing one side fillet welded T-joint. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained. 1) In one side fillet welded T-joint, the larger the leg length and the penetration depth, the greater the bending fatigue strength because reduction of stress and strain on toe and root. The increase of the longitudinal leg length rather than vertical leg length contributed to the increase in bending fatigue strength. 2) In one side fillet welded T-joint without edge preparation, both general manual welding and general automatic welding were carried out with same condition. In this case, automatic welding showed deeper penetration and more increased longitudinal leg length than manual welding, so that automatic welding offers greater bending fatigue strength. 3) For one side fillet welded T-joint without edge preparation with automatic welding, the ratio(h/t) of the leg length(h) and the main plate thickness(t) in which toe crake can occur was 1.0 over.
