  • Annual dose on the containment building wall of the interim storage facility at normal condition was calculated to estimate the dose rate transition of the facility of PWR spent nuclear fuel. In this study, source term was generated by ORIGEN-ARP with 4.5 wt% initial enrichment, 45,000 MWd/MTU burnup and 10 years cooling time. Modeling of the storage facility and the containment building and radiation shielding evaluations were conducted by MCNP code depending on the distance between the wall and the facility in the building. In the case of the centralized storage system, the distance required for the annual dose rate limit from 10CFR72 was estimated to be 50 m.

  • The $HgI_2$ single crystal which can be used for the ${\gamma}-ray$ detector at room temperature was grown by Temperature Oscillation Method. The low temperature photoluminescence, specific resistivity and trap concentration of $HgI_2$ single crystal were investigated. Three main luminescence bands were observed at 2.30eV, 2.20eV and 2.00eV at 20K, related to the excitons, I-vacancies and impurities, respectively. The specific resistivity and trap concentration of $HgI_2$ single crystal were $10^{11}{\Omega}\;cm\;and\;1.8{\times}10^{14}/cm^3$ at room temperature, respectively. Also the radiation detecting system was deviced by $HgI_2$ ${\gamma}-ray$ detector, one chip microprocessor, LCD module and personal computer. The prepared $HgI_2$ ${\gamma}-ray$ detector showed a good linearity of ${\gamma}-radiation$ dose for standard ${\gamma}-ray$.

  • This paper describes separation distance to protect radiocommunication services from the interference of inductive systems using frequencies below 30 MHz for the co-existence between radiocommunication services and inductive systems. For the analysis, the interference scenario model is proposed between inductive system and radiocommunication services. Then the calculation method of protection distance is suggested by comparing the radiation power of inductive system with the allowable interference level of victim services, radiocommunication services, according to the applied propagation model. Also, the protection distance for protecting radiocommunication services in the 30 MHz below is calculated through the interference analysis from RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) and PDP(Plasma Display Panel) TV based on the suggested method. The proposed calculation method was adopted as ITU-R recommendation in related with resolution 63 at ITU-R SG(Study Group) 1 meeting in June, 2012. It will be available to use for the protection of radiocommunication services from the interference of wireless power transfer system and power line telecommunication system.

  • A package to transport the high level radioactive materials is required to withstand the hypothetical accident conditions as well as normal transport conditions according to IAEA standards and domestic regulations. The regulations require that the package should maintain the shielding, thermal and structural integrities to release no radioactive material. In general, safety evaluation of packages is performed by experimental methods using scale model and/or analytical methods using computer codes. This paper presents the safety evaluation of package to transport the radioisotopes produced in the HANARO to the radioisotope production facility. Radiation shielding, thermal and structural analyses were peformed using the computer codes. It has been verified that the package is safe under hypothetical accident conditions as well as normal transport conditions.

  • Background: Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) plans in prostate cancer are compared and analyzed to investigate the low magnetic effect (0.35 T) on the dose distribution, with various dosimetric parameters according to low magnetic field. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients who received a 36.25 Gy in five fractions using the MR-IGRT system (ViewRay) were studied. For planning target volume (PTV), the point mean dose ($D_{mean}$), maximum dose ($D_{max}$), minimum dose ($D_{min}$) and volumes receiving 100% ($V_{100%}$), 95% ($V_{95%}$), and 90% ($V_{90%}$) of the total dose. For organs-at-risk (OARs), the differences compared using $D_{max}$, $V_{50%}$, $V_{80%}$, $V_{90%}$, and $V_{100%}$ of the rectum; $D_{max}$, $V_{50%}$, $V_{30Gy}$, $V_{100%}$ of the bladder; and $V_{30Gy}$ of both left and right femoral heads. For both the outer and inner shells near the skin, $D_{mean}$, $D_{min}$, and $D_{max}$ were compared. Results and Discussion: In PTV analysis, the maximum difference in volumes ($V_{100%}$, $V_{95%}$, and $V_{90%}$) according to low magnetic field was $0.54{\pm}0.63%$ in $V_{100%}$. For OAR, there was no significant difference of dose distribution on account of the low magnetic field. In results of the shells, although there were no noticeable differences in dose distribution, the average difference of dose distribution for the outer shell was $1.28{\pm}1.08Gy$ for $D_{max}$. Conclusion: In the PTV and OARs for prostate cancer, there are no statistically-significant differences between the plan calculated with and without a magnetic field. However, we confirm that the dose distribution significantly increases near the body shell when a magnetic field is applied.

  • The criticality analysis method using HELIOS-MASTER code system, which is the nuclear core analysis code system, was developed for the spent fuel storage of SMART-P reactor. We generated the macroscopic cross section of the geometric model with HELIOS and estimated the criticality of the 3-dimensional model with MASTER for SMART-P spent fuel storage. The validity of criticality analysis method for SMART-P spent fuel storage with the HELIOS-MASTER code system by 3-D MCNP calculation was also verified. The result of the criticality analysis with the HELIOS-MASTER code system is more conservative than that with the MCNP and the accuracy of this result is within the range of an allowable error. Because HELIOS-MASTER can perform the 3-D depletion calculation lot a spent fuel storage, it will be useful to perform the criticality analysis including a burnup credit in future.

  • Recently High-Definition Reference Korean-Man (HDRK-Man) and High-Definition Reference Korean-Woman (HDRK-Woman) were constructed in Korea. The HDRK phantoms were designed to represent respectively reference Korean male and female to calculate effective doses for Korean by performing Monte Carlo dose calculation. However, the Monte Carlo dose calculation requires detailed knowledge on computational human phantoms and Monte Carlo simulation technique which regular researchers in radiation protection dosimetry and practicing health physicists do not have. Recently the UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) research group has developed, and opened to public, an online Monte Carlo dose calculation system called CALDOSE_X(www.caldose.org). By using the CALDOSE_X, one can easily perform Monte Carlo dose calculations. However, the CALDOSE_X used caucasian phantoms to calculate organ doses or effective doses which are limited for Korean. The present study developed an online reference Korean dose calculation system which can be used to calculate effective doses for Korean.

  • Ultralow background gamma-ray measurement system was installed to measure and analyze gamma-rays emitted from environmental and swipe samples. The background reduction techniques applied on this system are the passive shielding to surround the HPGe detector, an active external anticosmic shield to shield cosmic-rays and the nitrogen gas supply to minimize the introduction of ubiquitous radon decay nuclei. The performance test result showed that the system background at energies between 50 keV and 2 MeV is reduced about $10^{-2}$ order and the MDA is so low as to be suitable for the environmental sample analysis. But it is appeared that the neutron produced by cosmic-ray increases the background at low energy region.

  • Fluorescence in situ hybridization with chromosome-specific probe has been shown to be a valid and rapid method for detection of chromosome rearrangements induced by radiation. This method is useful for quantifying structural aberrations, expecially for stable ones, such as translocation and insertion, which are difficult to detect with conventional method in human lymphocyte. In order to apply FISH method for high dose biological dosimetry, chromosomal abberations by radiation at doses of 1, 3, 5, and 7Gy were analysed with whole chromosome-specific probes by human chromosome 1, 2 and 4 according to PAINT system. The frequencies of stable translocation per cell equivalent were 0.04, 0.33, 1.22, 2.62, and 5.58 for the lymphocyte exposed to 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7Gy, respectively, and those of dicentric were 0.00, 0.06, 0.52, 1.19 and 2.44, respectively. Significantly more translocation of t(Ab), a translocated chromosome with a piece of painted acentric matrial 'b' attached to unpainted piece containing centromere 'A', than reciprocal chromosome t(Ba) was observed. The frequencies of all type of chromosome rearrangements increased with dose. From above result, FISH seemed to be useful for radiation biodosimetry by which the frequencies of various types of stable aberrations in human lymphocyte can be observed more easily than by conventional method and so will improve our ability to perform meaningful biodosimetry.

  • Background: The scattered photons cause reduction of the contrast of radiographic image and it results in the degradation of the quality of the image. In order to acquire better quality image, an anti-scattering x-ray gird should be equipped in radiography system. Materials and Methods: The X-ray anti-scattering grid of the inclined type based on the hybrid concept for that of parallel and focused type was tested by MCNP code. The MCNPX 2.7.0 was used for the simulation based test. The geometry for the test was based on the IEC 60627 which was an international standard for diagnostic X-ray imaging equipment-Characteristics of general purpose and mammographic anti-scatter grids. Results and Discussion: The performance of grids with four inclined shielding material types was compared with that of the parallel type. The grid with completely tapered type the best performance where there were little performance difference according to the degree of inclination. Conclusion: It was shown that the grid of inclined type had better performance than that of parallel one.
