Ground-source(Geothermal) heat pump(GSHP) systems can achieve a higher coefficient of performance than conventional air-source heat pump(ASHP) systems. However, GSHP systems are not widespread because of their expensive installation costs. The authors have developed a GSHP system that employs the cast-in-place concrete pile foundations of a building as heat exchangers in order to reduce the initial cost. In this system, eight U-tubes are arranged around the surface of a cast-in-place concrete pile foundation. The heat exchange capability of this system, subterranean temperature changes and heat pump performance were investigated in a full-scale experiment. As a result, the average values for heat rejection were 186~201 W/m(per pile, 25 W/m per pair of tubes) while cooling. The average COP of this system was 4.6 while cooling; rendering this system more effective in energy saving terms than the typical ASHP systems.
Recently, small and medium-sized buildings have employed a multi-heat pump. The major benefits of the multi-heat pump over a conventional system are that it is easier system to maintain along with a diversification of facility use, and high comfortability. The performance of multi-heat pump systems can be enhanced by using geothermal energy instead of air source energy. This paper describes the multi-heat pumps applied in an ground source heat pump system for an actual building. The performance of a ground source multi-heat pump installed in the field was investigated in cooling mode. The maximum COP of the systems with single U-tube and double tube ground loop heat exchangers were 6.6 and 6.0, respectively. It is suggested that the new algorithms to control the flow rate of secondary fluid for ground loop heat exchanger have to be developed in order to enhance the performance of the system.

The present study has conducted cycle design and control technology of a water source VRF heat pump system. Previously, study of a simultaneous heating and cooling in an air source VRF heat pump system has been conducted. However, performance data and design methods for simultaneous heating and cooling in a water source VRF heat pump system are limited in the literature, due to various system parameters and operating conditions. In this study, the operating characteristics and performances of a simultaneous heating and cooling heat pump system are carried out, in simultaneous operation modes. Control logics of an EEV are developed for flow rate control to the outdoor unit, and are verified. When the control logics are applied, the simultaneous cooling and heating performances are sufficiently achieved, and system COPs are increased by up to 23.4%.
A system heat pump provides the benefits of comfort, energy conservation and easy maintenance. Recently, the system heat pump has been employed in small and medium-sized buildings. However, the performance data and control algorithm for system heat pump are limited in literature due to complicated system parameters and operating conditions. In the present study, the performance of a system heat pump with two indoor unit is measured by varying indoor loads, EEV opening, and compressor speed. In addition, the integral optimum regulator which includes MIMO control algorithm is proposed. The capacity modulation and optimum capacity for each indoor unit can be adjusted by utilizing the EEVs opening and compressor speed. The proposed scheme shows appropriate control performance at test conditions.

In this study, comparative analysis of energy performance in Taebaek city, a test area, by applying hydrothermal, geothermal source and hybrid heat pump system to office, school and smart farms with different internal heat loads. The conclusion is as follows. In the load characteristics by use of buildings, it was found that office had a large cooling load compared to heating load, school had a large heating load compared to cooling load, and smart farm had only cooling load year-round. Performance analysis of the heat pump system in office shows that the cooling COP of the hydrothermal source is 5.12% and the heating COP is 3.22% lower based on the geothermal source, the cooling COP of the hybrid is 0.41% higher, and the heating COP is the difference in performance appeared sparsely. The performance analysis of the heat pump system in school showed that the cooling COP of the hydrothermal source was 10.44% and the heating COP 3.22% lower based on the geothermal source, and the performance difference between the hybrid cooling and heating COP was insignificant. Heat pump system performance analysis in smart farm only occurred with cooling load. Based on geothermal sources, the cooling COP of the hydrothermal source was 46% and the cooling COP of the hybrid was 19.65%, respectively.

Geothermal heat pump system has been spotlighted as an efficient building energy system, because it has great potentials for reducing energy in building air conditioning and reducing $CO_2$ emissions. However, higher initial cost is a barrier to the promotion of its use. Energy-pile and energy-slab are known as low cost ground heat exchangers comparing with conventional ground heat exchangers, because they utilize building structures as ground heat exchangers. This paper presents the daily cooling performance of a geothermal heat pump system with energy-pile and energy-slab. The energy-piles and the energy-slabs are connected to heat pump units in parallel. The cooling capacity of the system was nearly constant due to the stability of the ground heat exchangers. The stability of the energy-pile was a little higher than that of the energy-stab as a heat sink.

The geothermal heat pump systems were installed for heating and cooling of public buildings in Jincheon Eco-friendly Energy town. The heat pump system was operated at night to save on operational costs, and the cold heat was stored in thermal energy storage (TES). In this study, the performance of geothermal heat pump systems with the TES during the summer season was analyzed, and the operational costs with and without the TES were compared. The electric chiller model was used to simulate a heat pump applied without the TES system. Electric rates of each system were measured to calculate operational costs. When the TES is used in the air conditioning system, the electric load (30.4 MWh) calculated in the daytime can move to off-peak load time, and the operational cost is reduced by 36~54%.
In this paper, the cycle performance analysis for the COP of supercritical heat pump using various refrigerants is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters of the system. The working fluids are R134a, R22, R32, R290, R600, R600a, R1270 and R744. The operating parameters considered in this study include superheating degree of evaporator, temperature of gas cooler inlet and outlet, compressor efficiency and evaporating temperature in the supercritical heat pump system. The main results were summarized as follows : Superheating degree, temperature of gas cooler inlet and outlet, compressor efficiency and evaporating temperature of supercritical heat pump system have an effect on the COP of this system. With a thorough grasp of these effect, it is necessary to design the supercritical heat pump using R134a. And, in comparison of COP of supercritical heat pump using various refrigerants, R32 and R600 is the highest, and R744 is the lowest among other refrigerants. From these results, it is confirmed that the COP of supercritical heat pump using R744 is higher than that using freon refrigerants such as R32 and R134a.
In this study, the coefficient of performance of a vapour compression heat pump system was analyzed for the evaluation of the heat pump performance. A water-to-air heat pump was assembled and tested by changing the level of the compressor driving speed and the air mass flow rate during air heating process. The coefficient of performance for air heating was 2.6~3.8 and that for water cooling was 1.0~1.4. The coefficient of performance was not depending on the levels of the compressor driving speed or levels of the air mass flow rate, but on the temperature of the air and water. The coefficient of performance for air heating increased by about 0.2 with the water temperature increasing by 1$^{\circ}C$.
The purpose of this study is to present the simulation results and an overview of the performance assessment of the Ground-Source Heat Pump(GSHP) system. The calculation was performed for two design factors. the spacing between boreholes and the depth of the vertical ground heat exchangers. And the simulation was carried out using the thermal simulation code TRNSYS with new model o( water to water heat pump developed by this study. As a result, it was anticipated that the yearly mean COPs of heat pump for heating and cooling are about 3.7 and 5.8 respectively and the heat pump can supply 100% of heating and cooling load all the year around.
