Incorporating Station Related Aging Failures in Bulk System Reliability Analysis

  • This paper proposes methods to incorporate station related aging failures in composite system reliability assessment. Aging failures of station components, such as circuit breakers and bus bars, are a major concern in composite power system planning and operation as an increasing number of station components approach the wear-out phase. This paper presents probabilistic models for circuit breakers involving aging failures and relevant evaluation techniques to examine the effects of station related aging outages. The technique developed to incorporate station related aging failures are illustrated by application to a small composite test system. The paper illustrates the effects of circuit breaker aging outages on bulk system reliability evaluation and examines the relative effects of variations in component age. System sensitivity analysis is illustrated by varying selected component parameters. The results show the implications of including component aging failure considerations in the overall analysis of a composite system.

Robust Fault-Tolerant Control for a Robot System Anticipating Joint Failures in the Presence of Uncertainties (불확실성의 존재에서 관절 고장을 가지는 로봇 시스템에 대한 강인한 내고장 제어)

  • This paper proposes a robust fault-tolerant control framework for robot manipulators to maintain the required performance and achieve task completion in the presence of both partial joint failures and complete joint failures and uncertainties. In the case of a complete joint failure or free-swinging joint failure causing the complete loss of torque on a joint, a fully-actuated robot manipulator can be viewed as an underactuated robot manipulator. To detect and identify a complete actuator failure, an on-line fault detection operation is also presented. The proposed fault-tolerant control system contains a robust adaptive controller overcoming partial joint failures based on robust adaptive control methodology, an on-line fault detector detecting and identifying complete joint failures, and a robust adaptive controller overcoming partial and complete joint failures, and so eventually it can face and overcome joint failures and uncertainties. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the proposed robust fault-tolerant control scheme.

  • This paper proposes an opportunistic age replacement policy. The system has two types of failures. Type I failures (minor failures) are removed by minimal repairs, whereas type II failures are removed by replacements. Type I and type II failures are age-dependent. A system is replaced at type II failure (catastrophic failure) or at the opportunity after age T, whichever occurs first. The cost of the minimal repair of the system at age z depends on the random part C(z) and the deterministic part c(z). The opportunity arises according to a Poisson process, independent of failures of the component. The expected cost rate is obtained. The optimal $T^{\ast}$ which would minimize the cost rate is discussed. Various special cases are considered. Finally, a numerical example is given.

  • This paper deals with the commutation failures of HVCD system. Commutation failures are caused by AC voltage distrotions at inverter side and cause the HVDC system oscillations. In this paper, in order to know a correct incidence and onset of the failures, theoretical analysis, the simulation and the investigation at actual system are carried out and the dynamic performace simulations are performed by PSCAD/EMTDC. Finally, the condition that the failure could be generated and how to reduce the failures are analyzed.

  • To improve the performance of DRAM, it is essential to reduce sensing failures caused by mismatch in SA. Unlike flip failures, delay failures can be degraded, especially when high-speed operation is required, making it a critical consideration in the design of next-generation memory. While conventional SA operates with all transistors starting amplification simultaneously, SDSA selectively activates only two transistors that output BLB, thus alleviating offset. In this paper, we validate the superior performance of SDSA in mitigating delay failures through simulations. It was confirmed that SDSA exhibits approximately a 90 % reduction in delay failures compared to conventional SA.

  • Catastrophic failures in power systems are rare but not uncommon events. Protection systems play an important role in the progression of events during a catastrophic failure. This paper will examine some of the historical records, and suggest possible improvements to protection systems which can have a positive impact on power system performance during catastrophic failures.

  • This paper considers the model of a k-out-of-n :G system with non-identical components which are subject to both forced and planned outages. For the forced outages, it assumes that there are the independent and common-cause outage events causing component failures. Then, the objective is to derive the upper and lower bounds on the mean operating time between system failures in the ample-server model. In addtion, the mean system failure times are also considered.

  • Fault diagnosis problem is currently a subject of extensive research in the control field. Although there are several works on the fault detection and isolation observers and the residual generators, those are con- cerned with only the detection of actuator failures or sensor failures. So, the perfect detection and isolation for the actuator and sensor failures is strongly required in the field of the practical applications. In this paper, a strategy of fault diagnosis using multiple proportional integral (PI) observers including the magnitude of actuator failures is provided. It is shown that actuator failures are detected and isolated perfectly by monitoring the integrated error between actual output and estimated output by a PI observer. Also in presence of complex actuator and sensor failures, these failures are detected and isolated by multiple PI observers.

  • An emergency response system (ERS) for vessel oil spills is a complex and dynamic system comprising a number of subsystems and activities. Failures may occur during the emergency response operations, this has negative impacts on the effectiveness of the ERS. Of the classes of problems in analyzing failures, the lack of quantitative data is fundamental. In fact, most of the empirical data collected via questionnaire survey is subjective in nature and is inevitably associated with uncertainties caused by the human being's inability to provide complete judgement. In addition, incomplete information and/or vagueness of the meaning about the failures add difficulties in evaluating the effectiveness of the system. Therefore this paper proposes a framework to evaluate the ERS effectiveness by using the combination of fuzzy reasoning and evidential synthesis approaches. Based on analyzing the procedure of ERS for oil spills, the failures in the system could be identified, using Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)to determine the relative weight of identified failures. Fuzzy reasoning combined with evidential synthesis is applied to evaluate the effectiveness of ERS for oil spills under uncertainties last. The proposed method is capable of dealing with uncertainties in data including ignorance and vagueness which traditional methods cannot effectively handle. A case study is used to illustrate the application of the proposed method.

Guaranteed Cost Control for a Class of Uncertain Delay Systems with Actuator Failures Based on Switching Method

  • This paper focuses on the problem of guaranteed cost control for a class of uncertain linear delay systems with actuator failures. When actuators suffer "serious failure" the never failed actuators can not stabilize the system, based on switching strategy of average dwell time method, under the condition that activation time ratio between the system without actuator failure and the system with actuator failures is not less than a specified constant, a sufficient condition for exponential stability and weighted guaranteed cost performance are developed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, as an example, a river pollution control problem illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
