  • In this study, we develop a novel high-throughput micronanopatterning system that can implement continuous mechanical pattern inscribing on flexible substrates using a rigid grating mold edge. We perform a conceptual design of the process principle, specific modeling, and buildup of a real system prototype. This research also carefully addresses several important issues related to processing and controlling, including precision motion, alignment, heating, and sensing to enable a successful micronanopatterning in a continuous and high-speed fashion. Various micronanopatterns with the desired profiles can be created by tuning the mold shape, temperature, force, and substrate material toward many potential applications involving electronics, photonics, displays, light sources, and sensors, which typically require a large-area and flexible configurations.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the dynamic properties, especially the damping and fatigue properites, of NR vulcanizates and to find out the vulcanizate which can be used as damping materials in industry. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. In the ODR test, the S-2 vulcanizate was the fastest one in terms of having reached to optimum cure times($t_{90}$) and, with the same formula, when 50phr of HAF carbon black loaded, the shortest optimum cure times has shown. 2. The S - 2 vulcanizate was the best than the others in the physical properties. In aging properties, however, the E - 1 vulcanizate appeared to be better than the other vulcanizates. 3. The results of the RDS test for the NR vulcanization system under the condition of 0.1% strain amplitude and 1 Hz frequency showed no connection between Tg and the the nature of the crosslinking system, but 50phr loading of HAF carbon black increased Tg. The damping values of vulcanizates in the elastic region showed a strong relations the damping values and the crosslinking system. The S - 2 vulcanizate with higher crosslink density had lower damping values than other vulcanizates, and furthermore, the SH - 2 vulcanizates with 50phr loading of HAF carbon black increased the damping values. 4. The Goodrich Flexometer test showed that the heat buildup for the gum NR vulcanizates was less than for those which contained 50phr of HAF carbon black. In particular, the fatigue life of the vulcanizate with lower damping values appeared to be longer than that of the vulcanizates with higher damping values. In the fatigue test, the increasment of the loading or the temperature, applied to the vulcanizates, appeared to be shorten their fatigue life.

  • A Varian Portal Dosimetry system was compared to an isocentrically mounted MapCHECK 2 diode array for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) QA. A Varian TrueBeam STx with an aS-1000 digital imaging panel was used to acquire VMAT QA images for 13 plans using four photon energies (6, 8, 10 and 15 MV). The EPID-based QA images were compared to the Portal Dose Image Prediction calculated in the Varian Eclipse treatment planning system (TPS). An isocentrically mounted Sun Nuclear MapCHECK 2 diode array with 5 cm water-equivalent buildup was also used for the VMAT QAs and the measurements were compared to a composite dose plane from the Eclipse TPS. A ${\gamma}$ test was implemented in the Sun Nuclear Patient software with 10% threshold and absolute comparison at 1%/1 mm (dose difference/distance-to-agreement), 2%/2 mm, and 3%/3 mm criteria for both QA methods. The two-tailed paired Student's t-test was employed to analyze the statistical significance at 95% confidence level. The average ${\gamma}$ passing rates were greater than 95% at 3%/3 mm using both methods for all four energies. The differences in the average passing rates between the two methods were within 1.7% and 1.6% of each other when analyzed at 2%/2 mm and 3%/3 mm, respectively. The EPID passing rates were somewhat better than the MapCHECK 2 when analyzed at 1%/1 mm; the difference was lower for 8 MV and 10 MV. However, the differences were not statistically significant for all criteria and energies (p-values >0.05). The EPID-based QA showed large off-axis over-response and dependence of ${\gamma}$ passing rate on energy, while the MapCHECK 2 was susceptible to the MLC tongue-and-groove effect. The two fluence-based QA techniques can be an alternative tool of VMAT QA to each other, if the limitations of each QA method (mechanical sag, detector response, and detector alignment) are carefully considered.

  • As a fuel for ship propulsion, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is currently considered a proven and reasonable solution for meeting the IMO emission regulations, with gas engines for the LNG-fueled ship covering a broad range of power outputs. For an LNG-fueled ship, the LNG bunkering process is different from the HFO bunkering process, in the sense that the cryogenic liquid transfer generates a considerable amount of boil-off gas (BOG). This study investigated the effect of the temperature difference on boil-off gas (BOG) production during ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering to the receiving tank of the LNG-fueled ship. A concept design was resumed for the cargo/fuel tanks in the LNG bunkering vessel and the receiving vessel, as well as for LNG handling systems. Subsequently, the storage tank capacities of the LNG were $4,500m^3$ for the bunkering vessel and $700m^3$ for the receiving vessel. Process dynamic simulations by Aspen HYSYS were performed under several bunkering scenarios, which demonstrated that the boil-off gas and resulting pressure buildup in the receiving vessel were mainly determined by the temperature difference between bunkering and the receiving tank, pressure of the receiving tank, and amount of remaining LNG.

  • In relation to $4^{th}$ industrial revolution, it is required to build a smart agricultural system using the pest control drones, which are emerging fast these days as a role to support pest control work of farmers and improve aging issues in farming. However, the absence of accurate criteria on management of the pest control drones and the effect of pesticide application is leading to damage to crops by pesticides. The extreme shortage of analysis of management of the pest control drones and relevant studies, and big differences in pest control efficiency depending on the operation skills of controllers are the biggest reasons for the damage. Therefore, this paper suggests a basic study on agricultural pest control drone operation system buildup to make out working schedules and calculate the dosage of pesticide by understanding the features of the pest control drones properly based on the control using smart operating mode.

  • This paper examines gamma-ray shielding properties of SBC-Bx glass system with the chemical composition of 40SiO2-10B2O3-xBaO-(45-x)CaO- yZnO- zMgO (where x = 0, 10, 20, 30, and 35 mol% and y = z = 6 mol%). Mass attenuation coefficient (µ/ρ) which is an essential parameter to study gamma-ray shielding properties was obtained in the photon energy range of 0.015-15 MeV using PHITS Monte Carlo code for the proposed glasses. The obtained results were compared with those calculated by WinXCOM program. Both the values of PHITS code and WinXCOM program were observed in very good agreement. The (µ/ρ values were then used to derive mean free path (MFP), electron density (Neff), effective atomic number (Zeff), and half value layer (HVL) for all the glasses involved. Additionally, G-P method was employed to estimate exposure buildup factor (EBF) for each glass in the energy range of 0.015-15 MeV up to penetration depths of 40 mfp. The results reveal that gamma-ray shielding effectiveness of the SBC-Bx glasses evolves with increasing BaO content in the glass sample. Such that SBC-B35 glass has superior shielding capacity against gamma-rays among the studied glasses. Gamma-ray shielding properties of SBC-B35 glass were compared with different conventional shielding materials, commercial glasses, and newly developed HMO glasse. Therefore, the investigated glasses have potential uses in gamma shielding applications.

  • This study investigated the effect of water retention characteristics between aged and fresh Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) on the stability of the landfill. A series of transient numerical modeling for the slope of an MSW landfill was performed considering the variation of water retention characteristics due to leachate circulation. Four different scenarios were considered in this analysis depending on how to obtain hydraulic conductivity and the aging degree of materials. Unsaturated hydraulic properties of the MSW used for the modeling were evaluated through modified hanging column tests. Different water retention properties and various landfill conditions, such as subgrade stiffness, leachate injection frequency, and gas and leachate collection system, were considered to investigate the pore water distribution and slope stability. The stability analyses related to the factor of safety showed that unsaturated properties under those varied conditions significantly impacted the slope stability, where the factor of safety decreased, ranging between 9.4 and 22%. The aged materials resulted in a higher factor of safety than fresh materials; however, after 1000 days, the factor of safety decreased by around 10.6% due to pore pressure buildup. The analysis results indicated that using fresh materials yielded higher factor of safety values. The landfill subgrade was found to have a significant impact on the factor of safety, which resulted in an average of 34% lower factor of safety in soft subgrades. The results also revealed that a failed leachate collection system (e.g., clogging) could result in landfill failure (factor of safety < 1) after around 298 days, while the leachate recirculation frequency has no critical impact on stability. In addition, the accumulation of gas pressure within the waste body resulted in factor of safety reductions as high as 24%. It is essential to consider factors related to the unsaturated hydraulic properties in designing a landfill to prevent landfill instability.

  • Soil filters are commonly used to protect the soil structures from eroding and piping. When filters are clogged by fine particles which are progressively accumulated, these may lead to buildup of excessive pore pressures also leading to instability in subsurface infrastructure. A filter in the backfill of a retaining wall, a filter adjacent to the lining of a tunnel, or a filter in the bottom of an earth dam can be clogged by transported fine particles. This causes reduction in the permeability, which in turn may lead to intolerable decreases in their drainage capacity. In this thesis, the extent of this reduction is addressed using results from both experimental and theoretical investigations. In the experimental phase, the permeability reduction of a filter is monitored when an influent of constant concentration flows into the filter (uncoupled test), and when the water flow through the soil-filter system to simulate an in-situ condition (coupled test), respectively. The results of coupled and uncoupled test are compared with among others. In the theoretical phase of the investigation, a representative elemental volume of the soil filter was modeled as an ensemble of capillary tubes and the permeability reduction due to physical clogging was simulated using basic principles of flow in cylindrical tubes. In general, it was found that the permeability was reduced by at least one order of magnitude, and that the results from the uncoupled test and theoretical investigations were in good agreement. It is observed that the amount of deposited particles of the coupled test matches fairly well with that of the uncoupled test, which indicates that the prediction of permeability reduction is possible by preforming the uncoupled test instead of the coupled test, and/or by utilizing the theoretical model.

  • The treatment planning and dosimetry of small fields for stereotactic radiosurgery with 10 MV x-ray isocentrically mounted linear accelerator is presented. Special consideration in this study was given to the variation of absorbed dose with field size, the central axis percent depth doses and the combined moving beam dose distribution. The collimator scatter correction factors of small fields $(1\times1\~3\times3cm^2)$ were measured with ion chamber at a target chamber distance of 300cm where the projected fields were larger than the polystyrene buildup caps and it was calibrated with the tissue equivalent solid state detectors of small size (TLD, PLD, ESR and semiconductors). The central axis percent depth doses for $1\timesl\;and\;3\times3cm^2$ fields could be derived with the same acuracy by interpolating between measured values for larger fields and calculated zero area data, and it was also calibrated with semiconductor detectors. The agreement between experimental and calculated data was found to be under $2\%$ within the fields. The three dimensional dose planning of stereotactic focusing irradiation on small size tumor regions was performed with dose planning computer system (Therac 2300) and was verified with film dosimetry. The more the number of strips and the wider the angle of arc rotation, the larger were the dose delivered on tumor and the less the dose to surrounding the normal tissues. The circular cone, we designed, improves the alignment, minimizes the penumbra of the beam and formats ball shape of treatment area without stellate patterns. These dosimetric techniques can provide adequate physics background for stereotactic radiosurgery with small radiation fields and 10MV x-ray beam.
