In this study, we explored a new approach for generating ions of organics and biomolecules using contactless atmospheric pressure ionization (C-API). That is, a tapered capillary (~20 cm) was connected to a syringe, which was coupled to a syringe pump for providing a given flow rate to introduce sample solution to the proximity of a mass spectrometer. The gas phase ions derived from analytes were readily formed in the capillary outlet, which was very close to the mass spectrometer (~1 mm). No external electric connection was applied on the capillary emitter. This setup is very simple, but it can function as an ion source. This approach can be readily used for the analysis of small molecules such as amino acids and large molecules such as peptides and proteins. The limit of the detection of this approach was estimated to be ~10 pM when using bradykinin as the sample. Thus, we believe that this approach should be very useful for being used as an alternative ion source because of its low cost, high sensitivity, simplicity, and ease of operation.
A sensitive, simple and highly selective liquid chromatography method of determination for extraction of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride from Allegra D tablet was developed. The chief benefit of the present method is the minimal sample preparation, as the procedure is only filtering through pore syringe filter. Two drugs (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, fexofenadine) were separated on a C$_{18}$ column and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The method had a chromatographic run time of 8.0 min. 1 ml of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride solution (1 mg/ml) was filtered through 0.22 um pore syringe filter. 50 ul of filtering solution was injected to HPLC pump and we knew the retention time (1.85 min) of separating of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride using UV detector at 280 nm. We used C$_{18}$ column (4.6 mm${\times}$250 mm), mobile phase solution (<0.05 mol/L NaH$_2$PO$_4$, 2 ml/L H$_3$PO$_4$>/CH$_3$CN / sodium dodesyl sulfate = 60 ml / 40 ml / 1 g). We separated psedoephedrine hydrochloride at run time of 1.85 min from Allegra D tablet solution (1 mg/ml) filtered through 0.22 um pore syringe filter using UV detector at 280 nm. Flow rate was set at 1.0 ml/min and the column temperature was set at 40$^{\circ}C$. Psedoephedrine hydrochloride solution (1 mg/ml) separated from Allegra D tablet was filtered through 0.22 um pore syringe filter and injected 50 ul. We confirmed the peak of psedoephedrine hydrochloride at same retention time and the separating solution was freeze-dried. In conclusion, A simple isocratic reverse-phase HPLC method has been developed that provides excellent separation of pseudoephedrine from Allegra D tablet.
Holstein cow ovaries obtained at a slaughterhouse were used to study the influence of the oocyte collection methods (slicing, puncture, aspiration I and II) on recovery efficiency and subsequent in vitro maturation and embryonic development competence of immature oocytes recovered. In the slicing method, the whole ovarian was chopped into small pieces with a surgical blade. In the puncture method, the whole ovarian surface was punctured by 18-g needle. In other 2 aspiration methods, collected oocytes by aspirating from the visible follicles using an 18-g needle attached to a 5 ml syringe (aspiration I) or using a constant negetive pressure (-80 mmHg) with a vacuum pump (aspiration II). The oocytes were classified into 4 classes on the basis of the morphology of cumulus cells and cytoplasmic appearance of oocyte. Slicing ($9.6{\pm}0.4$) and puncture ($9.7{\pm}0.4$)yielded a larger number of oocytes per ovary than other two aspiration methods (aspiration I and II were $5.8{\pm}0.3$and $5.6{\pm}0.4$, respectively) (p<0.05). The number of the highest quality oocytes (grade A) per ovary was significantly higher in slicing ($4.2{\pm}0.2$) and puncture ($4.6{\pm}0.1$) methods than in other methods (aspiration I and II were $1.2{\pm}0.2$ and $1.4{\pm}0.2$, respectively) (p<0.05). The rate of nuclear maturation of the highest and higher quality oocytes (grade A and grade B, respectively) was not affected by the oocytes collection methods. The oocytes collection methods also did not influence subsequent embryonic developmental competence after in vitro fertilization with M II stage oocytes. It is concluded that slicing and puncture methods of the ovaries can be used as an alternative techniques to aspiration by the syringe or vacuum pump.

In this study, a multichannel gas-liquid microextraction system is designed by integrating the automatic elution of extraction line and multichannel gas-purging liquid phase microextraction. The system uses an injection pump and inert gas to push the extraction solvent to a sample bottle of a gas-phase color autosampler and then implements multichannel gas-liquid microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The system also employs a three-way integrated micro-high-temperature heater, syringe pump, and microflow controller to realize the simultaneous processing of multiple groups of samples, thus improving the sample pretreatment speed and reproducibility and reducing human error. Autoinjection experiments were implemented with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon standard samples. The experiments show that the average recovery rate of the system exceeds 70%, and the relative standard among the channels is less than 15%.
A custom micro-PIV optics assembly has been used to measure the flow fold inside a T-junction of a microchannel. The micro-PIV system consists of microscope objectives of various magnifications, a dichroic cube, and an 8-bit CCD camera. Fluorescent particles of diameters 620 nm have been used with a Nd:YAG laser and color filters. A programmable syringe pump with Teflon tubings were used to inject particle-seeded distilled water into the channel at flow rates of 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 mL/hr. The micro-channels are fabricated with PDMS with a silicon mold, then O$_{2}$ -ion bonded onto a slide glass. Results show differences in flow characteristics and resolution according to fluid injection rates, and magnifications, respectively. The results include PIV data with vector-to-vector distances of 2 $\mu$m with 32 pixel-square interrogation windows at 50$\%$ overlap.

The effect of periodic blowing and suction of upstream flow on the separated shear flow behind the vertical fence was experimentally investigated. The fence was submerged in the turbulent shear flow and DPIV method was used to measure the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence. Periodic blowing and suction flow was precisely generated by the syringe pump. Spanwise nozzle made 2D planar periodic jet flow in front of the fence and the effect of frequency and maximum jet velocity was studied. From the results, the reattachment length can be reduced by 60% of uncontrolled fence case under the control.
Cold blood potassium cardioplegia, by two types of the infusion systems, was used in 45 patients who were undergone the open cardiac operation. Method A [in 25 patients] was the syringe infusion system and method B [in 20 patients] was the pump infusion system. Cold blood potassium cardioplegic solution was used less amount on method B than method A. Serum potassium was often increased significantly on method A as a result of excessive infusion of cold blood potassium cardioplegic solution. But method B, excessive infusion of cold blood potassium cardioplegic solution was prevented by reperfusion of the previous infused cold blood potassium cardioplegic solution through the recirculation system. Alteration of infused rate and concentration of potassium in cold blood potassium cardioplegic solution during infusion [which might be suggested on the method A] could be controlled on method B.
Micro planar type liquid propellant thruster was fabricated by MEMS manufacturing process for micro/nano satellites applications. 90 wt.% hydrogen peroxide was used as propellant and for propellant decomposition, Pt/Al2O3 was used as catalyst. Micro thruster structure was made by 5 photosensitive glasses patterned with thruster component profiles. Objective thrust was 50 mN and required hydrogen peroxide mass flow was 2.1 ml/min, which was supplied by syringe pump and teflon tube in experimental test. Performance test said that average steady thrust was approximately 30 mN, around 60% of objective thrust, and transient time was about 5 sec. It is estimated that extended response time was due to high thermal energy loss of micro scale thruster and low enthalpy input by propellant mass flow.
This paper describes a selective synthetic method of fabricating Ag nanowires by using a modified polyol process. To synthesize the Ag nanowire, an ethylene glycolic solution of silver nitrate and an ethylene glycolic solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone solution containing a small amount of organic oxidant, 1,4-benzoquinone, were slowly added to a hot ethylene glycol medium at $160^{\circ}C$ for 8 min using a syringe pump. The reaction mixtures were heated for an additional 45 min and cooled to room temperature. Finally, the silver nanomaterials were isolated from the mixture by centrifugation. The crystal structure of the nanomaterials was investigated by powder X-ray diffraction analyses, and their morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. A small amount of organic oxidant, 1,4-benzoquinone, played a significant role in controlling the morphology during crystal growth. Consequently, Ag nanowires rather than Ag nanoparticles were selectively obtained.
For controlling micro-flows inside a LOC (lab-on-a-chip) a syringe pump or an electronic device for EOF(electro-osmotic flow) have been used in general. However, these devices are so large and heavy that they are burdensome in the development of a portable micro-TAS (total analysis system). In this study, a new flow control system employing pressure chambers, digital switches and speed controllers was developed. This system could effectively control the micro-scale flows inside a LOC without any mechanical actuators or electronic devices We also checked the feasibility of this new control system by applying it to a LOC of micro-mixer type. Performance tests show that the developed control system has very good performance. Because the flow rate in LOC is controlled easily by throttling the speed controller, the flows in complicate microchannels network can be also controlled precisely.
