  • The aim of this research was to investigate the manufacturing possibility of the paper sludge-synthetic fiber-wood fiber composite. Three levels of the formulation of paper sludge, synthetic fiber and wood fiber (5:5:90, 15:15:70, 25:25:50), two types of adhesive (PMDI, urea-formaldehyde resin) and three levels of density(0.7, 0.8, 0.9) were designed. From the test result, composites with similar or better properties, when compared with commercial fiberboard, appeared to be possible by the addition of up to 30~50% paper sludge and synthetic fiber into wood fiber.

  • Most of the libraries and archives that lacks conservation lab facilities, frequently apply common synthetic resin adhesives such as PVAc group(Pa), acrylic group(Ac) and PVP group(Pv) on simple repairs. The archival quality synthetic adhesive(Pa-1) that is used at the National Library of Korea and the common synthetic resin adhesives were selected for the experiments. Accelerated aging test was applied on the adhesive samples and change of the pH and chromaticity were measured for one month. As the result of the pH mesurments, Pa-1 and Ac-2 were at the acceptable pH range. As the result of the chromaticity mesurments, degree of yellowing(${\Delta}b^*$) showed smaller change to greater change in the following order; Pa-1

  • The regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have been steadily strengthened in ship emissions. Accordingly, there is a growing need for development of related technologies for the removal of contaminants that may occur during the treatment of SOx and NOx using a wet scrubber. However, this system also leads to wastewater production when the exhaust gas is scrubbed. In this research, we evaluated the performance of an ion selective resin process in accordance with scrubber wastewater discharge regulations, specifically nitrate discharge, by the IMO. Accelerated real and synthetic wastewater of wet scrubbers, contained high amounts of TDS with high nitrate, is used as feed water in lab scale systems. Furthermore, a pilot scale dissolved air flotation (DAF) using microbubble generator with ion exchange resin process was combined and developed in order to apply for the treatment of wet scrubber wastewater. The results of the present study revealed that operating conditions, such as resin property, bed volume (BV), and inlet wastewater flow rate, significantly affect the removal performance. Finally, through a pilot test, DAF with ion exchange resin process showed a noticeable improvement of the nitrate removal rate compared to the single DAF process.

  • Resins were synthesized by mixing 1-aza-15-crown-5 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous materials) and divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer with crosslinkage of 1%, 2%, 8%, and 16% by substitution reaction. The characteristic of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), surface area (BET), and IR-spectroscopy. The effects of pH, time, dielectric constant of solvent and crosslinkage on adsorption of metal ion by the synthetic resin adsorbent were investigated. The metal ion showed a fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in ethanol was in an increasing order of uranium $(UO_2^{2+})$ > lead $(Pb^{2+})$ > chromium $(Cr^{3+})$ ion. The adsorption was in the order of 1%, 2%, 8%, and 16% crosslinkage resin and adsorption of resin decreased in proportion to the order of dielectric constant of solvents.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adhesive properties of polyurethane mixed aqueous dispersions by omitting the primer, dealing with the preparation of skins for synthetic leather with excellent adhesion by omitting the pre-treatment process. The two-component mixed polyurethane water dispersion was prepared by synthesizing an ester-based polyurethane resin (PU-T) and a carbonate-based polyurethane resin (PU-C) to obtain the final resin. As a result of measuring the peel strength of the adhesive specimens omitting the pre-treatment agent, it was confirmed that the state adhesive strength (ethylene vinyl acetate (middle): $4.2kg_f/cm$ and rubber (outsole): $4.4kg_f/cm$) there was. This makes it possible to omit the pre-treatment process which has been indispensably used in the shoe manufacturing process, thereby reducing the process time and reducing the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated in the pre-treatment product, resulting in environmentally advantageous.

  • Resins with cryptand 22 macrocyclic ligand attached to chloromethylated styrene-1,4-divinylbenzene by substitution reaction were prepared and the effect of pH, metal concentration and cross-linkage of the matrix on the adsorption for $UO_2^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$ and $Sm^{3+}$ was investigated. The metal ion was not adsorbed on the resins pH range below 3 but above pH 4 fast adsorption behavior was showed. The resin selectivity determined in ethanol matrix was in increasing order $UO_2^{2+}{\;}>Cd^{2+}{\;}Sm^{3+}$. In addition, these metal ion could be separated on the column packed with 1% crosslinked resin by pH 2.5 $HNO_3$ as an eluent.

  • Environmental problems caused by extensive use of polymeric materials arise mainly due to lack of landfill space and depletion of finite natural resources of fossil raw materials like petroleum or natural gas. The substitution of synthetic petroleum-based resins with natural biodegradable resins appears to be one appropriate measure to remedy the above-mentioned situation. This study presents the development of a composite that uses environmentally degradable starch-based resin as matrix and natural mineral basalt fibres as reinforcement, and investigates the fibre's and the composite's mechanical properties. The tensile strength of single basalt fibres was verified by means of single fibre tensile tests and statistically investigated by means of a Weibull analysis. Prepreg sheets were manufactured by means of a modified doctor blade system and hot power press. The sheets were used to manufacture specimens with fibre volume contents ranging from 33% to 61%. Specimens were tested for tensile strength, flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength. Composites manufactured during this study exhibited tensile and flexural strength of up to 517 MPa and 157 MPa, respectively.
