  • For the determination of a reservoir capacity Rippl's mass-curve method has long been used with the past river flow data assuming the same flow records will be repeated in the future. In this study the synthetic generation methods of thomas-Fiering type and harmonic analysis were used to synthetically generate 50 years of monthly river inflows to three single-purpose reservoris(Chuncheon, Chungpyong, Hwacheon) and three multi-purpose reservoirs(Soyany, Andon, Daichung). The generated sequences of monthly flows were analyzed based on the range concept, and hence the so-determined ranges for single-prupose and multi-purpose rewervoirs were correlated with the number of monthly flow subseries, resulting an empirical equation of the Feller's type. (1) Single-purpose reservoir $$R_n=2.8357 I\sqrt{n}$$ (2) Multi-purpose reservoir $$R_n=2.5145 I\sqrt{n}$$ where, $R_n$:Range(㎥/S-M) n:periodic(12 months, ……120 months) I:Input mean(㎥/S-M) In Korea, the monthly inflow data generation will be fit to the Thomas-Fiering type, and this paper shows that the periodic range is easily calculated without the Rippl's mass-curve method as shown above formula.

  • The generated sequences of monthly flows were analyzed based on the range concept. With the optimum operation rule of the reservoirs as the one which maximizes the wateruse downstream the waterrelease from the reservoir was determined and with \ulcorner consideration to the mean inflows and the range of monthly flows the required reservoirs capacity was stochastically determind. It is suggested that the result obtained in this study would be applied to approximately estimate, in the stage of preliminary design, the required capacity of a reservoir in question with the limited information such as the mean monthly inflow and the period of reservoir operation. For the determination of a reservoir capacity Rippl's mass-curve method has been long used with the past river flow data assuming the same flow records will be repeated in the future. This study aims to find out a better method for determining the reservoir capacity by employing the analytical theory based on the stochastic process. For the present study the synthetic generation methods of Thomas-Fiering type was used to synthetically generate 50 years of monthly river inflows to three single-purpose reservoirs and three multi-purpose reservoirs.

  • Reservoir operations during the flood season should consider both the flood control and water supply objectives. This study proposed Set Control Algorithm (SCA) as a reservoir operation method, which guarantees both objectives. The concept behind SCA is to provide operators with a set of actions that guarantee feasibility, given a set of operational constraints, and to let them select decisions within a set that satisfies other considerations. The inflow sets used in this study included; observed data, synthetic data, and ESP(Ensemble Streamflow Prediction) scenarios. Applied to the Chungju Dam operations, SCA was compared to the variable flood restricted elevation, as well as the current flood restricted elevation. A 5-year simulation analysis showed that SCA performed better than the other operation methods, and that SCA coupled with ESP performed best among the SCA cases.

  • This study was performed to figure out what would be effective to maintain good water quality in the retention pond which was badly polluted before. In order to keep the good water quality of the retention pond it is necessary to prevent outer non-point source pollutants from flowing into the pond. In this study, we proposed to use porous slag as a blockage of the inflow into the pond from external non-point sources. We experimented with porous slag nets to see how the water is effected. With the results of the experiments, we found out there is a close correlation($r^2=0.9765$) between contact time and the removal rate of phosphorus, therefore we can conclude that contact time affects removal rate greatly. Synthetic wastewater, activated sludge effluent, and sewage were passed through a porous slag packed bed, both phosphorus and the suspended solid in water were removed highly. With the results of these tests, we proposed to set up a porous slag packed bed inside of the retention pond and revetment to prevent external non-point source pollutants flowing into the retention pond.

  • Objectives Tricalcium phosphate and calcium hydrogenorthophosphate are high production volume chemicals, mainly used as foodstuff additives, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, synthetic resin, and disinfectants. Phosphate has the potential to cause increased algal growth leading to eutrophication in the aquatic environment. However, there is no adequate information available on risk assessment or acute and chronic toxicity. The aim of this research is to evaluate the toxic potential of phosphate compounds in the aquatic environment. Methods An aquatic toxicity test of phosphate was conducted, and its physico-chemical properties were obtained from a database recommended in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guidance manual. An ecotoxicity test using fish, Daphnia, and algae was conducted by the good laboratory practice facility according to the OECD TG guidelines for testing of chemicals, to secure reliable data. Results The results of the ecotoxicity tests of tricalcium phosphate and calcium hydrogenorthophosphate are as follows: In an acute toxicity test with Oryzias latipes, 96 hr 50% lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) was >100 (measured:>2.14) mg/L and >100 (measured: >13.5) mg/L, respectively. In the Daphnia test, 48 hr 50% effective concentration ($EC_{50}$) was >100 (measured: >5.35) mg/L and >100 (measured: >2.9) mg/L, respectively. In a growth inhibition test with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, 72 hr $EC_{50}$ was >100 (measured: >1.56) mg/L and >100 (measured: >4.4) mg/L, respectively. Conclusions Based on the results of the ecotoxicity test of phosphate using fish, Daphnia, and algae, $L(E)C_{50}$ was above 100 mg/L (nominal), indicating no toxicity. In general, the total phosphorus concentration including phosphate in rivers and lakes reaches levels of several ppm, suggesting that phosphate has no toxic effects. However, excessive inflow of phosphate into aquatic ecosystems has the potential to cause eutrophication due to algal growth.

  • The tropospheric ozone is a pollutant that causes a great deal of damage to humans and ecosystems worldwide. In the event that ozone moves downwind from its source, a localized problem becomes a regional and global problem. To enhance ozone monitoring efficiency, geostationary satellites with continuous diurnal observations have been developed. The objective of this study is to derive the Tropospheric Ozone Movement Vector (TOMV) by employing continuous observations of tropospheric ozone from geostationary satellites for the first time in the world. In the absence of Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Satellite (GEMS) tropospheric ozone observation data, the GEOS-Chem model calculated values were used as synthetic data. Comparing TOMV with GEOS-Chem, the TOMV algorithm overestimated wind speed, but it correctly calculated wind direction represented by pollution movement. The ozone influx can also be calculated using the calculated ozone movement speed and direction multiplied by the observed ozone concentration. As an alternative to a backward trajectory method, this approach will provide better forecasting and analysis by monitoring tropospheric ozone inflow characteristics on a continuous basis. However, if the boundary of the ozone distribution is unclear, motion detection may not be accurate. In spite of this, the TOMV method may prove useful for monitoring and forecasting pollution based on geostationary environmental satellites in the future.

  • X-ray powder diffraction study was conducted on the bulk modulus and phase transition behavior of synthetic zeolite X under high temperature and high pressure. Water and HCO3- solution were used as a PTM. Sample was heated and pressurized up to 250 ℃ and 5.18 GPa. The change of unit cell volume and phase transition were observed by X-ray diffraction. The lattice constants and unit cell volume of zeolite X, gmelinite, natrolite, and smectite were calculated using the GSAS2 program to which Le Bail's whole powder pattern decomposition (WPPD) method was applied. The bulk modulus of each zeolite X and smectite were calculated using the EosFit program to which the Birch-Murnaghan equation was applied. The bulk modulus of zeolite X is 89(3) GPa in water run, and zeolite X is 92(3) GPa in HCO3- solution run. In both run, pressure induced hydration (PIH) occurred due to the inflow of PTM into the zeolite X framework at initial pressure. Zeolite X transited to gmelinite, natrolite, and smectite in water run. Zeolite X, however, transited to smectite in HCO3- solution run. Interzeolite transformation occurred in water run, and did not occur in HCO3- solution run, which is assumed that conflict between the environment to form zeolite and the pH of the HCO3- solution.

  • In this study, the hydrochemical and the isotopic characteristics of major streams in the Daejeon area were investigated during rainy and dry seasons. The stream water shows the electrical conductivity of the range of $37{\sim}527{\mu}s$/cm, and pH $6.21{\sim}9.83$. The chemical composition of stream waters can be grouped as three types: the upper streams of Ca(Mg)-$HCO_3$ type, Ca(Mg)-$SO_4(Cl)$ type of middle streams flowing through urban area, and Na(Ca)-$HCO_3$(Cl, $SO_4$) type of the down streams. Based on in-situ investigation, the high pH of stream waters flowing through urban area is likely to be caused by the inflow of a synthetic detergent discharging from the apartment complex. The electrical conductivity of stream waters at a dry season is higher than those of at a rainy season. We suggest that the hydro-chemical composition of stream waters in the Daejeon area was affected by the discharging water from the sewage treatment facilities and anthropogenic contaminants as well as the interaction with soil and rocks. ${\delta}D$ and ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of the stream waters show the relationship of ${\delta}D=6.45{\delta}^{18}O-7.4$, which is plotted at a lower area than global meteoric water line(GMWL) of Craig(1961). It is likely that this isotopic range results from the evaporation effect of stram waters and the change of an air mass. The isotope value shows an increasing trend from upper stream to lower stream, that reflects the isotopic altitude effect. The relationship between ${\delta}^{13}C$ and $EpCO_2$ indicates that the carbon as bicarbonate in stream water is mainly originated from $CO_2$ in the air and organic materials. The increasing trend of ${\delta}^{13}C$ value from upper stream waters to lower stream waters can be attributed to the following reasons: (1) an increasing dissolution of $CO_2$ gas from a contaminated air in downtown area of the Daejeon, and (2) the increment of an inorganic carbon of groundwater inflowed into stream by base flow. Based on the relationship between ${\delta}^{34}S$ and $SO_4$ of stream waters, the stream waters can be divided into four groups. $SO_4$ content increases as a following order: upper and middle Gab stream${\delta}^{34}S$ value decreases as above order. ${\delta}^{34}S$ value indicates that sulfur of stream waters is mainly originated from atmosphere, and is additionally supplied by pyrite source according to the increase of sulfate content. The sulfur isotope analysis of a synthetic detergent and sewage water as a potential source of the sulfur in stream waters is furtherly needed.

  • In line with future changes in the marine environment, Aids to Navigation has been used in various fields and their use is increasing. The term "Aids to Navigation" means an aid to navigation prescribed by Ordinance of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries which shows navigating ships the position and direction of the ships, position of obstacles, etc. through lights, shapes, colors, sound, radio waves, etc. Also now the use of Aids to Navigation is transforming into a means of identifying and recording the marine weather environment by mounting various sensors and cameras. However, Aids to Navigation are mainly lost due to collisions with ships, and in particular, safety accidents occur because of poor observation visibility due to sea fog. The inflow of sea fog poses risks to ports and sea transportation, and it is not easy to predict sea fog because of the large difference in the possibility of occurrence depending on time and region. In addition, it is difficult to manage individually due to the features of Aids to Navigation distributed throughout the sea. To solve this problem, this paper aims to identify the marine weather environment by estimating sea fog level approximately with images taken by cameras mounted on Aids to Navigation and to resolve safety accidents caused by weather. Instead of optical and temperature sensors that are difficult to install and expensive to measure sea fog level, sea fog level is measured through the use of general images of cameras mounted on Aids to Navigation. Furthermore, as a prior study for real-time sea fog level estimation in various seas, the sea fog level criteria are presented using the Haze Model and Dark Channel Prior. A specific threshold value is set in the image through Dark Channel Prior(DCP), and based on this, the number of pixels without sea fog is found in the entire image to estimate the sea fog level. Experimental results demonstrate the possibility of estimating the sea fog level using synthetic haze image dataset and real haze image dataset.
