  • Flame structure, which contains a useful information for studying combustion instability of the flame, is often quantitatively visualized with PLIF (planar laser-induced fluorescence) and/or chemiluminescence images. The latter, a line-integral of a flame property, needs to be preprocessed before being inverted, mainly due to its inherent noise and the axisymmetry assumption of the inversion. A preprocessing scheme utilizing multi-division of ROI (region of interest) of the chemiluminescence image is proposed. Its feasibility has been tested with OH PLIF and $OH^*$ chemiluminescence images of SNG (synthetic natural gas) swirl-stabilized flames taken from a model gas turbine combustor. It turns out that the multi-division technique outperforms two conventional ones: those are, one without preprocessing and the other with uni-division preprocessing, reconstructing the SNG flame structure much better than its two counterparts, when compared with the corresponding OH PLIF images. It is also found that the Canny edge detection algorithm used for detecting edges in the multi-division method works better than the Sobel algorithm does.

  • Characteristics of pyrolytic gasification were examined for the waste tire and 7 types of waste synthetic resin, using a bench scale experimental facility. the product gas temperature of waste tires was $150~300^{\circ}C$ and the temperature profile in the combustion zone of the lower reactor part tended to be clearly distinguished from that in the gasification zone of the upper part. However, in the case of waste synthetic resins, there were no clear distinction and temperature fluctuation was severe, depending on the reaction time. Product gas quantity, which depends on that of supplied (1st) air, was found to be 105~135% of the 1st air amount at the steady state. The concentration of noncombustible components in product gas was 80~90 vol.% and the high heating value of the product gas calculated from gas compositions was 1,500~3,000 kcal/N㎥ for waste tire, and 300~2,900 kcal/N㎥ for waste synthetic resins, respectively. Heating value of product gas and combustible gas concentration were increased in proportion to 1st air amount when 1st air amount is below $0.35N\textrm{m}^3$/min.

  • The diamond synthesis by combustion flame method is considerably affected by the substrate surface temperature and its distribution which are mainly controlled by the ratio of mixed gas, $O_2/C_2H_2$. In order to elucidate the role of gas ratio in the diamond synthetic process by combustion flame, under various gas ratios (R=0.87~0.98; R=ratio of flow-rate of $O_2/C_2H_2$ gas) the substrate temperature was measured by using thermal video system and the morphological change of diamond crystals was analysed by using SEM, Raman spectroscope, and X-ray diffraction method. With increasing the gas ratio, i.e., decreasing the hydrocarbon content, the nucleation rate of diamond crystal was lowerd. It was also found that the morphology of diamond crystals changed from the cubo-octahedron type consisting of (100), (111) plane to the octahedron type of (111) plane. The increase of the substrate temperature consistently resulted in the increase of the nucleation rate as well as the growth rate of diamond crystals in which the surface of diamond crystal dominantly consisting of (100) plane.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the flame stability of the synthetic gas (syngas) using an impinging premixed jet burner. Since the syngas mainly consisted of $H_2$ and CO, the $H_2$/CO mixture was simulated as the syngas. $H_2$/CO mixture ratios, fuel/air mixture velocities and equivalence ratios were used as major parameters on the flame stabilitym The role of the impinging plate on the flame stability was also examined. In addition, laminar burning velocities of the $H_2$/CO mixture were predicted numerically to understand the characteristics of the flame stability for the syngas. The increase in the H2 concentration into the syngas brings about the extension of the blowout limit and the reduction in the flashback limit in terms of the stable flame region. The impinging jet plate broadened the blowout limit but does not play important role in changing of the flashback limit. Finally, it was found that the stability region of the flame using the syngas, which is expressed in terms of the mixture velocity and the equivalence ratio in this study, significantly differed from that of $CH_4$.

  • This study evaluated the toxicity of the burning gas from the synthetic wood products used in housings or warehouses. The combustion products of five materials, viz. impregnated laminated board, MDF, Douglas fir plywood, core plywood, and Lauan retardant, were analyzed using SEM, FTIR and a Cone Calorimeter. For the Lauan retardant, 256,965 ppm of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and 1,475 ppm of sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) were measured, which are 2.5 times and 3.6 times as high as their lethal concentrations of 100,000 ppm and 400 ppm, respectively. For the impregnated laminated board, 1,569 ppm of nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) was measured, which is 6 times as high as its lethal concentration of 250 ppm. For MDF, 795 ppm of ammonia ($NH_3$) was measured, which is higher than its lethal concentration of 750 ppm. As a result, most internal-finishes generated toxic combustion products at levels higher than their lethal concentrations, which underlines the importance of the selection and manufacturing of internal-finish materials.

  • This study was conducted to investigate on the combustion characteristic with the effects of mat thickness and fuel kinds in a metal-fiber burner. The mode transition point is confirmed by the K value, which was defined as the rate of flow velocity and laminar burning velocity. The ($T^4_{sur}-T^4_{\infty}$) is highest at methane flame with 3 T thickness. Through the measurement of the unburned mixture temperature, the possibility of submerged flame in surface combustion burner was confirmed. The rapid emission of CO occurs nearby limit blow out (LBO) because of the increase of flow velocity. In case of NOx, the trend is similar with surface temperature. However, it also considered that the NOx emission is affected by residence time with flame position.

  • This paper describes on the flame stability and combustion instability of coal derived synthetic gas especially for gases of Buggenum IGCC in Netherlands and Taean IGCC in Korea. These combustion characteristics were observed by conducting ambient-pressure elevated-temperature combustion tests in GE7EA model combustor when varying heat input and nitrogen dilution ratio. Flame stability map is plotted according to the flame structure by dividing all regimes into six, and only regime I and II are identified to be stable. Both syngases of Taean and Buggenum with nitrogen integration corresponds to regime II in which syngas burnt stably and flame coupled with outer recirculation flow. Stable regime of Buggenum is larger than that of Taean when considering only $H_2$/CO ratio due to higher content of hydrogen. However, when considering nitrogen dilution, syngas of Taean is burnt more stably than that of Buggenum since more nitrogen in Buggenum has negative effect on the stability of flame.

  • Foam block, popularized as the self-interior goods, is susceptible to fire since the main material is the polyethylene flammable synthetic resin. However, it is widely used in homes, offices, and multi-use facilities. In order to understand the fire characteristics of the foam block, two kinds of foam blocks sold in the market (non-fire retardant and fire retardant) were evaluated according to standard of KS F 5660-1 (Reaction to fire test). In addition, the hazard analysis of the gas generated by the combustion of the specimen was performed using the FTIR gas analyzer. The cone calorimeter test showed that the ignition and flame combustion of both two specimens were burned as soon as the radiant heat blocking device was removed, and it was confirmed that the flame could become a rapid propagation factor during the fire. The analysis of the combustion gas through the FTIR gas analyzer showed that both the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide classified as the common combustion gases and the acrolein, ammonia, and hydrogen cyanide causing serious damage to the human body were detected substantially. This study showed that a foam block product has high ignitionability and generates toxic gases. Hence, it is urgently required to establish the standards used for properly classifying the combustion characteristics of the material on the basis of the use conditions of a foam block product and to prepare the standards on the purpose of use.

  • The misuse of anabolic androgenic steroids is of particular concern in sports and society. Thus, it is of great importance to discriminate endogenous steroids such as testosterone or testosterone prohormones from their chemically identical synthetic copies. In this study, gas chromatography-combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometric (GC-C/IRMS) method has been developed and validated for discriminating the origin of anabolic androgenic steroids. The method involves the solid-phase extraction, enzymatic hydrolysis with ${\beta}$-glucuronidase, HPLC-fractionation for the cleanup and analysis by GC-C/IRMS. The difference(${\Delta}^{13}C$) of urinary ${\delta}^{13}C$ values between synthetic analogues and endogenous reference compounds (ERC) by GC-C/IRMS was used to elucidate the origin of steroids, and intra- and inter-day precision, specificity and isotope fractionation were evaluated. The present GC-C/IRMS method combined with HPLC cleanup was accurate and reproducible enough to be successfully applied to the test of urine sample from suspected anabolic steroid abusers.

  • The gasification of biomass, sawdust, was carried out in order to investigate gasification characteristics. The experiment was performed using a down-draft fixed bed gasifier to surpass tar components generation in the gasification process. In the experiments, we investigated synthetic gas composition by varying reaction temperature, steam/carbon ratio, and excess ratio (ER), respectively. Higher reaction temperature, $700^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$, could obtain higher $H_2$ yield. However, we could not obtain any meaning data by varying S/C ratio. Using $O_2$-LNG burner in the top of the gasifier may surpass water-gas shift reaction by increasing $CO_2$ concentration from the LNG-$O_2$ combustion reaction.
