The coal is a useful industrial resource for a long time. However, coal waste is generated by the mining process. Coal wastes are the main cause of pollution in the surrounding environment, and the amount of coal waste is set at hundreds of millions of tons. Significant amounts of these components in the coal waste are $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$, which is also the main source of zeolites useful in various industries. This study is that the synthesis-zeolite was prepared from coal waste and properties and adsorption performance of synthesis-zeolite were compared with commercial zeolite. The synthesis-zeolite is showed similar properties to the commercial zeolite and also showed excellent adsorption performance against atmospheric pollution induced gases ($CO_2$, Toluene, $SO_2$, etc).
To find a recycling method for waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel glasses, we investigated the synthesis process of zeolite with an ion exchange ability by hydrothermal reaction using waste LCD panel glass as a raw material. It was shown that the waste LCD panel glass can be used as a raw material for the production of zeolites having the ion exchange ability. Following conditions for the synthesis of the zeolite with an ion exchange ability were required : the molar ratio of Si to Al components of the waste LCD glass needs to be 2.0 to 2.8, and the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 12 hours are needed for the hydrothermal reaction. Based on the required conditions previously mentioned, the A type zeolite was synthesized when the molar ratio of the Si to Al component was 2.0, and the P type zeolite was produced when the molar ratio was 2.8. The type A zeolite synthesized by using the waste LCD panel glass showed a good ion exchange ability and heavy metal adsorption ability. Also, an excellent ion exchange capacity was observed as the crystal phase grows stably in a cubic phase.
The sewage treatment sludge disposal has become a serious environmental problem because of restricted direct land-filling and oceandumping in spite of their large amounts discharged. So the recycling of sewage treatment sludge is very useful alternative for waste management. Here, we studied the feasibility of zeolite synthesis in open system from the sewage treatment sludge incinerator fly ash by means of hydrothermal synthesis. We considered the concentration of NaOH, reaction time, reaction temperature and reaction step as synthesis variables. The phase of zeolite products was identified by X-ray diffractometer(XRD) and ammonium ion exchange test was performed for the raw fly ash and two zeolite products(Z-3 and Z-5). In leaching test of the raw fly ash, hazard metal is detected very low level compared with regulatory leaching test standard. But in total recoverable test, the total contents of the fly ash were very high in terms of the standard for waste-derived fertilizer. Through hydrothermal reaction, small amount of zeolite P was synthesied in 1 N of NaOH solution and relatively large amount of hydroxysodalite was synthesied in 3 N and 5 N of NaOH solution with similar peak intensity. Addition of an aging step in the synthesis didn't increase the amount of zeolite phase. Maximum $NE_4^+-N$ exchange capacity is 1.49 mg $NH_4^+-N/g$ in Z-3 and 1.38 mg $NH_4^+-N/g$ in Z-5. Most of the ammonium ion is exchanged in 30 minutes and disorption did not occur until 5 hours.

In this study, zeolite was synthesized by hydrothermal, fusion, and fusion/hydrothermal methods with fly ash, coal fly ash, and a waste catalyst discharged from thermal power plants and incinerator in Ulsan area. Coal fly ashes (CFAs) and a waste catalyst containing amounts of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ ranging from 60.29 to 89.62 wt%. CFAs were mainly composed of quartz and mullite which were assayed by a XRD pattern. Zeolite could be synthesized by CFAs and the waste catalyst when all methods were used. Na-A zeolite (Z-C1, Z-C2, and Z-W5) are mainly synthesized by the fusion method from CFAs and the waste catalyst. Z-C1 and Z-C2 formed by-products, calcite peaks, which is caused by the content of CaO in CFAs and the addition of $Na_2CO_3$ for a synthetic process.

This study is about zeolite synthesis from the sewage sludge incinerator fly ash of "S" sewage treatment center located in Seoul. For this purpose, the properties of raw fly ash as starting material, the hydrothermal conditions for zeolite synthesis and the environmental applicabilities of synthesized zeolites were examined. Fly ash from sewage sludge incinerator has large quantities of SiO$_2$ and Al$_2$O$_3$ and their contents are 42.8 wt.% and 21.2 wt.% respectively. So fly ash is considered to be possible starting material for zeolite synthesis. The results from leaching test of fly ash showed that the concentration of hazardous metals were very low as compared with the Korea leaching standard of the Waste Management Law. But the concentration from total recoverable test of fly ash were higher than the fertilizer standard of Fertilizer Management Law. Major zeolite products synthesized by hydrothermal reaction are analcime in teflon vessel and zeolite P1 in borosilicate flask. Optimum conditions for the synthesis of analcime were 1 N of NaOH concentration, 16 hour of reaction time and 135$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature. For the zeolite P1 formation, the proper conditions were demonstrated to be 5 N of NaOH concentration, 16 hour reaction time and 130$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature in this study. Hazardous metal contents in the analcime product are similar with those in raw fly ash. In case of the zeolite P1, the contents are reduced to nearly a half. Raw fly ash and the analcime product showed NH$_4{^+}$ ion exchange capacity of 0$\sim$1.0 mg of NH$_4{^+}$g$^{-1}$ and 3.0$\sim$7.4 mg of NH$_4{^+}$g$^{-1}$, respectively. However, the zeolite P1 product reached exchange capacity to 14.6$\sim$17.8 mg of NH$_4{^+}$g$^{-1}$. This values are in the range of those of natural clinoptilolite and phillipsite. From this point of view, zeolite synthesis from sewage treatment sludge incinerator fly ash is a good alternative for solid waste recycling.
A study on the synthesis of zeolite from coal fly ash from power plant was carried out to reduce environmental problems and reuse industrial waste. The synthesized zeolite was proved to be Zeolite 4A type by means of the XRD and SEM analysis, and then the synthesized zeolite was used as an absorbent to remove the $NH_4^+$ ions in the wastewater and water. In the ion exchange of single $NH_4^+$ ions by the natural zeolite and the synthesized zeolite, the ion exchange reached equilibrium within 10 min. and 1hr, respectively. The amount of ion exchanged $NH_4^+$ to the unit weight of natural zeolite and zeolite 4A were 1.09 and 3.54 meq/g respectively, and the amount of $NH_4$ ion exchanged by the synthesized zeolite was higher than by the natural zeolite. The ion exchange kinetics fitted very well to the Feundlich and Langmuir isotherm. The effects of coexisting cations on the ion-exchange properties of zeolites were studied in order to apply them to water treatment. In the bisolute-system of the $NH_4^+-K^+$ and $NH_4^+-Na^+$ systems, the ion exchange capacity was smaller than the single $NH_4^+$ ion system. The effects of coexisting cations on the ion exchange system by the natural zeolite and the synthesized zeolite were found to be $K^+>Na^+$ and $Na^+>K^+>>Mg^{2+}>Ca^{2+}$, respectively.
This study was conducted to develop n convenient and efficient granular type absorbent with high CEC from powdery zeolite, which is a waste produced while crushing the natural zeolite of Korea to get a particular particle size. The change of mineralogical characteristics during hydrothermal alternation of natural zeolite to Na-P zeolite in alkaline solution at various reaction times was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and total elemental analysis. The columnar aggregate of Na-P Zeolite was produced by calcinating the natural zeolite-charcoal extrudates of about 3 mm diameter. In 24 hours reaction, clinoptillonite, mordenite and feldspar in natural zeolite were disappeared by 3 N NaOH treatment, while Na-P Zeolite with spherical granular structure was newly detected by XRD. As increasing reaction time, Si/Al ratio in remaining solution was deceased. The CEC of the synthesized material increased more than 2 times compared with that of natural zeolite, although the diameter of Na-P zeolite were rather increased.
This study was performed to examine the effects of aluminum addition and recycle of NaOH waste solution on CEC and crystallinity of zeolite synthesized from fly ash. The added aluminum was used as the source of zeolite framework in zeolitization of fly ash. CEC and crystallinity of Na-P1 zeolite synthesized with aluminum addition were increased from 285 to $365cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ and from 44.3 to 57.1% compared to that of simple hydrothermal treatment, respectively. The recycled NaOH solution did not affect the CEC of reaction products, though the crystallinity was decreased a little. Therefore, the additional supply of aluminum could improve the quality of zeolite synthesized from fly ash and the recycle of NaOH during zeolite synthesis can save the chemical without any adverse effects in the quality of synthesized seolite.

This study introduces a NaOH/Zn-assisted hydrothermal method for the synthesis of zeolites derived from coal ash (CA). A zeolite/Zn adsorbent is successfully prepared by the activation of CA with NaOH and Zn; it is characterized by a high surface area and a negative surface charge.Methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) are selected as dye pollutants, and their adsorption onto the zeolite/Zn adsorbent is investigated. Results show the high adsorption capacities of MB and MO and that the negative surface charge facilitates electrostatic interactions between the adsorbates and adsorbents. The zeolite/Zn adsorbents shows the selective adsorption of positively charged dye MB via electrostatic interactions between the =NH+ group (positive dipole) and the oxygen functional group of the adsorbents (negative dipole). The selectivity for the positively charged dye is sufficiently high, with the removal efficiency reaching 99.41% within 10 min. By contrast, the negatively charged dye MO exhibits negligible absorption. These findings confirm the role of electrostatic interactions in the adsorption of MB, in addition to the effect of a large surface area. The results of this study are expected to facilitate the development of simple, eco-friendly, and cost-effective zeolite-based adsorptive composites from CA residuals for the selective removal of dye pollutants from CA waste.
The feasibility of commercializing the hydrothermal synthesis of Na-A type zeolite from siliceous mudstone has been conducted using a 50-liter bench-scale autoclave and the application of the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent. Siliceous mudstone, which is widely distributed around the Pohang area, was adopted as a precursor. The siliceous mudstone is favorable for the synthesis of zeolite because it contains 70.7% $SiO_2$ and 10.0% $Al_2O_3$, which are major ingredient of zeolite formation. The synthesis of zeolite was carried out under the following conditions that had been obtained from the previous laboratory-scale tests: 10hr reaction time, $80^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature, $Na_2O/SiO_2$ ratio = 0.6, $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio = 2.0 and $H_2O/Na_2O$ ratio= 98.6. The crystallinity and morphology of the zeolite formed were similar to those obtained from the laboratory-scale tests. The recovery and cation exchange ion capacity were 95% and 215 cmol/kg, respectively, which are slightly higher than those obtained in laboratory scale tests. To examine the feasibility of the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent, experiments for heavy metal adsorption to zeolite were conducted. Its removal efficiencies of heavy metals in simulated waste solutions decreased in the following sequences: Pb > Cd > Cu = Zn > Mn. In a solution of 1500 mg/L total impurity metals, the removal efficiencies for these impurity metals were near completion (> 99%) except for Mn whose efficiency was 98%. Therefore, the synthetic Na-A type zeolite was proven to be a strong absorbent effective for removing heavy metals.
