  • Dynamic textures are videos that exhibit a stationary property with respect to time (i.e., they have patterns that repeat themselves over a large number of frames). These patterns can easily be tracked by a linear dynamic system. In this paper, a model that identifies the underlying linear dynamic system using wavelet coefficients, rather than a raw sequence, is proposed. Content based threshold filtering based on Set Partitioning in a Hierarchical Tree (SPIHT) helps to get another representation of the same frames that only have low frequency components. The main idea of this paper is to apply SPIHT based threshold filtering on different bands of wavelet transform so as to have more significant information in fewer parameters for singular value decomposition (SVD). In this case, more flexibility is given for the component selection, as SVD is independently applied to the different bands of frames of a dynamic texture. To minimize the time complexity, the proposed model is implemented on a graphics processing unit (GPU). Test results show that the proposed dynamic system, along with a discrete wavelet and SPIHT, achieve a highly compact model with better visual quality, than the available LDS, Fourier descriptor model, and higher-order SVD (HOSVD).

  • A high resolution spectroscopic observation of the red supergiant star RM_1-390 in the Large Magellanic Cloud was made from a 3.6 m telescope at the European Southern Observatory. Spectral resolving power was R=20,000, with a signal-to-noise ratio S/N > 100. We found the atmospheric parameters of RM_1-390 to be as follows: the effective temperature $T_{eff}=4,250{\pm}50K$, the surface gravity ${\log}\;g=0.16{\pm}0.1$, the microturbulent velocity $v_{micro}=2.5km/s$, the macroturbulence velocity $v_{macro}=9km/s$ and the iron abundance $[Fe/H]=-0.73{\pm}0.11$. The abundances of 18 chemical elements from silicon to thorium in the atmosphere of RM_1-390 were found using the spectrum synthesis method. The relative deficiencies of all elements are close to that of iron. The fit of abundance pattern by the solar system distribution of r- and s-element isotopes shows the importance of the s-process. The plot of relative abundances as a function of second ionization potentials of corresponding chemical elements allows us to find a possibility of convective energy transport in the photosphere of RM_1-390.

  • In the sigma filter, there is a specialized neighbours distribution scheme in which the sigma value is computed from local statistics. It is designed to modify a standard average filter to preserve edges. However this filter is vulnerable to details-enhancement and conventional sigma approaches have been focused on denoising, not enhancing the characteristic area. This paper proposes an adaptive image enhancement algorithm using local statistics and functional synthesis which are utilized for adaptive realization of the enhancement, so that not only image noise may be smoothed but also details may be enhanced. For the local adaptation, parameters are estimated and weighted at each moving window that satisfy the criteria. The experimental results illuminates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The effect of process parameter of plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) on the variation of the ratio between cubic boron nitride (c-BN) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in the film was in-vestigated. The plasma was generated by electric power with the frequency between 100 and 500 KHz. BCl3 and NH3 were used as a boron and nitrogen source respectively and Ar and hydrogen were added as a car-rier gas. Films were composed of h-BN and c-BN and its ratio varied with the magnitude of process parameters, voltage of the electric power, substrate bias voltage, reaction pressure, gas composition, sub-strate temperature. TEM observation showed that h-BN phase was amorphous while crystalline c-BN par-ticle was imbedded in h-BN matrix in the case of c-BN and h-BN mixed film.

  • $BaTiO_3$ fine particles were prepared by hydrothermal process from titanium tetra-isoproproxide ($Ti(OiPr)_4$) and barium hexa-hydroxide ($Ba(OH)_2{cdot}8H_2O$) as raw materials. The fine particles were obtained at the temperature range of 160 to $185^{\circ}C$. The properties of $BaTiO_3$ particles were studied as a function of various parameters such as reaction temperature, reaction time and Ba/Ti ratio, etc. The average particle size of $BaTiO_3$ increased with increasing reaction temperature and time. After hydrothermal treatment at $170^{\circ}C$ for 8 h, the average particle size of $BaTiO_3$ was about 30 nm and the particle size distribution was narrow.

  • Automatic image completion techniques have difficulty processing images in which the target region has multiple planes or is non-facade. Here, we propose a new image completion method that uses belief propagation based on planar priorities. We first calculate planar information, which includes planar projection parameters, plane segments, and repetitive regularity extractions within the plane. Next, we convert this planar information into planar guide knowledge using the prior probabilities of patch transforms and offsets. Using the energy of the discrete Markov Random Field (MRF), we then define an objective function for image completion that uses the planar guide knowledge. Finally, in order to effectively optimize the MRF, we propose a new optimization scheme, termed Planar Priority-belief propagation that includes message-scheduling-based planar priority and dynamic label cropping. The results of experiment show that our approach exhibits advanced performance compared with existing approaches.

  • This paper focuses on the modeling and intelligent control of the new Eight-Rotor MAV, which is used to solve the problem of the low coefficient proportion between lift and gravity for the Quadrotor MAV. The Eight-Rotor MAV is a nonlinear plant, so that it is difficult to obtain stable control, due to uncertainties. The purpose of this paper is to propose a robust, stable attitude control strategy for the Eight-Rotor MAV, to accommodate system uncertainties, variations, and external disturbances. First, an interval type-II fuzzy neural network is employed to approximate the nonlinearity function and uncertainty functions in the dynamic model of the Eight-Rotor MAV. Then, the parameters of the interval type-II fuzzy neural network and gain of sliding mode control can be tuned on-line by adaptive laws based on the Lyapunov synthesis approach, and the Lyapunov stability theorem has been used to testify the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. The validity of the proposed control method has been verified in the Eight-Rotor MAV through real-time experiments. The experimental results show that the performance of the interval type-II fuzzy neural network based adaptive sliding mode controller could guarantee the Eight-Rotor MAV control system good performances under uncertainties, variations, and external disturbances. This controller is significantly improved, compared with the conventional adaptive sliding mode controller, and the type-I fuzzy neural network based sliding mode controller.

  • This study deals with the TE (Transmission Error) of gear tooth by modifying a profile and lead of a surface of tooth. First, we experimentally confirmed that the TE is a synthesis of the sliding velocity between both gears. Since various types of TE appear in the experiments, we introduced definition of transmission error and the optimism design by modifying a surface parameters. The test stand's performance is then evaluated through a series of multiple torque transmission error tests. Comparisons are made between data recorded before and after the test stand's redesign, and subsequently repeatability studies are performed to verify the veracity of the measured data. Finally, the experimental results are compared to the analytical predictions of two different gear analysis programs.

  • The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is a device for the conversion of visible light into electricity, based on the sensitization of wide bandgap semiconductors. The performance of the cell mainly depends on a dye used as sensitizer. The absorption spectrum of the dye and the anchorage of the dye to the surface of TiO2 are important parameters determining the efficiency of the cell. Generally, transition metal coordination compounds(ruthenium polypyridyl complexes) are used as the effective sensitizers, due to their intense charge-transfer absorption in the whole visible range and highly efficient metal-to ligand charge transfer. However, ruthenium polypyridyl complexes contain a heavy metal, which is undesirable from point of view of the environmental aspects. Moreover, the process to synthesize the complexes is complicated and costly. Alternatively, organic dyes can be used for the same purpose with an acceptable efficiency. The advantages of organic dyes include their availability and low cost. We designed and synthesized a series of organic sensitizers containing long wavelength absorption-chromophores for the dye sensitized solar cell. The DSSC composed of Blue-chromophores for the sensitization absorbed long wavelength region which is different also applied into the dye-cocktail (mixing) system. The photovoltaic property of DSSCs organic long wavelength absorption-chromophores were measured and evaluated by comparison with that of individual chromophores.

  • Purpose: When deciding a treatment plan in diabetic foot ulcer patients, predicting a possibility of healing wounds is important since not a few patients have poor general condition to get successful wound healing. This study was planned to find out if a serum collagen level can be used as a predictor for healing wounds in diabetic foot patients. Methods: Fifty-seven patients, who visited our clinic from January to June, 2007 for treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, were included in this study. Serum levels of type I collagen were checked using carboxy terminal type I propeptide kits. Simultaneously serum levels of vitamin C and iron, cofactors of collagen synthesis, were checked. The patients were divided into two groups; a group of successfully healed wounds and the other of unhealed wounds. Serum levels of the parameters were compared between the 2 groups. Results: The serum level of collagen was $197.65{\pm}86.26ng/ml$ in a healed group and $87.91{\pm}28.76ng/ml$ in the unhealed group(p<0.05). The serum iron and vitamin C levels were did not show significant differences. Conclusion: The serum collagen level may predict healing or nonhealing wounds in diabetic foot ulcers.
