  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to report significant improvement of peripheral coldness in patient, who was diagnosed with 'Soyangin Chest-heat symptomatic pattern' and applied medication based on Sasang Constitutonal medicine. Methods The patient was treated with herbal medications, according to his own symptomatology. The objective outcome was measured by thermography and the subjective sensation was assessed by using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Results The symptoms of peripheral coldness improved remarkedly without any side effects. Accessory symptoms and original symptoms also changed for the better. Conclusions This results show that it is available that peripheral coldness is treated with herbal medications according to Sasang Constitutional medicine, especially ingenious in terms of the fact that some patient can be diagnosed with heat-based condition on the basis of original symptoms, although his/her chief complaint is classified as cold pattern.

  • Yellow spot or blotch symptoms on the upper surface of leaf, without the production of velvet-like fungi on the lower surface of leaf as in the gray mold of tomato caused by Cladosporium fulvum, were observed in tomato (cv. Seokwang) plants in May, 1995, in a vinyl-house of the experimental plot of Gyeongnam Provincial Rural Development Administration, Chinju, Gyeongnam, Korea. We identified this disease as powdery mildew of tomato caused by Oidiopsis taurica (L v.) Arnaud (=Leveillula taurica), which was new to Korea. Conidia of the fungus were borne on uni- or bi-septated conidiophores which were developed through the stomata of the tomato leaf. The conidia were slender, clavate and variable in size (31~111.6$\times$13.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). The fungal conidia isolated from tomato leaves were inoculated to tomato plants, and the occurrence of the same disease was confirmed based on the symptomatology and the morphology of the pathogen reisolated.

  • Anomalous origin of the coronary artery from the pulmonary artery is a rare congenital coronary artery disease and the origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery represents the commonest form of these unusual lesions. Because of differences in symptomatology, clinical course and prognosis, this malformation has been divided into infant type[Bl-and-White-Garland syndrome] and adult type on the basis of the absence or presence of collateral circulation between the right and left coronary artery. The latter type has been reported relatively few cases. A 21-year-old male was admitted to the Yeungnam University Hospital, due to study of incidentally noticed heart murmur. At that time he was asymptomatic and past medical history was noncontributory. Chest roentgenogram was within normal limit and electrocardiogram was consistent with hypertrophy of left ventricle. Echocardiogram and aortogram demonstrated markedly dilated and tortuous right coronary artery and anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery. To prevent arteriosclerosis, progressive myocardial infarction, infection and aneurysmal rupture, Takeuchi operation which establish a two coronary system by transpulmonary arterial reconnection of the anomalous left coronary artery was done. Postoperative course was uneventful.

  • Forty-eight patients with significant left main coronary artery obstruction underwent coronary artery bypass graft between September,1989 and September,1993. They consisted of 29 males and 19 females with the mean age of 58 [range 33 - 78 . Seventeen patients[35% had stenosis in left main coronary artery only and twenty-nine[61% had associated lesions in other coronary artery systems as well.Two[4% had isolated left coronary ostial lesion. The operative mortality was 4.17% [2/48 which is comparable to the mortality of overall coronary artery bypass surgery cases during the same period[p >0.05 . Perioperative myocardial infarction was occurred in two patients[4.17% . And the infarction rates between the two groups also showed no difference[p >0.05 . The forty-six survivors showed significant improvement in exercise tolerance as well as symptomatology. We conclude that surgery for left main coronary artery disease can be done with no increased risk through careful anesthesia, surgery, and aggressive postoperative care in the critical period.

  • During routine surveys for pest and pathogen incidences at a golf course in 2007, circular to irregular patches of stunted, chlorotic and wilted turfgrass var. Pencross were noticed in Jinhae, Gyeongnam province, Korea. Soil samples collected from those diseased patches of the golf course yielded high population (average 126 nematodes/$100\;cm^3$) of a stunt nematode, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni, which is described and illustrated in this paper with light and scanning electron micrographs. This is the first report on the occurrence of T. claytoni in turfgrass in Korea.

  • The concept of Chiari malformations emerged toward the end of $19^{th}$ century from Chiari's initial descriptions of "alterations in the cerebellum resulting from cerebral hydrocephalus." In 1891, Hans Chiari(1851-1916) suggested cerebellar ectopia in which he classified Type I as "elongation of the tonsils and medial parts of the inferior lobes of the cerebellum into cone-shaped projections, which accompany the medulla oblongata into the spinal canal. The incidence of Chiari malformation has been found to be between 0.56% and 0.77% on MR imaging studies, as well as 0.62% in brain dissection studies. the definition of the adult Chiari malformation has varied with the evolution of neurodiagnositic capabilities and knowledge of physiopathology. This disorder can be associated with significant symptomatology, risk of secondary injury due to trauma, and the risk of progression and damage of the spinal cord due to associated Syringomyelia. Syringomyelia is found in 50 to 70% of Chiari I malformation. It is the clinical judgment of the physicians evaluating this disorder that is of the importance to avoid the therapeutic extremes of pursuing unnecessary surgery or withholding necessary treatment from patients.

  • Objective : Lumbar foraminal stenosis is an important etiology of lumbar radicular symptomatology and frequent causes of remained symptoms after decompressive surgery. This study was conducted to determine the precise clinical and radiologic diagnosis of lumbar foraminal stenosis, and to demonstrate thorough treatment by decompressive surgery using a minimally invasive technique. Methods : Seven patients with established unilateral lumbar foraminal stenosis according to clinical and radiologic diagnosis were retrospectively studied. All patients underwent combined interlaminar and paraisthmic procedure with partial facetectomy. The outcome of surgery was evaluated and classified into excellent, good, fair and poor. Results : The results were excellent in four patients, good in two, and fair in one during the follow-up. There were no surgery-related complications. Conclusion : Minimally invasive combined interlaminar and paraisthmic approach provides good outcome in carefully selected patients with symptomatic lumbar foraminal stenosis.

  • Leaf blight symptoms and abnormal defoliation were found on Stachys riederi var. japonica, a medicinal plant, grown at Hongcheon, Gangwon province, Korea in 2007. A foliar nematode, Aphelenchoides fragariae was isolated from infected leaf tissues. The symptoms observed on host plant were leaf blotching, discoloration and browning of tissues, tan-colored interveinal necrotic lesions and large dead patches of necrotic tissues. This is the first report of A. fragariae occurring on S. riederi var. japonica.
