LOW RANK ORTHOGONAL BUNDLES AND QUADRIC FIBRATIONS

  • Let C be a curve and V → C an orthogonal vector bundle of rank r. For r ≤ 6, the structure of V can be described using tensor, symmetric and exterior products of bundles of lower rank, essentially due to the existence of exceptional isomorphisms between Spin(r, ℂ) and other groups for these r. We analyze these structures in detail, and in particular use them to describe moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles. Furthermore, the locus of isotropic vectors in V defines a quadric subfibration QV ⊂ ℙV . Using familiar results on quadrics of low dimension, we exhibit isomorphisms between isotropic Quot schemes of V and certain ordinary Quot schemes of line subbundles. In particular, for r ≤ 6 this gives a method for enumerating the isotropic subbundles of maximal degree of a general V , when there are finitely many.

  • 상부맨틀이나 하부지각의 고전도층(HCL)에서 나타나는 고이방성은 MT 탐사에 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 고이방성 매질이 MT 반응에 미치는 영향을 고찰하기 위한 모델연구를 수행하였다. 각각의 균질한 암체의 전기적 성질은 대칭적인 전기전도도 텐서로 주어지며 모델링을 위한 기본방정식은 전기장과 자기장 성분이 결합되어진 주파수 영역 분산 방정식으로 주어진다. 이방성 매질에서는 전기장의 왜곡에 의해 항상 4성분의 임피던스가 존재하며, 2차원 구조에서는 대각선 성분, 특히 YY성분의 임피던스가 증가한다. 어떤 경우에는 서로 이방성 주향이 다른 매질의 상호작용에 의해 TM 모드의 위상이 90° 이상으로 증가하고 겉보기비저항이 낮아지는 현상이 발생한다. GB 분리법은 광역적인 반응을 추출하는데 이용될 수 있으나, 심부의 이방성의 영향을 크게 받는다. 이상의 모델연구의 결과를 BC87자료에 적용하여 현장자료에서의 이방성 효과를 고찰하였다.

Software development for the visualization of brain fiber tract by using 24-bit color coding in diffusion tensor image

  • Purpose: The purpose of paper is to implement software to visualize brain fiber tract using a 24-bit color coding scheme and to test its feasibility. Materials and Methods: MR imaging was performed on GE 1.5 T Signa scanner. For diffusion tensor image, we used a single shot spin-echo EPI sequence with 7 non-colinear pulsed-field gradient directions: (x, y, z):(1,1,0),(-1,1,0),(1,0,1),(-1,0,1),(0,1,1),(0,1,-1) and without diffusion gradient. B-factor was 500 sec/$\textrm{mm}^2$. Acquisition parameters are as follows: TUTE=10000ms/99ms, FOV=240mm, matrix=128${\times}$128, slice thickness/gap=6mm/0mm, total slice number=30. Subjects consisted of 10 normal young volunteers (age:21∼26 yrs, 5 men, 5 women). All DTI images were smoothed with Gaussian kernel with the FWHM of 2 pixels. Color coding schemes for visualization of directional information was as follows. HSV(Hue, Saturation, Value) color system is appropriate for assigning RGB(Red, Green, and Blue) value for every different directions because of its volumetric directional expression. Each of HSV are assigned due to (r,$\theta$,${\Phi}$) in spherical coordinate. HSV calculated by this way can be transformed into RGB color system by general HSV to RGB conversion formula. Symmetry schemes: It is natural to code the antipodal direction to be same color(antipodal symmetry). So even with no symmetry scheme, the antipodal symmetry must be included. With no symmetry scheme, we can assign every different colors for every different orientation.(H =${\Phi}$, S=2$\theta$/$\pi$, V=λw, where λw is anisotropy). But that may assign very discontinuous color even between adjacent yokels. On the other hand, Full symmetry or absolute value scheme includes symmetry for 180$^{\circ}$ rotation about xy-plane of color coordinate (rotational symmetry) and for both hemisphere (mirror symmetry). In absolute value scheme, each of RGB value can be expressed as follows. R=λw|Vx|, G=λw|Vy|, B=λw|Vz|, where (Vx, Vy, Vz) is eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue of diffusion tensor. With applying full symmetry or absolute value scheme, we can get more continuous color coding at the expense of coding same color for symmetric direction. For better visualization of fiber tract directions, Gamma and brightness correction had done. All of these implementations were done on the IDL 5.4 platform.

Progressive failure of symmetrically laminated plates under uni-axial compression

  • The objective of this work is to predict the failure loads, associated maximum transverse displacements, locations and the modes of failure, including the onset of delamination, of thin, flat, square symmetric laminates under the action of uni-axial compression. Two progressive failure analyses, one using Hashin criterion and the other using Tensor polynomial criteria, are used in conjunction with the finite element method. First order shear deformation theory and geometric nonlinearity in the von Karman sense have been employed. Five different types of lay-up sequence are considered for laminates with all edges simply supported. In addition, two boundary conditions, one with all edges fixed and other with mixed boundary conditions for $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$ quasi-isotropic laminate have also been considered to study the effect of boundary restraints on the failure loads and the corresponding modes of failure. A comparison of linear and nonlinear results is also made for $({\pm}45/0/90)_{2s}$ quasi-isotropic laminate. It is observed that the maximum difference between the failure loads predicted by various criteria depend strongly on the laminate lay-ups and the flexural boundary restraints. Laminates with clamped edges are found to be more susceptible to failure due to the transverse shear and delamination, while those with the simply supported edges undergo total collapse at a load slightly higher than the fiber failure load.

Dynamic instability analysis for S-FGM plates embedded in Pasternak elastic medium using the modified couple stress theory

  • The modified couple stress-based third-order shear deformation theory is presented for sigmoid functionally graded materials (S-FGM) plates. The advantage of the modified couple stress theory is the involvement of only one material length scale parameter which causes to create symmetric couple stress tensor and to use it more easily. Analytical solution for dynamic instability analysis of S-FGM plates on elastic medium is investigated. The present models contain two-constituent material variation through the plate thickness. The equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's energy principle. The governing equations are then written in the form of Mathieu-Hill equations and then Bolotin's method is employed to determine the instability regions. The boundaries of the instability regions are represented in the dynamic load and excitation frequency plane. It is assumed that the elastic medium is modeled as Pasternak elastic medium. The effects of static and dynamic load, power law index, material length scale parameter, side-to-thickness ratio, and elastic medium parameter have been discussed. The width of the instability region for an S-FGM plate decreases with the decrease of material length scale parameter. The study is relevant to the dynamic simulation of micro structures embedded in elastic medium subjected to intense compression and tension.
