  • Due to implementation of legislations for translation poor such as handicapped people, elderlies, children most public buildings are now integrating barrier free design methods. However, barrier free design is still considered as constraints of physical elements that only serve to meet functional aspects for minors and conflict with designs of the space. The authors believe that it is time that barrier free design is considered not as constraints but opportunities that both meet functional and aesthetical needs serving the growing population of transportation poor and others as well. This paper has looked into characteristics of transportation poor and barrier free design elements of passenger terminals and developed 4 categories of design methods. applied by using human sense, form, furniture, and architectural elements. Then the authors analyzed Gunsan International and coastal passenger terminal existing conditions which is considered to be designed to meet barrier free guidelines and legislations through the developed design categories and elements. The result turned out that the subject in regard of barrier free designs for transportation poor lack various applications such as forms that can be used as symbolic and directional elements that assists as wayfinding cues. Also, flexible and multi functional approaches in furniture arrangements, structural approaches are needed.

  • This study focuses on Gilbert Simondon's individuation theory, a core concept of his technological philosophy, and spatial modality in interactive space as the schema of interactive operation. The study examines spatial modality as the technology of an interaction-enabler that has archi-semiotic characteristics in the designed space by aspects of examples. They are based on ideas and properties of a combined environment and the concept of information, which form Simondon's individuation theory. In the process of technological individuation, spatial modality has the characteristics of archi-semiotics from a combined environment and information. The first of the three properties is representation through semiosis and the information surface. Second is the context by relation works and perception, and third are the symbolic aspects, which could create Placeness by meaning. Combining meaningful constructive and deconstructive spaces could result in space for interactive communication. Spatial modality makes it possible to interact with users and spaces. In fact, it could have a particular semiotic mode of address and become a semiotic and contextual base. As a basic investigation of spatial modality, this study will contribute to interactive space design research.

  • The contemporary consumer's fashion retail shops are becoming diverse in function and sensitivity while keeping in mind the effects of consumer's lifestyles according to changing fashions. Recently, external changes and expressive characteristics have become symbolic in retail fashion shops. This reinforces the importance of the skin, which is becoming image-sensitive and increasingly important. Therefore, this thesis will study the relationship between expressive tendency and skin in fashion retail shops by distinguishing the characteristics of a skin historically as well by categorizing the four brands from flagship stores which have introduced brand identity and an exceptional expressiveness of skin into types of form and space.

  • Dresses of the 1950s and 60s when the range and changes of fashion were wide and heavy were closely related with various styles of that time's architecture from the form, use of material, structure to the color. In this, study, characteristics of formalism and brutalism, main architectural streams of that period, such as line, structure, function, material, texture and color are analyzed in detail and these characteristics and those of dress are compared and analyzed to see if there are common aesthetic senses between them. It is particularly noteworthy that at that time formalistic architecture represented joy and abundance through enriched creation of appearance and flowing, symbolic linear beauty while the brutalistic produced young and vivid liveliness through functional, reasonable and moderate beauty, and this young and joyful atmosphere coincided exactly with frank, lively aesthetic senses of the young generation's fashion. Therefore, we can see common significance in the following fact ; architectural modes and fashion art of the 1950s and 60s were the result of more humane and enriched expressions from economical growth, and also product of that time's desire to adapt itself realistically to the rapid, complicated pop culture resulted from mass production.

  • Any theme of human being has its own goal, process, and means. In this respect, the subsystems of society comprises of ideology, norm and customs, and technology and economy. Similarly, culture has its subsystems like value, norm, and tool. These three cultural subsystems have relationships with design in terms of symbolic value, aesthetic form and functionality respectively. The society is now experiencing structural changes, getting out of industrial society md, accordingly, design is extending its scope to new domain out of the past physical concept. These changes are not just from design itself but they are from supra-system of design like changes of culture and society. In these respects, the study focuses on identifying the future direction of design education with the emphasis on the relationships between changes in design and society.

  • What is the "new paradigm"? It is impossible express it in one or two words, but if one had to; the closest might be the "holistic approach". The expression can be justified by the fact that the conclusions above lead to a greater intermixing of mathematics with engineering and natural sciences subjects, typically expressed in the form of examples of simplified real problems. They also lead to a greater intermixing of subjects within mathematics so that the courses should have less separation e.g. between symbolic and numerical mathematics. The conclusions also lead to the spreading the mathematics courses throughout all study years, not just the first two years. Of course, this should be done with great care in order to guarantee studies that are logically linked together. The new paradigm also means that the needs arising from industrial mathematics must be taken into account in the contents of engineering mathematics courses. Such topics are e.g. multivariate methods, statistics and use of mathematical software. What are we expected to gain from the paradigm shift? The primary benefit should be in obtaining more productive engineers equipped with a better degree of mathematical preparedness for engineering problems. But in addition, it should also promote more intensive use of applied mathematics and easier communication with professional mathematicians, often needed in complicated industrial problems.?Finally, it can be noted that the new paradigm is in harmony with the basic ideas of the CDIO (Conceive - Design - Implement - Operate) initiative for producing the next generation of engineers [1]. New ideas for engineering education can be found also in the homepage of SEFI (European Society for Engineering Education) [2].

  • The ship hull is accomplished by assembling various curved surfaces. There are numerous existing methods for ship hull processing, which need certain appropriate processing methods to enable it to be more efficient. The curved hull plates can be divided into convex region and saddle region. It is common to use line heating method to form a saddle region, when it comes to a convex region, it will be triangle heating method to be utilized. A precise analysis for curvature domain is required for the application of proper processing method. There exist various problems on existing calculation methods of curvature domain. Therefore, a more powerful method is demanded to it more accurately. In this study, a method called Dual Contouring is applied to extract curved surfaces, which is able to improve accuracy of extracted area. Based on all above, a best-suited heat processing method should be selected.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the aesthetic characteristics of modern fashion design use with a particular focus on transparency, and to help create future vision and feature. As part of the methodology for this study, I examined the concept of transparency, its characteristics and how it was expressed through art, architecture and other designs using literature research. Furthermore, I performed justifiable analysis on modern fashion design which used transparency from the 1990s till present. The following concepts were deciphered from information: Firstly, the concept of purity was highlighted. The emphasis here was to enhance the body's natural beauty with simple silhouettes that do not restrict its curves, using light materials such as clear vinyl, semi-clear materials or thin chiffon. Secondly, to express sensuality by exposing the body's curves with tight wrapping using clear materials, or with indirect and symbolic see-through techniques using contrasting clear, semi-clear and opaque materials. Thirdly, to express futurism through cyber and electronic images using high tech or shiny materials such as metal or holograms. Mechanical movements or effects of light are also used. Fourthly, to express playful characteristic by promoting surprises and disharmony that contradict with traditional techniques. This is carried out by intentionally exaggerating certain portions of clothes through disorder elements or confusion, and unsymmetrical shapes which destruct the human body's normal form.
