  • The purpose of this article is to examine the relationship between sin and grace represented in The Power and the Glory. This work is composed of two thriller patterns of the pursuer and the pursed. The first pursuit is that the whisky priest, the representative of religious order is pursued by the lieutenant, the representative of secular order. And the second pursuit is that the whisky priest is trying to escape from God. In the course of his flight from God the whisky priest discovers his sinful nature and this self-recognition helps him restore his proper relationship with God. When he was a young priest he had religious piety, but he didn't feel true love for others. Ironically, after he is corrupted he finds his sinful nature and regrets his wrong behavior. He then comes to understand God's will and his responsibility to have love for the miserable human beings. The whisky priest is willing to accept his destiny as a martyr, after having repented his sins to God. Though the lieutenant captures the whisky priest and executes him, he doesn't feel triumph or hope but feels empty. The Power and the Glory shows us the irony that the lieutenant's power is a symbol of his weakness, while the priest's weakness is a symbol of his power.

  • For every country, the flag is a major symbol that represents the country. Establishing image though the use of the country's symbol is more important for achieving national competitiveness in this global age. In Korea, Taekuki has not been actively applied to fashion products, however Korean people began to realize the Taekuki as a motif of fashion with 2002 World Cup. Thus, research on fashion product development applying Taekuki is needed. This research developed designs for fashion product development applying Taekuki. In addition, through suggesting various applied motives, this research explored the product possibility of global fashion design that represents Korean identity and fashion. For research method, after research on fashion design process, design development was progressed according to the 4-phases that comprehends processes previous researchers presented. First, in the problem recognition phase, background on the introduction of Taekuki to products and Taekuki fashion during 2002 World Cup was analyzed. Then, the need and possibility of fashion product development applying Taekuki's formative characteristics were found. Second, in research and analysis phase, meaning and history of Taekuki as well as flag fashion product developments in the U.S. and England examples were reviewed. Also, individual interviews with experts and consumers were conducted to collect qualitative data regarding product and design direction. Third, in idealization for problem solving phase, 62 designs including 43 apparels and 19 accessories were emerged. Finally, in evaluation phase, 40 university students majoring design evaluated designs' creativity, function, uniqueness, symbol, aesthetics, and harmony. Through this research, it is expected that fashion products applying Taekuki will be formly established as a fashion item. Furthermore, it is also expected that product development in other categories, brand planning, and product development using other national symbols such as name, anthem, and flower will be followed.

  • In pattern recognition and image analysis upplications, a graph is a useful tool for complex obect representation and recognition. However it takes much time to pair proper nodes between the prototype graph and an input data graph. Futhermore it is difficult to decide whether the two graphs in a class are the same hecause real images are degradd in general by noise and other distortions. In this paper we propose a matching algorithm using a matrix. The matrix is suiable for simple and easily understood representation and enables the ordering and matching process to be convenient due to its predefined matrix manipulation. The nodes which constitute a gaph are ordered in the matrix by their geometrical positions and this makes it possible to save much comparison time for finding proper node pairs. for the classification, we defined a distance measure thatreflects the symbo's structural aspect that is the sum of the mode distance and the relation distance; the fornet is from the parameters describing the node shapes, the latter from the relations with othes node in the matrix. We also introduced a subdivision operation to compensate node merging which is mainly due t the prepreocessing error. The proposed method is applied to the recognition of musteal symbols and the result is given. The result shows that almost all, except heavily degraded symbols are recognized, and the recognition rate is approximately 95 percent.

  • In this paper, we propose methods for improving the performance of word recognition system. The ray stratey of the first method is to apply the inertia to the feature vector sequences of speech signal to stabilize the transitions between VQ cdoes. The second method is generating the new observation probabilities using the transition matrix of VQ codes as weights at the observation probability of the output symbol, so as to take into account the time relation between neighboring frames in DHMM. By applying the inertia to the feature vector sequences, we can reduce the overlapping of probability distribution of the response paths for each word and stabilize state transitions in the HMM. By using the transition matrix of VQ codes as weights in conventional DHMM. we can divide the probability distribution of feature vectors more and more, and restrict the feature distribution to a suitable region so that the performance of recognition system can improve. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods, we carried out experiments for 50 DDD area names. As a result, the proposed methods improved the recognition rate by $4.2\%$ in the speaker-dependent test and $12.45\%$ in the speaker-independent test, respectively, compared with the conventional DHMM.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate an epistemological recognition of rural society. This study suggests an epistemological reorientation for rural society circumscribing diverse theoretical thoughts as well as empirical evidences. Traditional theoretical perspectives in urban-rural dichotomy envisioned by modernistic idea have regarded rural society as a premodern and underdeveloped society. The perspectives also have regarded city as a symbol of civilization and development. These perspectives thought of the function of rural society as a periphery that can survive as a back-up for urban-oriented prosperity. This study shows that these idea have been concentrated on agricultural expansionism and productivism which do not function in the post-modem societies my longer. The present study argues that these modernistic idea give little understanding of implicit value of rural society. Owing to the functional change of rural society which is quite omnipresent in the 21'st centuries in the world, the present study argues that the value of rural society should work even in the market society that has traditionally been regarded as an working-mechanism in urban society. The present study drives a new insight showing that rural renaissance is an explicit existence instead of a phenomenal one.

  • In this letter, we propose an efficient automatic modulation recognition (AMR) method which classifies digitally modulated signals by estimating the bandwidth. In AMR, feature-based methods are widely used and the accuracy of the features is highly dependent on the number of symbols and the number of samples per symbol (NSPS). In this letter, at first, we coarsely estimate the bandwidth of the oversampled signals, and then decrease the sample rate to yield adequate NSPS. As a result, more symbols are used for AMR and the correct classification rate becomes high under the same number of samples.

  • In this paper, we propose a robust pre-processing module for camera-based Optical Music Score Recognition (OMR) on mobile device. The captured images likely suffer for recognition from many distortions such as illumination, blur, low resolution, etc. Especially, the complex background music sheets recognition are difficult. Through any symbol recognition system, the staff line height and staff line space are used many times and have a big impact on recognition module. A robust and accurate staff line height and staff line space are essential. Some staff line height and staff line space are proposed for binary image. But in case of complex background music sheet image, the binarization results from common binarization algorithm are not satisfactory. It can cause incorrect staff line height and staff line space estimation. We propose a robust staff line height and staff line space estimation by using run-length encoding technique on edge image. Proposed method is composed of two steps, first step, we conducted the staff line height and staff line space estimation based on edge image using by Sobel operator on image blocks. Each column of edge image is encoded by run-length encoding algorithm Second step, we detect the staff line using by Stable Path algorithm and removal the staff line using by adaptive Line Track Height algorithm which is to track the staff lines positions. The result has shown that robust and accurate estimation is possible even in complex background cases.

  • Today, mobile phone is a necessity of modern life. For that reason, we suggest a particular system of a mobile phone which take a picture of music score image and automatically play it without any technical knowledges about the music score information. This experiment makes midi, acknowleging separate symbols via preprocessing to music score image taken. This paper utilizes 11 sorts of the score image taken by a mobile phone camera for this experiment. Through this method we suggest, as much as 98% on average takes place, which is very high recognizing ratio. Also, as we introduce this system in a mobile phone by porting, it takes 8.63 seconds on average to create midi following input of images.
