  • Voltage-dependent transmittance characteristics associated with various cell parameters have been studied in-plane switching liquid crystal display when both common and pixel electrodes are transparent. When both electrodes are opaque, the transmittance is related to only the distance (I) between electrodes. However, where transparent electrode is used, it is influenced not only the 1but also an electrode width (w) and rubbing angle. In addition, these factors are related to operating voltage which shows maximal transmittance. To maximize the light efficiency of the cell and obtain low operating voltage, the above-mentioned cell parameters need to be optimized.

  • The residual DC properties in the in-plane switching (IPS) liquid crystal displays(LCDs) which have different concentrations of cynao NLCs and different resistivities of fluorine NLCs were studied. We also propose a new residual DC measurement method, named 'light minimum/maximum method'. We confirmed the precision of residual DC measurement by light minimum/maximum method compared with the flicker minimizing method and found that new measurement method of residual DC is more accurate than that of the conventional flicker minimizing method since the resolution level of measurements is in 0.1V.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics of transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using in-plane switching mode. Unlike previous transflective LCD using a dual gap structure and multi driving circuit, this transflective LCD has a single gap structure and a single driving circuit. In the voltage on state, the electric field is applied horizontally to the LC directors, and then homogeneously aligned LC directors at initial state is rotated to with the electric field. But the twist angle of the LC directors in reflective area is lower than transmissive area. As a result, it is possible to design the transflective LCD with a single gap and a single driving circuit. The transflective display associated with this LC cell exhibits a wide viewing angle in both reflective and transmissive areas.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-doped homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) cells driven by in-plane field were fabricated and their electro-optic characteristics were investigated. Effective cell retardation values in an absence of an electric field between doped and undoped LC were the same each other. In the presence of an electric field, however, measured effective cell retardation value was smaller in the CNT-doped cell than in the undoped cell so that the transmittance was slightly smaller in the CNT-doped cell than in the undoped cell. In addition, the CNT-doped cell exhibited slight increase in driving voltage and decrease in response time compared to the undoped cell. The CNT effects on electro-optic characteristics of the cell were discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel electrode structure for superb transmittance in super in-plane switching (S-IPS) mode while keeping the features of the conventional SIPS mode such as the capability of initial LC alignment. The optimization of the electrode made it possible to enhance the light transmittance approximately by 14 % in comparison to the conventional S-IPS cell.

  • In the paper we have proposed a fabrication method for color reflective cholesteric LCD by an in-plane switching. By applying an in plane electric field, the cholesteric helix could be partially unwound, which lead to shift of selective reflection and exhibition of color change.

  • We propose a transflective In-Plane Switching mode in which patterned retarder is placed only on the reflective area of the upper substrate side. By selecting optic axes of Half Wavelength Plate and Liquid Crystal as 24 and 90 degree with respect to polarizer, condition of low reflectance for visible wavelength range at black state is found.

  • We propose a novel optical configuration for transmissive and reflective mode in the IPS LC cell to improve the viewing angle characteristics in a diagonal direction. The optical design was performed on a Poincar$\dot{e}$ sphere. From the calculation, we confirmed that the proposed configuration provides excellent viewing angle characteristics.

  • The switching fabric used to make high speed switching for packet transfer between input and output interface in recent internet environments. Without making any changes in order to remain ATM switching fabric, the existing structures should split/reassemble a packet to certain size, set aside cross-point buffer and will put loads on the system. In this paper, we proposed a new switch architecture, which has separated data memory plane and switching plane packet data will be stored on the separate memory structure and simultaneously only the part of the memory address pointers can pass the switching fabric. The small mini packets which have address pointer and basic information would be passed through the switching fabric. It is possible to achieve the remarkable switching performance than other switch fabrics with contending variable length packets.
