  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment capability by the IB(on bean) alignment method on a NDLC(Nitrogen Diamond Like Carbon) as a-C:H thin film, and investigated electro-optical performances of the IB aligned IPS(In plane switching}cell with NDLC surface. A good LC alignment by IB exposure on a NDLC surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the IB aligned IPS cell can be observed. The goodelectro-optical (EO) characteristics of the IB aligned IPS cell was observed with oblique IB exposure on the NDLC as a-C:H thin film for 1 min.

  • The inter-conversion between different control laws in flight has a lot of risk. The SWM(Switching Mechanism) including logic and stand-by mode is designed to analyze the transient response of aircraft during inter-conversion between different control laws, based on the in-house software for non-real-time and real-time simulation. The SWM applies the fader logic of TFS(Transient Free Switch) to minimize the transient response of an aircraft during the inter-conversion, and applies the reset '0' type of the stand-by mode to prevent surface saturation due to integrator effect in the disengaged flight control law. The transition time is also important to minimize the objectionable transient response in the inter-conversion, as well as the transition control law design. This paper addresses the results of non-real-time simulation for the characteristics of transient response to different transition time to select the adequate transient time, and the real-time pilot evaluation, using SSWM(Software Switching Mechanism) and HSWM(Hardware Switching Mechanism), which is met for Level 1 flying qualities and assures safety of flight.

  • In this paper, a robust controller is proposed to achieve an accurate tracking for an uncertain nonlinear plant with actuator dynamics. The extent of parameter uncertainty can be quantified by using linear parameterization technique. A switching controller is proposed to guarantee the global asymptotic stability of the plant. In order to eliminate the chattering caused by the switching controller, a smoothing controller is designed using the boundary layer technique around the sliding surface and guarantees the uniform ultimate boundedness of the tracking error.

  • We demonstrate an electro-optical device based on the flexoelectric effect of a short-pitched cholesteric liquid crystal. By using a dual-frequency switchable nematic, a small amount of chiral dopant and a small amount of phase-separated polymer localized on the surface, we were able to create a device that operates in amplitude (flexoelectric) and phase(dielectric) modes. At high frequency the dual frequency liquid crystal suppresses the phase mode at higher voltage, which improves the switching speed, and thereby preserving the in-plane-switching mode.

  • This paper deals with optimum design criteria for maximum torque density & minimum torque ripple of a Flux Switching Motor (FSM) using response surface methodology (RSM) & finite element method (FEM). The focus of this paper is to find a design solution through the comparison of torque density and torque ripple which vary with rotor shape. And then, a central composite design (CCD) mixed resolution was introduced and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the significance of the fitted regression model. The proposed procedure allows one to define the rotor dimensions, starting from an existing motor or a preliminary design.

  • This paper presents a design of the controller for vehicle lateral dynamics using active yaw moment. Vehicle lateral motion is incorporated with directional controllability and stability. These are conflicting each other from the view of vehicle handling performance. To compromise the trade-off between these two aspects, we suggest a new control algorithm based on the sliding mode with time-varying switching surface according to the body side slip angle. The controller can deal with the nonlinear region in vehicle driving condition and be robust to the parameter uncertainties in the plant model. Control performance is evaluated from the simulation for the vehicle of real parameters on the road with various tire-road frictions.

  • IgA is the predominant immunoglobulin isotype in mucosal secretions(1). It has been reported that a population of Peyer's patch T cells can selectively induce IgM bearing B cells to switch to surface IgA bearing B cells(2,3). Further, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-6 alone and in combination, can significantly influence murine IgA B cell differentiation in vitro(4-7). However, it remains an open question which cytokines have a major role in class switching to the IgA isotype. Recently, it has been reported that transforming growth factor .betha.1(TGF .betha.1) alone, or in combination with IL-2 increases IgA secretion by LPS-activated surface IgA negative (sIgA$\^$-/) murine spleen B cells while concurrently downregulating IgM and IgG secretion by such cells(8-11). In the present study, limiting dilution analysis was used to demonstrate, at the clonal level, that TGF .betha.1 has siginificant activity as an IgA isotype switch factor.

  • A novel sliding mode control with disturbance observer for position control of DC servo motor is presented. The conventional sliding mode controller changes the control structure depending on the state of switching surface and consequently, the control law is discontinuous and theoretically chatters at an infinite frequency. To overcome this problem in view of the practical implementation, the disturbance observer is used to compensate the effects of the parameter variations and the load disturvances. We can obtain the performance predetermined by the switching surface with continuous control law while the controlled system remains robust. The performance of the proposed controller with that of the conventional sliding mode controller through digital computer simulation and experiment.

  • This paper considers a method to design sliding mode observers for a class of uncertain systems using Linear Matrix Inequalities(LMI). In an LMI-based sliding mode observer design method for a class of uncertain systems the switching surface is set to be the difference between the observer and system output. In terms of LMIs, a necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the existence of a sliding-mode observer guaranteeing a stable sliding motion on the switching surface. The gain matrices of the sliding-mode observer are characterized using the solution of the LMI existence condition. The results are illustrated by an example.
