  • Sustaining of flame stability of the burner installed in Dielsel exhaust pipe is very difficult because of steep fluctuation of pressure and flow rate. A burner for DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) which clogged by collected soot regeneration has been made of metal fiber for the purpose of realization of flame stability even in unfavorable condition of Diesel engine exhaust. Flame stability of the metal fiber burner has been investigated in various condition of engine operation. It has been identified that metal fiber burner with liner which has swirl guide vane presents excellent flame stability even in the higher engine revolutions than 3000rpm and sudden variation. The results offer the possibility of development of full flow burner system for DPF regeneration.

  • The results of a series of experiments executed by using two pilot-scale oxy-fuel burners are presented. The oxy-fuel burners are designed for maximum capacity of 50,000kcal/hr, 200,000kcal/hr and installed in the test furnace. The effects of turn-down ratio, excess oxygen ratio, nozzle exit velocity, injection angle, and swirl vane angle on the combustion characteristic are investigated. Temperature distributions are measured using R-type and Molybdenum sheathed C-type thermocouple at various points of the flame. The results showed that maximum temperature and mean temperature increase with the increase of turn-down ratio and momentum. The maximum flame temperature was increased about 35% compared to the case of equivalent air operated condition. In addition, optimum burner type, excess oxygen ratio and nozzle characteristics are obtained for this oxy-fuel glass melting furnace.

  • This paper was studied to investigate and compare the effects of inclined baffle plate on the turbulent flow characteristics of a gun-type gas burner through X-Y plane and Y-Z plane respectively by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. For this purpose, two burner models with a cone-type baffle plate and a flat-type one respectively were used. The fast jet flow spurted from slits plays a role such as an air-curtain because it encircles rotational flow by swirl vanes and drives mixed main flow to axial direction regardless of the inclination of baffle plate. The inclined baffle plate causes axial mean velocity component and turbulent intensities etc. to be greatly concentrated towards the central part of a burner, and its effect especially appears in the range of about X/R=1.0-2.0. Also, it gives much larger size to axial mean velocity component and turbulent intensities etc formed near the slits in the range of X/R=1.4103. Especially the inclined baffle plate shifts more the Reynolds shear stress uw to the central region of a burner(Y/R=${\pm}$0.75) than the flat-type one, moreover it develops more strongly than uv.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate the effect of secondary venturi tip angle on flow and spray characteristics in gas turbine combustor with a swirl cup assembly. Three variations of secondary venturi tip angle are made: converging, straight and diverging angles. It is found that the variation of venturi tip angle results in the significant changes of flow and spray characteristics in gas turbine combustors, such as the size and location of recirculation zones. drop size and mass distribution affecting combustion efficiency and NOx emissions. In diverge case, central toroidal recirculation zone(CTRZ) exists near the exit, which is known to be beneficial for flame stability. But in converge case, the finest SMD distribution and uniform mass distribution are found and CTRZ is longer than other cases. Consequently, high combustion efficiency and low pollutant emission are expected in converge case.

  • This study investigated the swirling flow fields of a gun-type gas burner (GTGB) without a combustion chamber under cold flow conditions. Three velocity components and the static pressure were measured with a straight-type five-hole pressure probe (GHPP) using a non-nulling calibration method and compared with the results of an X-type hot-wire probe (X-probe) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The GHPP measured the velocity and static pressure for the swirling flow of the central region of the GTGB better than the X-probe but produced slightly worse results than the CFD.

  • Recently, gas turbines for power generation adopt multistage DLN(Dry Low NOx) type combustion, where diffusion combustion is applied at low load and, with increase in load, the combustion mode is changed to lean premixed combustion to reduce NOx emissive concentration. However, during the mode changeover from diffusion to premixed flame, unfavorable phenomena, such as flashback, high amplitude combustion oscillations, or thermal damage of combustor parts could frequently occur. In the present study, to apply for the analysis of such unfavorable phenomena, three-dimensional CFD investigations are carried out to compare the detailed flow characteristics and temperature distribution inside the gas turbine combustor before and after combustion mode changeover. The fuel considered here is pure methane gas. A standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function and a P-N type radiation heat transfer model, have been utilized. To analyze the complex geometric effects of combustor parts on combustion characteristics, fuel nozzles, a swirl vane f3r fuel-air mixing, and cooling air holes on the combustor liner wall, are included in this simulation.

  • The computational fluid dynamics was carried out to evaluate turbulent models on the swirling flow of a gun-type gas burner(GTGB) according to the mesh size. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used for a steady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional numerical analysis. In consequence, the velocity magnitude from the exit of a GTGB and the flowrate predicted by the turbulent models of MP k-${\varepsilon}$, Realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ and RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ agree with the results measured by an experiment very well. Moreover, the turbulent kinetic energy predicted by the turbulent model of standard k-${\varepsilon}$ with mesh type C only agrees with the experimental result very well along the radial distance. On the other hand, the detailed prediction of the information of swirling flow field near the exit of a GTGB at least needs a CFD analysis using a fairly large-sized mesh such as a mesh type C.

  • A uniflow cyclone has simple structure with a single channel in one direction. The one directional particle removal enables the uniflow cyclone to have compact size and low pressure drop. However, it has low collection efficiency compared to conventional cyclones. In this study, the effect of primary geometry on the performance of a uniflow cyclone with swirl vane is numerically investigated for the design of high performance uniflow cyclone. It is found that as the vortex finder diameter is increased, the pressure drop and the collection efficiency are decreased. Also, the same trend is predicted when the vortex finder height is increased. The best collection efficiency is predicted to be obtained when the vortex finder height is equal to the diameter of a cyclone. Reducing the body height by half will increase the pressure drop by 41%. When the body height is decreased, the collection efficiency is first increased and then decreased. The best collection efficiency is obtained when the body height is 4~5 times the cyclone diameter. Overall, the particle collection efficiency is highest when the Dν/D is equal to 0.3. But, the pressure drop is as high as 1592 Pa. Considering both collection efficiency and pressure drop, the best design is when Dν/D, Hν/D, and Hb/D are equal to 0.5, 1, and 5, respectively.
