  • In order to understand the laminar flow heat transfer enhancement by the swirl flow, the effects of heat transfer in a circular pipe with a twisted tape insert were investigated experimentally. In the present study, the uniform heat flux condition was considered. The laminar heat transfer correlations were developed using the least-square-fit from the surface temperature distribution of an electrically-heated pipe and flow property data. Average Nusselt number correlations with the twisted tape insert were expressed as a function of swirl parameter, Reynolds number and Prandtl number. In the case of the twisted ratio y = 6.05, the mean Nusselt number increased approximately 500% and the friction factor increased approximately 300%, compared to the case of the empty pipe, respectively.

  • Petroleum coke has high heating value and low price. Due to the steadily increasing demand for heavy oil processing, the production volume of petroleum coke tends to be expanded. The high availability and low price of petroleum coke have been strongly considered as candidate fuel for power generation facilities. However the high carbon content, high sulfur content and nitrogen content of petroleum fuel are known to produce relatively large quantity of CO2, high NOx and SO2 emission. In this work, a series of numerical simulations have been carried out in order to investigate the effects of swirl flow intensity on combustion furnace, which is most important operating condition. Results show that the temperature distribution was spatially uniform at about 1600K but high temperature region are located quite differently depending on swirl number. In addition, numerical temperature data was compared with experimental temperature data and its temperature difference shows less than 10%. On the other hand, discrepancy between numerical and experimental emission data were slightly large with necessities of improved emission model.

  • This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the supercritical mixing and combustion processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the extended k-e model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using generalized cubic equation of state. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent nonpremixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the effects of swirl number on flame structure of supercritical kerosene/LOx double swirl coaxial injector.

  • The supersonic swirl jet is being extensively used in many diverse fields of industrial processes since those lead to more improved performance, compared with the conventional supersonic no swirl jet. In the present study, an experiment is carried out to investigate the effect of annular swirl jet on the supersonic dual coaxial jet. A convergent-divergent nozzle with a design Mach number of 1.5 is used for the supersonic primary jet, and the sonic nozzles with four tangential inlets are used to make the secondary swirl jet. The primary jet pressure ratio is varied in the range from 3.0 to 7.0 and the outer annular jet pressure ratio is from 1.0 to 4.0. The interactions between the annular swirl and the inner supersonic jet are quantified by the pitot impact and static pressure measurements and visualized by using the Schlieren optical method. The results show that annular swirl jet alters the shock structure and impact pressure distributions compared with no swirl jet.

  • The effect of swirl flow structures on combustion dynamics of two interacting, lean-premixed flames was experimentally investigated, with a particular emphasis on swirl numbers and swirl rotational directions. Our results show that the amplitude of limit cycle oscillations is very sensitive to the combination of swirl numbers and rotational directions, while the instability frequency remains nearly unchanged. The counter-rotating cases show significantly lower pressure perturbations, and this behavior appears to be related to the formation of compact interacting zone with higher heat release rate, indicating the presence of increased flame surface wrinkling caused by intense turbulence.

  • The heat transfer characteristics off swirling air jet impinging on a heated flat plate have been investigated experimentally. The main object is to enhance the heat transfer rate by increasing turbulence intensity of impinging jet with a specially designed swirl generator. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of swirling jet were measured using a hot-wire anemomety. The temperature distribution on the heated flat surface was measured with thermocouples. As a result the swirl effect on the local heat transfer rate on the impinging plate is confined mainly in the small nozzle-to-plate spacings such as L/D<3 at the stagnation region. For small nozzle-to-plate spacings, the local heat transfer in the stagnation region is enhanced from the increased turbulence intensity due to swirl motion, compared with the conventional axisymmetric impinging jet without swirl. For example, the local Nusselt number of swirling jet with swirl number Sw=0.75 and Sw=1 is about 9.7-76% higher than that of conventional impinging jet at the radial location of R/D=0.5. With the increase of the nozzle-to-plate distance, the stagnation heat transfer rate is decreased due to the diminishing axial momentum of the swirling jet. However, the swirling impinging jet for all nozzle-to-plate spacings tested in this study does not enhance the average heat transfer rate.

  • This paper reports the effects of nozzle exit boundary layer swirl on the instability modes of underexpanded supersonic jets emerging from plane rectangular nozzles. The effects of boundary layer swirl at the nozzle exit on thrust and mixing of supersonic rectangular jets are also considered. The previous study was performed with a 30°boundary layer swirl (S=0.41) in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. At this study, a 45°boundary layer swirl (S=1.0) is applied in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. A three-dimensional unsteady compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code with Baldwin-Lomax and Chiens $\kappa$-$\xi$ two-equation turbulence models was used for numerical simulation. A shock adaptive grid system was applied to enhance shock resolution. The nozzle aspect ratio used in this study was 5.0, and the fully-expanded jet Mach number was 1.526. The \"flapping\" and \"pumping\" oscillations were observed in the jets small dimension at frequencies of about 3,900Hz and 7,800Hz, respectively. In the jets large dimension, \"spanwise\" oscillations at the same frequency as the small dimensions \"flapping\" oscillations were captured. As reported before with a 30°nozzle exit boundary layer swirl, the induction of 45°swirl to the nozzle exit boundary layer also strongly enhances jet mixing with the reduction of thrust by 10%.

  • Spray characteristics of high pressure injectors for diesel engines have been experimentally studied with special emphasis on the effect of swirl. A constant volume chamber was rotated in order to generate a continuous swirl having the flow field of a solid body rotation, resulting in the linear dependance of the swirl number on the rotating speed of the chamber. Emulsified fuel is injected into the chamber and the developing process of fuel sprays is visualized. The fuel spray developing process in D.I. diesel engine was investigated by this liquid injection technique. The effect of swirl on the spray tip penetration is quantified through modelling. Results show that the spray tip penetration is qualitatively different for low and high pressure injections. For high pressure injection case, a good agreement is achieved between the experimental results and the modeling accounting the effect of swirl. For low pressure injection, a reasonable agreement is obtained. It is found that excessive swirl may cause adverse effect on spray dispersion during the initial combustion period since the spray can not be impinged on chamber wall.

  • A numerical study is made of a flow in a cylinder with a rotating grooved endwall disk. The aim is to describe differences in the flow fields when there is concentrically-grooved obstacle characterized by amplitude(a) and wave number(N). The Reynolds number(Re) is varied from $10^{3}$ to $10^{4}$ and the aspect ratio(Ar) fixed to 1.0 for the most part of the simulation. For the various cases of amplitude(a) and wave number(N), numerical results are acquired. As the endwall groove roughness increases until certain limit, the interior azimuthal velocity component(v) increases drastically. But over the limit, the swirl motion chararcterized by velocity v decreases and finally it approaches much alike Ar=1.0-a case. The reason of activating swirl motion is based on increasing of torque transported by endwall disk. Torque coefficients($C_{T}$) are aquired for the various (a,N,Re) combinations and the limiting phenomena of swirl motion activation is explained.
