In this study, the variations of swirl center according to evaluating position have been investigated in a steady flow bench of SI engine. For the experiments, two engine heads with different intake valve angles ($11^{\circ}$ and $26^{\circ}$) were tested in the flow bench by varying the evaluating position (1.75~6.0B) and valve lift (2~10 mm). Particle image velocimetry was used to measure the velocity field inside the engine cylinder. The swirl center position is found with a critical point theory and the intensity of turbulence is calculated from PIV velocity data. The results show that the center of swirl is located closer to the center of cylinder and turbulence intensity is lower, when the intake valve angle is the smaller. It is conventional to evaluate the swirl ratio at 1.75B position in the steady flow bench of SI engine. At this position, however, the distance of swirl center from the cylinder center scatters significantly for the variation of valve lift, and the turbulence intensity is much stronger regardless of the valve angle. Thus, to estimate the flow at the end of compression stroke in a real engine from the data in the steady flow experiments, the evaluation position should be moved further downstream more than 4.5B.

Burner of Flat Flame type expects the uniform flame distribution and NOx reduction. The characteristics of Flat Flame Burner become different according to swirl number in the burner throat. Experiments were focused on swirl effect by four types of swirler with different swirl numbers (0, 0.26, 0.6 and 1.24). It shows many different flow patterns according to swirl number using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method. The flow of burner with swirler is recirculated by pressure difference between its center and outside. Recirculated air makes stable in flame, and reduced pollutant gas. In case of swirl number 0, main flow passes through axial direction. As swirl number increased, The backward flow develops in the center part of burner and Flow gas recirculates. This is caused by radial flow momentum becomes larger than axial flow by swirled air and the pressure at center drops against surrounding. As swirl number increases, the radial and axial velocity was confirmed to be larger than low swirl numbers. And turbulence intensity have similar pattern. The CTRZ(Central Toroidal Recirculation Zone) is shown evidently when y/D=1 and S=1.24. The boundary-layer between main flow and recirculated flow is shown that the width is seen to be decreased as swirl number increased.

The swirl ratio in a SI engine is investigated in a steady flow bench according to the measurement methods: an impulse swirl meter and particle image velocimetry (PIV). When measuring the swirl ratio using the PIV, the torque is evaluated based on the cylinder center and swirl center, respectively. The position of the measurement plane is considered. As a result, in the upstream, the swirl ratio measured by the impulse swirl meter is estimated to be larger than that from the PIV measurements due to the unstable vortex motions. Regarding the PIV measurements, the swirl ratio based on the cylinder center has been found to be lower than that based on the swirl center. On the other hand, the difference in swirl ratio has decreased smaller as the measurement plane moved downstream due to the stabilization of the vortex motion.

In this study, the flow and combustion characteristics of flat flame burner with twirler were investigated. There are several factors that define the characteristics of burner. Among them, the experiments was focused on swirl effect by four types of twirler in terms of flow structure, distribution of temperature and emission characteristics. In PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) experiment, the less of swirl number, axial flow is dominant at the center. As swirl number increases, the flow develops along the burner tile and backward flow becomes stronger at center. From the combustion characteristics, as long as combustion load increases, blow-off limit was improved. But at the higher swirl number, the limit is decreased. At swirl number 0, the temperature is shown typical distribution of long flame burner. but swirl number increases, the temperature distribution is uniform in front of round tile. Therefore, the temperature distribution is coincided with flow structure. As excess air ratio increases, NO concentrations are high. But high swirl number gives rise to become low NO concentrations. The flame characteristics are comprised in wrinkled laminar-flame regime according to turbulence Reynolds number(Rel) and Damkohler number(Da).
This study was performed to calculate the swirl ratio of a diesel engine intake port by a 1D computer simulation under actual engine operating conditions. The swirl ratio of the intake port was simulated according to the change of the engine speed during the operation of the motoring without fuel injection. The swirl ratio of the intake port was simulated according to changes in the crank angle during the four-cycle operation of intake, compression, expansion and exhaust. The swirl ratio represented by the three regions of the piston, center and squish was simulated. Among the three regions, the piston-region swirl ratio is important for effective air-fuel mixing in the engine cylinder. In particular, it was confirmed during the simulation that the piston swirl ratio before and after the compression top dead center (TDC) point when fuel is injected in the DI diesel engine can have a significant effect on the mixing of air and fuel. It was desirable to set the average piston swirl ratio over a crank angle section before and after compression TDC as the representative swirl ratio of the cylinder head intake port according to the change of the engine speed.

In the reactor for the american standard test method (ASTM) D5757-95 with swirl injection nozzles, the attrition characteristics of sand was investigated. The change of particle size distribution and weight of fine particles were compared to identify the effect of swirl injection nozzle on attrition. The fine particles due to particle attrition increased with increasing gas velocities. The weight of fine particles due to jet attrition was changed with angle of swirl injection nozzle. The fine particles decreased with decreasing the angle of swirl injection nozzle. Also, the change of particle size distribution increased with increasing the number of swirl injection nozzles at the same flow rate.
Recently, the HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine has been spotlighted as a next generation engine because it has a good potential for high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. This study was carried out to investigate the in-cylinder flow characteristics generated in a HSDI diesel engine with a 4-valve type cylinder head. The four kinds of cylinder head were manufactured to elucidate the effect of intake port geometry on the in-cylinder flow characteristics. The steady flow characteristics such as coefficient of flow rate $(C_{f})$, swirl ratio (Rs), and mass flow rate (m,) were measured by the steady flow test rig and the unsteady flow velocity within a cylinder was measured by PIV. In addition, the in-cylinder flow patterns were visualized by the visualization experiment and these results were compared with simulation results calculated by the commercial CFD code. The steady flow test results indicated that the mass flow rate of the cylinder head with a short distance between the two intake ports is $13\%$ more than that of the other head. However, the non-dimensional swirl ratio is decreased by approximately $15\%$. As a result of in-cylinder flow characteristics obtained by PIV and CFD calculation, we found that the swirl center was eccentric from the cylinder center and the position of swirl center was changed with crank angle. As the piston moves to near the TDC, the swirl center corresponded to the cylinder center and the velocity distribution became uniform. In addition, the results of the calculation are in good agreement with the experimental results.
Spacer grid with mixing vane had been widely used in nuclear reactor core. One of the main feather of spacer grid with mixing vane was that strong swirl flow was formed after the spacer grid. The swirl flow not only changed the bubble generation in the near wall field, but also affected the bubble behaviors in the center region of the subchannel. The interaction between bubble and the swirl flow was one of the basic phenomena for the two phase flow modeling in fuel assembly. To obatin better understanding on the bubble behaviors in swirl flow, full three dimension numerical simulations were conducted in the present paper. The swirl flow was assumed in the cylindral calculation domain. The bubble interface was captured by Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method. The properties of saturated water and steam at different pressure were applied in the simulation. The bubble trajectory, motion, shape and force were obtained based on the bubble parameters captured by VOF. The simulation cases in the present study included single bubble with different size, at different angular velocity conditions and at different pressure conditions. The results indicated that bubble migrated to the center in swirl flow with spiral motion type. The lateral migration was mainly related to shear stress magnitude and bubble size. The bubble moved toward the center with high velocity when the swirl magnitude was high. The largest bubble had the highest lateral migration velocity in the present study range. The effect of pressure was small when bubble size was the same. The prelimenery simulation result would be beneficial for better understanding complex two phase flow phenomena in fuel assembly with spacer grid.

In this work, the evaluation of swirl nozzle injector performance was conducted by investigating effective area ($A_{eff}$), injection mass ($m_{inj}$), injection rate ($Q_{inj}$), and injection delay ($t_{delay}$) under various test conditions. To achieve these, fuel injection analysis system which was composed of fuel supply system, injection system, and control system was installed. At the same time, the swirl nozzle that had 12 orifice hole with $120^{\circ}$ injection angle was used in this work. It was revealed that the difference of injection mass ($m_{inj}$) between base and swirl nozzle injector increased as the injection pressure ($P_{inj}$) and energizing duration ($t_{eng}$) decreased under the same test conditions. The maximum injection rate ($Q_{inj}$) of swirl nozzle injector was higher than base nozzle injector about 2~5%. The injection performance of swirl nozzle was better than base nozzle at low injection pressure ($P_{inj}$) and short energizing duration ($t_{eng}$) conditions.

The swirl flame is mostly used to stabilize the flame on the burner nozzle in the industrial combustor. In the case of the weak swirl flame(S<0.4), the recirculation zone could not be formed, but in the strong swirl(S>0.6) flame, it could be formed in the center of the swirl flame. In this study, the measurement and analysis of emission species, temperature, radicals of premixed swirl flame in the combustor were performed to understand the NO formation and emission characteristics of the swirl flame of natural gas. The result of NO emission in the swirl flame is that the amount of NO emission in the strong swirl flame decreased about 60% compared with that of the weak swirl flame. The main region of NO formation of the weak swirl flame is positioned in the down stream(z=100~200mm) of the flame, but that of the strong swirl flame is positioned in the up stream(z=40mm) where the recirculation zone seems to be formed. It is supposed that the increase of flame surface and the formation of inversed flame cause the reduction of the high temperature region on the production of NO in the strong swirl flame. The result of NO-temperature relation revealed that the factor of NO formation is not only temperature but also another parameters in the weak swirl flame, but in the strong swirl flame, NO is proportional to the temperature of higher than 1200K.
