Collagen scaffolds were synthesized by cross linking into a solution mixture of 1-ethyl-3-[3-dimethylaminopropyl] carbodiimide hydrochlorid(EDC) in ethanol, followed by pressing, cleaning and lyophilization process after the type I atelo-collagen solutions in D.I water(pH3). The experimental conditions are collagen concentration of 1.0 wt%, 3.0 wt%, 5.0 wt% and differential concentration of cross-linker. Then, parametric studies were performed by varying the parameters to investigate the morphology, the porosity, the swelling ratio and the thickness and genotoxicity of the scaffolds. The scaffolds thickness pattern was regular to concentration of the degree of cross-linker and collagen. It was observed that the swelling ratio, the degree of crosslink, and the pore size(thickness of scaffold) can be controlled by adjusting the collagen, crosslinker. Among the parameters investigated, the smallest thickness can be achieved by collagen, crosslinker concentrate condition. The collagen scaffold is induced no genotoxicity. The lowest swelling ratio, as an indication of the highest degree of crosslink, can be obtained by adding crosslink agent.

Hyaluronic acid(HA) microbeads were synthesized by dropping the sodium hyaluronate(Streptococcus) solutions in NaOH into a solution mixture of divinyl sulfone(DVS) in 2-methyl-1-propanol, followed by stirring, cleaning and drying process at room temperature. The initial experimental conditions are crosslinking time(CLTi) of 5 h, crosslinking temperature(CLTe) of room temperature, injection air pressure(IAPr) of 5 psi, and DVS concentration( DVSc) of 0.2 vol%, respectively. Then, parametric studies were performed by varying the parameters to investigate the morphology, the porosity, the swelling ratio and the size of the beads. The microbead size pattern was not regular to function of the degree of crosslink. It was observed that the swelling ratio, the degree of crosslink, and the pore size can be controlled by adjusting the CLTi, CLTe and DVSc. Among the parameters investigated, the smallest bead size can be achieved by varying the CLTi parameter. The lowest swelling ratio, as an indication of the highest degree of crosslink, can be obtained by varying CLTe.

A construction technique to install the soil-bentonite (SB) cut-off wall for in-situ geoenvironmental containment by employing the trench cutting and re-mixing deep wall method is first presented in this paper. The laboratory test results on the hydraulic barrier performance of SB in relation to the chemical compatibility are then discussed. Hydraulic conductivity tests using flexible-wall permeameters as well as swell tests were conducted for SB specimens exposed to various types and concentrations of chemicals (calcium chloride, heavy fuel oil, ethanol, and/or seawater) in the permeant and/or in the pore water of original soil. For the SB specimens in which the pore water of original soil did not contain such chemicals and thus the sufficient bentonite hydration occurred, k values were not significantly increased even when permeated with the relatively aggressive chemical solutions such as 1.0 mol/L $CaCl_2$ or 50%-concentration ethanol solution. In contrast, the SB specimens containing $CaCl_2$ in the pore water had the higher k values. The excellent linear correlation between log k and swelling pressure implies that the swelling pressure can be a good indicator for the hydraulic barrier performance of the SB.
In this study, we investigated for synthetic hydrotalcite in chloroprene rubber foam. Experiments were carried out to find the optimum content ratio by controlling the contents of MgO and Hydrotalcite. Swelling test in toluene immersion was made to measure the crosslinking density of CR foams, and the cure properties were investigated with flat die rheometer and Mooney viscosity. The difference of hardness, tensile strength and elongation at break were observed after immersing in 7% NaCl or 21% NaCl solutions for a day and four days. In addition, the volume change and water content remaining in CR foam were measured after immersing NaCl solution. As content of MgO increased, the value of the cure torque tended to increase, but it was almost constant above 2phr of MgO. However, the Mooney viscosity decreased with increasing MgO content. The crosslinking density, determined by the swelling ratio, showed that the CR compound without MgO showed a higher degree of swelling. When the content of hydrotalcite/MgO was 3:2, it was the lowest volume change of CR form. Also, As the content of hydrotalcite decreased, the difference of mechanical properties before and after immersion NaCl solution increased.
A interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel, composed of chitosan (CS) and poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) was prepared, which exhibited electrical sensitive behavior. The swelling behavior of the CS/PDADMAC SIPN hydrogel was studied by immersion of the gel into various pH buffer solutions, and their stimuli response in electric fields also investigated. In order to clarify the relationship between the equilibrium swelling ratio and bending behavior of the SIPN hydrogels, the state of water in the SIPN hydrogel was also investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
Octadecylenetrimethylammonium-montmorillonite as an organophilic montmorillonite intercalations complex was formed by cation exchange reaction between Na-montmorillonite and 9-octadecylenetrimethylammonium cation. After drying of this organophilic montmorillonite at $65^{\circ}C$ in high vacuum, the complexes were reacted with various swelling-solutions such as benzene, toluene, o-xylene, pyridine, $\alpha$-picoline, 2-ethyl-pyridine, 2-vinyl-pyridine and styrene, and the corresponding basal spacing obtained were 43.9$\AA$, 54.3$\AA$, 51.7$\AA$, 41.5$\AA$, 42.5$\AA$, 39.9$\AA$, 39.8$\AA$, 44.8$\AA$, respectively.
In this research, the organic salt [RCOOH] Br with long alkyl-chain was synthesized, and the organophilic [RCOOH]-Montmorillonite was formed by cation-exchange-reaction between Na-Montmorillonite and synthesized organic salt [RCOOH] Br. After drying of the organophilic [RCOOH]-Montmorillonite at $65^{\circ}C$ in high vaccum, the experiments for the probability of forming its complexes with various swelling-solutions as dist, water, methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile, propionitrile, butyronitrile, toluene and n-decanol were performed, and the corresponding basal spacings obtained were 17.44$\AA$, 31.86$\AA$, 34.38$\AA$, 30.37$\AA$, 32.39$\AA$, 35.04$\AA$, 14.16$\AA$ and 14.63$\AA$ respectively.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes crosslinked with Glutaraldehyde (GA) were prepared for the separation of acetic acid-water mixtures. For the preparation of the crosslinked membranes, dry PVA films were immersed for 2 days at 40$\circ$C in reaction solutions which contain different content of GA solution(25% GA in water), aceton and a catalyst, HCl. IR spectroscopy was employed to characterize the crosslinking reaction between hydroxyl groups in PVA and aldehyde groups in GA. Swelling measurements of the crosslinked membranes were carried out in both water and acetic acid to investigate the crosslinking density and swelling behaviour of the membranes.
The crosslinked films retaining cholesteric liquid-crystalline order were prepared by casting the liquid crystalline solutions of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) in methanol with the two kinds of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides (succinyl chloride and suberoyl chloride). The temperature dependence on the cholesteric pitch of the crosslinked films and the swelling behavior of the films in both water and methanol were investigated. The films displayed fingerprint patterns charateristic of cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase, and their pitches, as well as HPC itself, increased with temperature. However, the pitch of all crosslinked samples was much greater than that of HPC at the same temperature and increased with increasing concentration and chain length of the crosslinker. The crosslinked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling in both solvents. The degree of anisotropy slightly depended on the solvent and crosslinker species, but hardly on the crosslinker concentration investigated.

Carboxylated polysulfone (CPS), poly (1,4-phenylene ether ethersulfone) (PPEES), membranes were prepared and used for the separation of NaCl and $CaCl_2$, in efficient way with less energy consumption. In this work, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes were employed to the salt rejection behavior of the different salt solutions. The influence of applied pressure (1-12 bar), on the membrane performance was assessed. In CM series of membranes, $CM_1$ showed maximum of 97% water uptake and 36% water swelling, whereas, $CM_4$ showed 75% water uptake and 28% water swelling. In RCM series, $RCM_1$ showed 85% water uptake and 32% water swelling whereas, in $RCM_4$ it was 68% for water uptake and 20% for water swelling. Conclusively reverse osmosis membranes gave better rejection whereas nanofiltration membrane showed enhanced flux. CM1 showed 58% of rejection with 12 L/($m^2$ h) flux and $RCM_1$ showed 55% of rejection with 15 L/($m^2$ h) flux for 0.1 wt.% NaCl solution. Whereas, in 0.1 wt.% $CaCl_2$ solution, membrane $CM_1$ showed 78% of rejection with 12 L/($m^2$ h) flux and $RCM_1$ showed 63% rejection with flux of 9 L/($m^2$ h).
