Effect of Coloration on the Hydrophilicity and Swelling Properties of Poly-HEMA Hydrogels

  • Photopolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA), in the presence of ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate(EGDMA) and 1-Hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone as crosslinker and photoinitiator, respectively, produced crosslinked poly-HEMA hydrogels. The hydrogels were colored by the exhaustion of vinylsul-phone-type reactive dyes. Good colorfastness to laundering was achieved when colored with C.I. Reactive Black 5. We investigated that the effect of coloration on the hydrophilicity and swelling properties of the films. More hydrophilic gel-surfaces were generated with in increase in coloration and crosslinking. Higher surface energy was observed with higher crosslinking level. The more rapid and higher water swellability of poly-HEMA gels after coloration may be resulted from a more opened gel structure by the easier hydration of the hydrophilic sulphonic acid groups of the reacted dyes in water.

  • Several hydrolyzed extruded PAN's were prepared through reaction of extruded PAN (7.5% methyl acrylate) with NaOH in methanol at various temperatures and times. These were amidoximated with hydroxylamine in MeOH and/or $H_2$O to introduce an excellent adsorption capacity of heavy metal ions. Amidoximated hydrolyzed extruded fAN showed superior swellability to non-hydrolyzed extruded PAM. The amidoximated extruded PAN hydrolyzed for 6h at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the best dimensional stability. Amidoximated hydrolyzed extruded PAN has more adsorption capacity of $Cu^{2+}$ than that of $Ni^{ 2+}$ These PAN derivates also showed an excellent selectivity for adsorption of metal ions.

  • The physical properties of crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) by natural dyes as crosslinking agents were investigated and a comparison was made with chemically crosslinked PVA by Polycup 172. It was found that natural anthocyanin and crocin made possible to crosslink PVA physically through the hydrogen bonding of OH in both PVA and natural dyes in the present with NaCl as a catalyst. The water swellability dramatically decreased and the physical crosslinking led to decreasing of crystallinity of PVA. The lowering of thermal stability was noticed in the physically crosslinked PVA compared to chemically crosslinked PVA due to its lower crosslink density. However even natural dyes have polysaccharides in their chain, their thermal stability was higher than uncrosslinked PVA.

Prepyrolysis Structural Relaxation of Coal Studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Solvent Swelling

  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and solvent swelling technique have been applied for identifying physical transition temperatures in the macromolecular structure of coals. The transition processes seem to be associated with physical relaxation of the coal structure and are irreversible processes. In Pittsburgh No. 8 high volatile bituminous (hvb) coat one physical transition was noted at 250-30$0^{\circ}C$ (at 8$^{\circ}C$/min) without any significant accompanying weight loss. Coals of higher rank than high volatile bituminous, i.e., Upper Freeport medium volatile bituminous (mvb) and Pocahontas No.3 low volatile bituminous (lvb) coals, exhibit structural relaxation just before the major thermal decomposition process and a sharp increase in solvent swellability accompanies this relaxation. In the case of both the Pittsburgh No.8 and the Upper Freeport coat structural relaxations at around 36$0^{\circ}C$ seem to coincide with release of "guest molecules".les".uot;.

  • This study reports the preparation and characterization of nanohydrogels by using sodium alginate as a model material. Alginate nanohydrogels (ANH) were prepared by emulsification-diffusion method in a w/o system with 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero- 3-phosphocholin as the lipophilic surfactant. The effects of the alginate to surfactant ratio and the remaining water contents on the mean particle size and swellability of ANHs were investigated in terms of the concentration, agitation speed, and agitation time. The feasibility of using nanohydrogels and their controllability were proved by the water the absorbency of ANHs during a 7-day evaluation by dynamic light scattering. In this work, the mean particle sizes of ANHs could be controlled from 49.2 nm (measured in ethanol phase) to $1.9{\mu}m$ (measured in water phase, after 7 days of water absorption).

  • The water-soluble polyphosphazene possessing ether side groups was exposed to ${\gamma}-rays$ to prepare hydrogens with good water-swellability. The physical strength of these hydrogels could be controlled by irradiation dose of ${\gamma}-rays$. Trypsin and water-soluble polyphosphazene were irradiated together by ${\gamma}-rays$ for entrapment of enzymes into hydrogel networks. The activities of immobilized trypsin were examined spectrophotometrically after the reaction with N-${\alpha}$-benzoyl-1-arginine-p-nitroanilide in phosphate buffer. The immobilized trypsin was found to have good activity yield and suability after at least 500 hours.

  • Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAAm) containing polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) block and nano clay was obtained by the polymerization of NIPAAm and [3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]trimethyl ammonium montmorillonite(MAPTAC-MMT) with PDMS-macroinitiator. The polymer was characterized with FT-IR, XRD and DSC. The addition of PDMS in the polymers did not affect the value of the lower critical solution temperature(LCST) and the glass transition temperature($T_g$) of the PNIPAAm. However, the swelling ratio decreased with increasing PDMS contents. In the case of PNIPAAm containing nano clay, the content of MAPTAC-MMT did not affect swellability, but the $T_g$ of the PNIPAAm decreased with increasing nano clay contents.

  • Isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), polytetramethylene glycol 1000 (PTMG1000), and N-methyl diethanol amine (MDEA) were applied to prepare cationic polyurethane water dispersions (PUD). Various neutralizers and chain extenders were introduced in order to investigate property changes, such as particle size, viscosity, $T_g$, tensile strength, and water swellability, depending on chemical structure of those chemicals. While the PUDs neutralized by acetic acid showed a typical elastomeric behavior, the others used with hydrochloride presented crystalline behavior. Among chain extenders isophorone diamine (IPDA) provided the best mechanical property. The particle size of the PUD neutralized with HCl was smaller than that with acetic acid. It is believed that this is attributed to the size difference of counter ions. The PUD chain-extended with hydrazine had the smallest particle size.

Preparation and Characterization of Bentonite Rheology Modifiers (벤토나이트 유동성 개질제의 제조 및 특성)

  • Six different composition of water-swellable bentonite rheology modifiers(WSB-1~WSB-6) were prepared by the compounding of peptizers and anionic surfactants as an additives with Bentonite(BEN) of montmorillonite group. Average particle size, particle morphology and water-swellability of WSB and the viscosity with additives were measured, respectively. And the rheological behavior of WSB were investigated using the rheometer. The viscosity of WSB-1 increased with decreasing both pH and average particle size of BEN, WSB-2 treated $Na_2CO_3$ as a peptizer showed the maximum viscosity. These results can be interpretated cause for rearrangment as the edge-to-face structure of BEN particles containing WSB. Also, WSB-4∼WSB-6 containing both peptizer and anionic surfactant was sol phase that their viscosity was not nearly with the shear rate, however, WSB-3 containing Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate(TSPP) as an anionic surfactant showed the thixotropy by the viscosity difference of 1000 times with the shear rate. From this result, the anions of TSPP can be explained to arrange in edge of BEN particles containing WSB-3.

Physico-chemical properties and biological activity of controlled-release granular formulations for the herbicide dicamba (방출조절형 dicamba 입제의 물리화학성 및 생물효과)

  • Dicamba (3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid) granular formulations for controlled release (DGFCRs) were prepared with biodegradable polymers, corn starch and pregelatinized starch, to minimize harmful side effects, extend weed control performance, and control the releasing rate of the active ingredient. Physico-chemical properties and biological activity of DGFCRs were studied. Six different granules were formulated by applying two processes, granulation and extrusion. Formulation efficiencies of active ingredient (A.I.) in the granules prepared by granulating and extruding were $90.0{\sim}96.3%$. Incorporation ratios of A.I. in the granules prepared by granulating and extruding showed $89.5{\sim}94.5%$ and $46.7{\sim}82.0%$, respectively. The highest swellability was DG-2 formulation prepared with corn starch. Whereas, the lowest floatability in water was DG-2 formulation, while the highest one was DG-1 formulation prepared with pregelatinized starch, Miragel 463. The degradation rates of dicamba in the granules under the elevated temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ were less than 5% for DG-1 and DG-2 formulations even after 90 days, meanwhile, those of DE-1 formulations prepared with pregelatinized starch, Mirasperse, were more than 5%. The release rates of A.I. from the granules into water under a static condition were about 100% after 2 weeks. Weeding effects of the granules on broad leaf weeds tested in greenhouse were more than 90% after 30 days.
