  • The requirements to the numerical model of wind-generated waves in shallow water are discussed in the framework of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The weakness of nonlinearity and dispersion required for the Korteweg-de Vries equation applicability is considered for fully developed sea, non-stationary wind waves and swell, including some experimental data. We note for sufficient evaluation of the freak wave statistics it is necessary to consider more than about 10,000 waves in the wave record, and this leads to the limitation of the numerical domain and number of realizations. The numerical modelling of irregular water waves is made to demonstrate the possibility of effective evaluation of the statistical properties of freak waves with heights equal to 2-2.3 significant wave height.

  • This paper proposes a quasi Z-source DVR(Dynamic Voltage Restorer) system with a series connection of the output terminals, to compensate the voltage variations in the 6.6[kV]/60[Hz] power distribution system. The conventional DVR using one quasi Z-source AC-AC converter has the advantage which it can compensate the voltage variations without the need for the additional energy storage device such as a battery, but it is impossible to compensate for the 50[%] under voltage sags. To solve this problem, a DVR system using two quasi Z-source AC-AC converters with the series connection of the output terminals is proposed. By controlling the duty ratio D in the buck-boost mode, the proposed system can control the compensation voltage. For case verification of the proposed system, PSIM simulation is achieved. As a result, in case that the voltage sags-swells occur 10[%], 20[%], 60[%] in power distribution system, and, in case that the 50[%] under voltage sags-swells continuously occur, all case could compensate by the proposed system. Especially, the compensated voltage THD was examined under the condition of the 10[%]~50[%] voltage sags and the 20[${\Omega}$]~100[${\Omega}$] load changes. The compensated voltage THD was worse for the higher load resistances and more severe voltage sags. Finally, In case of the voltage swells compensation, the compensation factor has approached nearly 1 regardless of the load resistance changes, while the compensation factor of voltage sags was related to the load variations.

  • Power quality has become concern both utilities and their customers with wide spread use of electronic and power electronic equipment. The poor quality of electric power causes malfunctions, instabilities and shorter lifetime of the load. In power system operation, power system disturbances such as faults, overvoltage, capacitor switching transients, harmonic distortion and impulses affects power quality. For diagnosing power quality problem, the causes of the disturbances should be understood before appropriate actions can be taken. In this paper we present a new approach to detect, localize, and investigate the feasibility of classifying various types of power quality disturbances. This paper deals with the use of a multi-resolution analysis by a discrete wavelet transform to detect power system disturbances such as interruption, sag, swell, transients, etc. We also proposed do-noising and threshold technique to detect power system disturbances in a noisy environment. To find the better mother wavelet for detecting disturbances, we compared the performance of the disturbance detection with the several mother wavelets such as Daubechies, Symlets, Coiflets and Biorthogonals wavelets. In our analysis, we adopt db4 wavelet as mother wavelet because it shows better results for detecting several disturbances than other mother wavelets. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, a various case studies are simulated for the example system which is constructed by using PSCAD/EMTDC. From the simulation results. proposed method detects time Points of the start and end time of the disturbances.

  • The fatigue damages in structural details of offshore plants can be accumulated due to various environmental loadings such as swell, wave, wind and current. It is known that load histories acting on mooring and riser systems show stationary and ergodic bimodal wide-banded process. This paper provides refined approach to obtain time signals representing stress range histories from wide-banded bimodal spectrum which consists of ideally narrow-banded and fully separated two spectrums. Variations of the probabilistic characteristics for time signals according to frequency and sampling time increments are compared with the reference data to be the probabilistic characteristics such as zero-crossing period, peak period, and irregularity factor obtained from an assumed ideal spectrum. It is proved that the sampling time increment more affects on the probabilistic characteristics than frequency increment. The fatigue damages according to the frequency and sampling time increments are also compared with the ones with minimum increment condition which are thought to be exact fatigue damage. It is concluded that the maximum sampling time increment to obtain reliable time signals should be determined that ratio of applied maximum sampling time increment and minimum period is less than approximately 0.08.

  • This study introduces a reinforcement work case using Twin-Jet Method. The area is located behind the abutment of the bridges built on soft clay along the $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ Express Highway. Its foundation was constructed by installing EPS blocks on the original ground to reduce the embankment load under the highway. However, the ground deformation has continuously occurred due to the settlement of the foundation soft cohesive soils. The amounts of subsidences at the surface turned out to be 20~30.0mm, After the pavement patch work on April 23, 2009, a drastic subsidence occurred together with 10mm swell, For this reason, Twin-Jet grout column construction was applied by passing through the EPS banking blocks without closing traffic flows on the express highway. The outcomes of core sample tests after reinforcing the ground turned out to be TCR 92.5%, RQD 64.6% and unconfined compressive strength 2.3~8.6Mpa. The test results showed that the condition of the ground foundation had improved using Twin-Jet grouting in most layers of ground including the cobble and gravel layer.

  • Up to now, the various water proofing methods and materials have been developed. For the water proofing methods, poly-urethane membrane method is one of the commonly used and increase market share in water proofing industry due to it's many advantages. However, in spite of it's many advantages over other water proofing methods, water proofing defect occurs frequently. With this respect, the study investigate water proofing defect causes in roof water proofing. The study investigate 13 water proofing construction site in Sunchon city in oder to find urethane membrane defection causes and their type. As a results of the study, the followings are founded. 1) Among various water proofing defection causes, problems of water remain phenomenon due to surface horizontal level defect which occupy $25\;\%$ of total defect causes is the most commonly occur. 2) The second defect cause which occupy $15\;\%$ of total defect causes is the swell up phenomenon due to surface dry problem. For the prevention of water proofing defection in roof using urethane membrane, the followings are recommended. 1) Faultless surface treatment before using urethane membrane 2) Develop improved urethane membrane material 3) Improve urethane membrane construction technique

  • This paper proposes a new Artificial-Intelligent(AI) Power Quality(PQ) diagnosis algorithm using Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT), Fast Fourier Transform(FFT), Root-Mean-Square(RMS) value. The developed algorithm is able to detect and classify the PQ problems such as the transient, the voltage sag, the voltage swell, the voltage interruption and the total harmonics distortion. The 15.36[kHz] sampling frequency is used to measure the voltages in a power system. The measured signals are used for DWT, FFT, RMS calculation. For AI diagnosis of the PQ problems, a simple multi-layered Artificial Neural Network(ANN) with the back-propagation algorithm is adopted, programmed in C++ and tested in PSIM simulation studies. Finally, the algorithm, which is installed in MP PQ+256 with TI DSP320C6713, is proved to diagnose the PQ problems efficiently.

  • The objectives of the current work is to understand the factors impacting the formulation and performance of a Carbopol mucoadhesive buccal delvery system for a model peptide drug, $[D-Ala{^2},\;D-Leu{^5}]$enkephalin (DADLE, Mw=569.7) with comparable chemical and enzymatic stability. Specifically, in vitro buccal DADLE delivery from the cross-linked poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel system was characterized. In addition, the influences of several penetration enhancers on the ex vivo buccal absorption of DADLE were also studied. In this study, the PAA hydrogels generally swell to 100% of their original weight in the phosphate pH 7.4 buffer. The water penetration into the PAA hydrogel occurred based on a zero-order kinetics for the first 60 min and steadily decreased afterwards. From the release study, it can be seen that the initial DADLE release was so rapid and the rate of release of DADLE decreased as the time elapsed. The porcine buccal tissue was found to be permeable to DADLE with a flux value of $0.07%/cm{^2}/hr({\pm}0.01\;SD)$. From the ex vivo diffusion study, it was found that sodium taurodihydrofusidate showed a greater degree of enhancement compared to the phospholipids with an Enhancement Ratio (ER) of 8.7 compared to 2.7 and 1.9 for didecanoylphosphatidylcholine and lysophosphatidylcholine, respectively. The work encompassed within this paper has demonstrated the feasibility of using the PAA hydrogel delivery system with its good mucoadhesive properties for the buccal delivery of peptides.

  • The additional matters appear to be considered in several aspects for building up power-quality measuring system of transmission system(high voltage system) compared to distribution system(middle or low voltage system). Like in distribution system, input signals are also received from PT and CT source of voltage and current respectively in transmission system and applied in accordance with a certain rate. In this case, very big error rate can be occurred according to the specification of the measuring system as the applying rate is bigger than in distribution system beyond comparison. In addition, when the abnormal signal occurred such as sag/swell, interruption, transient etc., power quality of other sites linked to the system also should be checked to find the accurate cause of the abnormal power-quality signals from the corresponding site. Accordingly, the accurate diagnosis on the condition of Power quality for the system depends on the way how the synchronization system is brought along for each site. This paper will suggest the solution for the most effective system building focused on how to solve the problem of the error rate and synchronization described in the above when building up the measuring system of power quality for transmission system.

  • An experimental study that included detailed observation of four 305-mm-diameter drilled shafts, one reference shaft of standard design and three test shafts with isolation tubes to mitigate skin friction in the vadose zone of a clay soil profile, is described. The shafts were loaded only by naturally expanding and contraction soil over a period of 17 months. The soil at the test site was instrumented to track suction and elevation changes. Maximum ground surface movements exceeding 40 mm were observed. Heave movements of less than 1.5 mm were observed in the test shafts with isolation tubes, while movements of 5 mm were observed in the reference shaft. Unit side shear loads in the shafts protected by the isolation tubes were minimal compared to those measured in the reference shaft. This indicates that the isolation tubes were very effective.
