Attempt was made to establish identification methods for irradiated starch. Commercial starches (corn starch/CS, sweet potato starch/SS, and potato starch/PS) were irradiated at 0-6.0 kGy and used to measure viscosity with Brookfield DV-III programmable rheometer. Starch suspensions were prepared at 8.0 (7.2%, d.b.), 8.5 (7.3%, d.b.), and 9.0% (7.3%, d.b.) for CS, SS, and PS, respectively at 100 rpm in spindle speed. Results showed viscosities of samples significantly decreased (p<0.05) as irradiation dose increased, with $R^2$ 0.9754, 0.9618, and 0.9888 for CS, SS, and PS, respectively. Irradiation dose at 1.5 kGy induced decrease in viscosity as compared to non-irradiated control by 34, 57, and 51% in CS, SS, and PS, respectively, suggesting viscometry could lie applied to identify irradiated starches. Solubility and alkali number of irradiated starches significantly increased with irradiation doses, while swelling power decreased (p<0.05). Results suggested solubility, alkali number, and swelling power for irradiated starches complement identification results of viscometry.
In order to evaluate the effect of soil salinity and culturing conditions including compost application and vinyl mulching on the maintenance of ridge and the growth of upland crops, three crops such as corn, soybean and sweet potato were experimented by using three or four cultivars of crops in the Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land. Average soil salinity before seeding was 2 dS $m^{-1}$, which was low enough for general upland crops to grow. However, high soil EC more than 16 dS $m^{-1}$ was observed in some parts of the experimented field. In the experiment, it was concluded that growth retardation and yield reduction of summer upland crops might be from severe erosion of ridge, soil compaction, flooding or wet soil condition and high salinity of some parts, and then these deteriorations were possibly improved for good crop growth and yield increase by compost application and vinyl mulching cultivation in the Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land.
A sweet corn hybrid, Golden Cross Bantam 70, was grown at 5 plant populations (5,000, 6,000, 7,000, 8,000, and 9,000 plants/10a) under the transparent P .E. film mulch to find the best yield evaluation method. Plant population did not affect early plant growth, culm length, ear height, and silking date. However, number of tillers at harvest decreased but leaf area index increased with increased plant population. Marketable ears were divided into two classes; the first grade of which husked ear weight over l50g (unhusked ear weight 230g) and the second grade of which husked ear weight between 100 and 150g (unhusked ear weight between 180 and 230g) according to the whole sale market price. Average length, thickness, and weight of marketable ears over 100g of husked ears decreased with increased plant population. The proportion of ears over 150g decreased with increased plant population. However, total number and weight of marketable ears and gross income per 10a calculated considering weight and number of ears increased with plant population. There were highly positive correlations between gross income and ear number or ear weight per unit area. At high plant populations the number of marketable ears was overestimated but ear weight underestimated compared with gross income. Dry matter yield of stover increased with increased plant population and ranged 755-944kg/10a with 20.7-24.5% dry matter content. Rice black-streaked dwarf virus infection rate was 10.6-14.9%, but it was not related to plant population.
Various enzymes produced by the Basidiomycetes, i.e. Pleurotus ostreatus, Pholiota nameko and Flammulina velutipes have been analysed. The purpose of the analyses is to produce a nutritious fertilizer from saw dust, sweet potato stems, corn stems and barley stems which are known as the farm product waste materials. The results of the analyses are as follows: 1. In order for P. ostreatus, Pho. nameko and F. velutipes to grow properly, the saw dust of broad-leaved trees, poplar and chestnut were mixed with sweet-potato stems, corn stems and barley straws at the ratio of $42{\sim}49\;:\;30$, and then to this mixture was added rice bran at the ratio of $18{\sim}35\;:\;30$ The following proved to be optimum conditions for the growth in this test: the parcentage of water content $60{\sim}70%$, $24{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ degrees of temperature. 2. We analyzed the fiber contained in the above materials after 20 days growth in various media. We found out that the fiber was decomposed up to $47{\sim}50%$ and polysaccharified. Lignin was decomposed up to $20{\sim}25%$ and about three times as much protein was contained in the product as in the original materials. 3. Our analyses revealed the possibility of producing concentrated feed from the crude fiber.

Identification of main ingredients in starches has been investigated using physicochemical analysis method mainly. However, physicochemical properties such as particle size have limitations in determining the differences among mixed starches. Therefore, we developed a molecular biological method to identify materials used in starch, as a sample, 11 kinds of starches including sweet potato starch, potato starch, corn starch, and tapioca starch. DNeasy plant mini kit, magnetic DNA purification system, and CTAB methods were used to extract DNA from samples. After gene extraction, whole genome amplification (WGA) was performed to amplify the extracted DNA. Species-specific primers were used as followings: ib-286-F/ib-286-R (105 bp), Pss 01n-5'/Pss 01n-3' (216 bp), SS11b 3-5'/SS11b 3-3' (114 bp), and SSRY26-F/SSRY26-R (121 bp) gene for sweet potato, potato, corn, and tapioca, respectively. In this study, we could confirm the main ingredients using WGA and PCR method.
This study was conducted to provide basic information for weed control by surveying the occurrence of weed species in upland crop fields in Gyeongnam province of Korea. The result of this survey, 55 weed species 21 families in barley fields, 56 weed species 22 families in garlic fields, 47 weed species 19 families in onion fields, 68 weed species 26 families in Chinese cabbage fields, 54 weed species 22 families in potato fields, 62 weed species 25 families in sweet potato fields, 87 weed species 29 families in red pepper fields, 79 weed species 28 families in corn fields, 84 weed species 29 families in soybean fields. The most dominant weed species in upland crop fields of Gyeongnam province were Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis 20.7% (barley fields), Cardamine flexuosa 12.3% (garlic fields), Chenopodium ficifolium 18.7% (onion fields), Portulaca oleracea 8.1% (Chinese cabbage fields), Chenopodium ficifolium 13% (potato fields), Digitaria ciliaris 12.6% (sweet potato fields and red pepper fields) and Digitaria ciliaris 11.3% (corn fields), 13.2% (soybean fields). This information could be useful for establishment of future weed control methods in Gyeongnam province.

Viscometry was applied to identify irradiated corn starch (CS), sweet potato starch (SS), and potato starch (PS) from non-irradiated controls using Brookfield DV-III programmable rheometer. Effects of starch suspension concentration (7.0-9.5%) and spindle speed (25-125 rpm) were investigated. Established optimal viscosity-measuring conditions showed the highest correlation coefficient between irradiation dose (0-6.0 kGy) and corresponding viscosities for CS, SS, and PS. Threshold values for identifying irradiated starches were suggested. Viscosities of all samples significantly decreased with increasing irradiation dose (p<0.05) and spindle speed, while increased as suspension concentration increased. Optimal conditions for suspension concentration and spindle speed were 7.5% (6.7%, d.b.) and 125rpm in CS, 8.5% (7.3%, d.b.) and 125 rpm in SS, and 9.0% (7.3%, d.b.) and 100rpm in PS, respectively. Under these measuring conditions, threshold values for discriminating unknown samples were 0.313, 0.345, and 0.811 for CS, SS, and PS in 1.5 kGy-irradiated samples, compared with 0.521, 0.798, and 1.693 in non-irradiated samples, respectively, enabling identification of irradiated from non-irradiated starches.
The effects of gamma irradiation at medium dose levels on commercial starches (corn starch/CS, sweet potato starch/SS, and potato starch/PS) were investigated in terms of its color and lipid oxidation. The CS, SS, and PS samples were irradiated at 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 kGy by a Co-60 gamma irradiator and used for measuring Hunter's colors and TBA value. Irradiation doses applied did not cause apparent changes in Hunter color parameters between the control and irradiated groups. But, the decrease in lightness (L value) for CS and the increase in both redness (a value) for SS and yellowness (b value) for PS were observed, respectively, thereby resulting in slight increase in overall color difference (${\Delta}E$) upon irradiation. Browning intensity observed with the naked eye for gelatinized starches by irradiation doses was also gradually increased along with irradiation dose, which was more remarkable in SS. The thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values of samples showed a dose-dependant increase with ${\geq}0.9964$ of $R^2$ (p<0.05).
In this study, we performed to select the high growth potential agri-products in Ulsan City, Korea. For this, we carried out the location quotient and the regional growth rate differential analyses using the cultivated area data and the agricultural output data in 2000, 2005 and 2007. The location quotient analysis revealed that rice, pear and persimmon were classified as specialized agri-products. These results would be useful to reflect on a short-term policy in support for the agricultural activities of the local farmers because the specialized agri-products occupy a relatively high proportion in the region. In addition, the regional growth rate differential analysis showed that strawberries, persimmon, potatoes, corn and sweet potato are classified as growing agri-products whereas pear is classified as a competitive agri-product in the analysis based on agricultural output from 2000 to 2007. Based on cultivated area, strawberries, potatoes and corn are classified as growing agri-products whereas sweet potato is classified as a competitive agri-product. These results would be beneficial to establish a long-term agricultural policy in Ulsan City because these agri-products are further supported by the time series analysis, considering the nationwide trends and the production activities reflecting the preferences of consumers and the willingness of producers.
This experiment was carried out to obtain the basic information necessary to establish suitable postharvest handling techniques and to keep high quality of the sweet(Danok 2), supersweet(Cooktail 86) and waxy(Chalok 1) corn which are mainly consumed as vegetable in Korea. Vegetable corns were cooled with ice fragments in the insulation box immediately after harvest and stored in low temperature warehouse at 0 to 2$^{\circ}C$. During the 15 days short-term storage, changes of chemical components were compared with those of uncooled corns. The losses of moisture in kernels were as high as 7.4 to 24.4% in uncooled corns while those of ice cooled corns increased 0.4 to 0.5% of their weight. The ratio of pericarp and alcohol insoluble solid(AIS) content increased as the storage days prolonged in all treatments but increasing rates were much higher in uncooled samples. On the other hand, the total sugar loss during storage was the least in supersweet corn when they were cooled with ice fragments in insulation box. After 5 days storage, the ice cooled samples showed the highest free amino acid contents compare to those of uncooled and stored at room temperature (25 to 3$0^{\circ}C$) or low temperature warehouse, and ${\gamma}$-aminobutylic acid (GABA) which was known as a fuctional amino acid was detected in all three kinds of vegetable corns.
