DNA barcoding of Euphorbiaceae in Korea

  • The Euphorbiaceae family features some of the most economically important plants that are sources of foods, oils, waxes, and medicines. The accurate identification of Euphorbiaceae species is critical in sustainable utilization of plant resources. We examined 234 sequences of nrDNA ITS, cpDNA rbcL and matK loci from 20 species in Euphorbiaceae in Korea and three outgroup taxa to develop efficient DNA barcodes. The three barcode loci were successfully amplified and sequenced for all Euphorbiaceae species. nrDNA ITS locus showed the highest mean interspecific K2P distance (0.3034), followed by cpDNA matK (0.0830), and rbcL (0.0352) locus. The degree of species resolution for individual barcode loci ranged from 75% (rbcL and matK) to 80% (ITS). The degree of species resolution was not enhanced with the different combinations of three barcode loci. The combined data set of the three loci(ITS+rbcL+matK) provided 80% of species resolution. These results confirm that ITS locus, as a single barcode, is the best option for barcoding of the Euphorbiaceae in Korea.

  • Justicia kampotiana Benoist (쥐꼬리망초과)를 베트남 미기록종으로 보고한다. 본 종은 유사종인 J. ingrata Benoist와 달리 외화관에 털이있으며, 화통은 판연 보다 약간 길고 화병보다는 아주 짧다. 종 동정을 위한 기재, 그림도해 및 컬러사진과 함께 본 종과 유사종의 비교를 위한 검색형질들을 제시하였다.

Electrocatalytic Oxidation of HCOOH on an Electrodeposited AuPt Electrode: its Possible Application in Fuel Cells

  • Controlled electrodeposition of dendritic nano-structured gold-platinum (AuPt) alloy onto an electrochemically pretreated carbon paper substrate was conducted in an attempt to improve catalyst utilization and to secure an electronic percolation network toward formic acid (FA) fuel cell application. The AuPt catalysts were obtained by potentiostatic deposition. AuPt catalysts synthesized as bimetallic alloys with 60% Au content exhibited the highest catalytic activity towards formic acid electro-oxidation. The origin of this high activity and the role of Au were evaluated, in particular, by XPS analysis. Polarization and stability measurements with 1 mg $cm^{-2}$ AuPt catalyst (only 0.4 mg $cm^{-2}$ Pt) showed 52 mW $cm^{-2}$ and sustainable performance using 3M formic acid and dry air at $40^{\circ}C$.

  • Integrated construction site management using RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) and facility maintenance introducing USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) have been widely used in the mega construction project sites. But, the validation on performance of RFID systems after introducing those has not been carried out. Given that the use of RFID systems have been increased, the construction industry as well as other industries needs the evaluation of the RFID system. By regarding the necessities for evaluation, a research to the satisfaction and importance evaluation of RFID system from the end-users' view point for site management was conducted. Satisfaction-importance matrix of satisfaction standards and importance standards was created (organised) according to the analysis result of a survey, proposed improvement methods and analysis about the items presented by each region like areas of sustainable maintenance, maintenance, progressive improvement and priority improvement. The result would contribute to enhance the utilization of system and its performance.

  • An integrated water environment management system is necessary in improving water quality, properly allocating water resources, and supporting socio-economic development. Specifically, water quality management system using web map can be an efficient approach to accomplish this system. This paper aims to construct a dynamic water quality management system to reflect a water environment management system which includes three sub-models with consideration of their interrelationships (a socio-economic model based on dynamic Input-Output model, a water resources cycle model, and a water pollutants flow model). Based on simulation, the model can precisely estimate trends of water utilization, water quality, and economic development under certain management targets, and propose an optimal plan. This study utilized the model to analyze the potential of using reclaimed water to accomplish local water environment management and sustainable development plan while exploring the applicable approaches. This study indicates that the constructed water environment management system can be effective and easily adopted to assess water resources and environment while improving the trade-off between economic and environment development, as well as formulate regional development plan.

  • Today, the sports teams are in a highly competitive environment where they don't know what may happen in the near future. While the front-runner teams suffer a serious slump, the teams in lower ladder stacks victories. This recent phenomenon proves that no team can secure the sustainable competitive edge over others. This is the time when a complete change of the mindset about the short-term competitive edge is needed. Therefore, we conducted the case study to the short-term competitive edges by selecting OK Savings Bank Rush & Cash volleyball team(hereafter referred to as OK Savings Bank). Thus, we presented the Transient Advantage Wave which describes the five stages of Initiating-Promotion-Utilization-Reconstruction-Withdrawal as a framework for the case study. Finally, we organized the results of the analysis and based on this result, we discussed the significance and the limitation of the short-term competitive edge that the sports team should pursue. This study contributed to the changes in strategies & tactics of various sports teams by suggesting the new strategy called short-term competitive edges that teams should utilize in order to get the best results in the sports league that has the strong quality of Time-based system.

  • In 2000s, the interest of ROHAS has been increased and the environmental problem has begun to be discussed as the environmental and global value, not the individual perspective. And the standard of value for eco-friendly awareness has been expanded to the economic category. The trend of eco-friendly fabric can be divided into 3 periods depending on the property. The period for natural fabric with visual effects(2002~2004) can be summarized as the creation of natural shape using the natural image, the interaction of cotton and the technology from the visual perspective. In the period of functional conjunction with eco-friendliness and technology(2005~2008), the eco-friendly awareness through the conjunction of technology and nature and the re-cycling, and the responsibility to the environment had been increased. In the period of sustainable development for nature and environment(2009~2011), it showed the conjunction with nature and the integration with technology and eco-friendly issues. Therefore, the characteristic of eco-friendly trend in fabric since 2000 can be said; firstly, the high-quality fabric has been developed with technological development for the functional progress. Secondly, the ethical creativity has been displayed with the development and utilization of eco-friendly recycling materials. Thirdly, the materials reflected with eco-friendly issues have emerged.

전기자동차 보급에 따른 공공임대아파트의 변압기 안정성 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Safety Evaluation of the Transformer for the Public Rental Apartments Considering the Increase of EVs)

  • This paper aims to analyze the safety evaluation of the existing transformer for the 0.85 millions of public rental apartments as EVs(Electric Vehicles) increase in order to overcome the environment pollution issue and maintain sustainable development. It is analyzed that the 56.4% capacity of power transformer could secure as EV charging infrastructure, based on the analysis of respective utilization patterns of the housing and power transformer. The acceptable number of EVs is 0.04~0.06 per household from the spare capacity of the power transformer. It is analyzed that EV stock is prospected less than 0.03 per household in 2030, considering the condition of the public rental apartments residents and the growth rate of EVs according to practical scenario. The power demand for EVs is within the allowable capacity range of the power transformer, so the research shows that there is no problem in the stability of the existing transformer until 2030.

  • 본 연구에서는 한국의 EA 추진노력을 준비기, 기반/적용기 및 활용기로 구분하여 정리하였으며, 이후 개별기관 EA와 범정부 EA의 성과 및 시사점과 향후 정책방향에 대한 조언을 제시해보았다. 한국의 EA 추진노력은 개별기관 차원에서는 중복투자 방지, 자원 재사용 등의 성과를 보이고 있으며, 범정부 차원에서도 자원 최적화에 따른 정보화예산 절감의 성과를 보이고 있다. EA 추진현황 및 성과를 알아보고 향후 공공부문의 EA가 지속적으로 발전해 나갈 수 있는 정책방향을 제시한다.

왕겨의 화학적 조성 및 왕겨섬유의 형태적 특성 (Chemical Composition of Rice Hull and Morphological Properties of Rice Hull Fibers)

  • The rice hull could be the one of the most abundant agricultural waste in Korea. Since the efficient utilization of agricultural waste or byproducts of food industry would be critical for the sustainable growth, this study conducted the investigation of the chemical composition and the morphological properties of rice hull and rice hull fiber. It was found that there was big difference between the outer surface and the inner surface in the chemical composition and the morphological properties. Expecially, the outer surface showed the rugged patterns in which most of silica of rice hull existed. Little or no silica was found in the inner surface and rice hull fiber. The average fiber length of rice hull fiber was 0.45mm which was shorter than that of hardwood fiber. Rice hull fiber showed a round long shape which is typical shape of non-wood fibers
