  • This paper presents optimal design of controllable magnetorheological suspension unit for a tracked vehicle. As a first step, a double-rod type MR suspension unit is designed on the basis of the Bingham model of commercially available MR fluid, and its damping characteristics are evaluated with respect to the intensity of the magnetic field. Subsequently, the governing equation of motion of the MR suspension system featuring the MR valve is established. Then, the optimization problem to find optimal geometric dimensions of the MR supension unit is formulated by considering an objective function which is related to damping torque and control energy. The first order optimization method intergrated with a commercial finite element method(FEM) software is adopted to obtain optimal solution of the system. The performance characteristics of the optimized MR susepnsion unit is then evaluated and compared with initial one.

  • In this paper, the vibration for a pickup actuator is described by mathematically analyzing its suspension configuration and motion, confined to lateral and torsional directions of suspensions. In order to prove the accuracy of this result, it is compared to a finite element analysis. Also it is shown that modal frequencies can be modified by changing design parameters in mathematical motion expressions.

  • This research demonstrates the transient response of a head disk assembly subjected to a half-sine shock pulse in the axial direction. In case of disk analysis, the numerical method presented by Barasch and Chen is used. Galerkin method is used with mode shape by numerical method. head-suspension system is modeled by the cantilever in order to get simulation results. Simulation results about total system of HDA are calculated by Runge-Kutta method.

  • This study was conducted to simulate the influence of vibration associated with cycling on the body. In this simulation the human model that the riding on a bicycle which have suspension and non-suspension front forks was used. And to arouse impact two kind of bump, 50mm height of radical raised spot and 150mm height of slow raised spot, were used. The vertical displacement of head, the vertical acceleration of head and the torque of neck joint were analysed. The results say that the function of shock absorbing was grater when passing though a 50mm height of radical raised spot then a 150mm height of slow raised spot.

  • Servo performance of a disk drive is greatly affected by the mechanical resonance frequencies of the head gimbal assembly (HSA). It is important factor to allow broader bandwidths for servo system in improving overall drive performance. In this paper, an optimal design for ODD suspension is attempted to increase resonance frequencies in tracking direction. Initial model was designed and the design parameter was defined to the model. The mode frequency variation for the change of design parameter was observed by modal analysis using the finite element method(FEM). The sensitivity matrix was calculated from the observed data and so through sensitivity analysis, an optimized ODD suspension was designed to have the higher resonant frequency than the initial model.

  • To satisfy operation condition in information storage device, the suspension shape is very important since it correlates to dynamic characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the dynamic characteristics by using finite element analysis, shape optimization. The suspension has various modes according to different kinds of frequency bandwidth. Sway mode and second torsion mode are especially critical among them. (omitted)

  • Tilting bogie system allow the train to pass curve at higher speed without affecting passenger comfort. As the tilting trains offer the optimum means of providing faster and more comfortable rail service with minimum of environmental disturbance and capital investment, mere than 14 countries have now adopted or are about to adopt tilting train technology. The Korean National Railroad is also planing to apply faster tilting train to the areas where the High speed rail service are not provided. This paper describes the parametric study to achieve the optimal suspension parameters of the Bogie for 180 km/h Korean Tilting Train(TTX) from the view point of the vertical and lateral vibration reduction.

  • As a disk drive becomes widely used in portable environments, one of the important requirements is durability under severe environmental condition, especially, resistance to mechanical shock. An important challenge in the disk recording is to improve disk drive robustness in shock environments. If the system comes In contact with outer shock disturbance, the system gets critical damage in head-gimbal assembly or disk. This paper describes analysis of a HGA(head-gimbal assembly) in micro MO drives to shock loading during both non-operating state and operating state. A finite element model which consists of the disk, suspension, slider and air bearing was used to find structural response of micro MO drives. In the operational case. the air bearing is approximated with four linear elastic springs. The commercially available finite element solver, ANSYS/LS-DYNA, is used to simulate the shock response of the HGA in micro MO drives. In this paper, the mechanical robustness of the suspension is simuiated considering the shock responses of the HGA.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a HDD suspension system are investigated by finite element analysis and experimental modal analysis. A finite element model of the suspension Type850 was developed for unloaded case. The calculated vibration modes were compared with measurements and agree well in shape and frequency except some local modes. Local thickness and Young's modulus of the finite element model are updated by modal tuning method to develop the precise FE model. A sensitivity matrix of the natural frequencies for some design variables was calculated using finite difference method. Most natural frequencies calculated by the tuned FE model coincide with the measurements and the errors between them are less than 2%.
