  • This paper provides the results and analyses of investigations into porcelain suspension insulators failures on the KEPCO system. The high failure rate of suspension insulators on distribution lines has been attributed to the volume expansion of the cement, the insulation puncture breakdown of the porcelain and the power arc failure. The utility must use only the good insulators and at least reduce the insulator failure rate. So, this paper recommends that the utility make test criteria(cement expansion test, steep front-of-wave flashover voltage test and power arc test. etc) on the suspension insulators.

  • In this paper, the distribution suspension porecelain insulators which had been used for long periods in the contaminated area were evaluated. The contaminated area is close to the sea and in the high density of industries. The heavily contaminated domestic and imported insulators were investigated by using electrical characteristics, such as power-frequency dry flashover voltage, power-frequency wet, flahover voltage, and leakage current. Also, these electrical results were compared with the contaminants on the surface. From these analysis, we found that the contamination from the industrial dust, only slightly decreased flashover voltage and increased leakage current. Therefore, the electrical properties of insulators used for 30 years in the area of coast and industrial complex were not much changed.

  • The paper deals with the surface discharge characteristics for porcelain suspension insulators. The micro-crystals were crystallized on the surface of glace coated on the porcelain These micro-crystals may affect the electrical Properties such as flashover voltage. However. not much research have been conducted. In this study. we correlated the surface discharge characteristics to the microstructures. It was confirmed that the micro-crystals on the glaze initiated the flashover when the surface was wetted and/or contaminated.

  • This paper presented the results of evaluation of artificially contaminated suspension insulators for transmission lines. The suspension insulators were contaminated with kaolin and clay which were included various amount of natural salt. The degree of contamination were evaluated by measuring equivalent salt deposit density(ESDD). Then, the leakage currents were measured as a function of applied voltage, degree of contamination, humidity.

  • Long span cross-rope suspension structure is an innovative structural system evolved from typical Cross-Rope Suspension (CRS) guyed tower, a type of supporting system with short span suspension cable supporting overhead power transmission lines. In mountainous areas, the span length of suspension cable was designed to be extended to hundreds or over one thousand meters, which is applicable for crossing deep valleys. Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) of overhead power transmission lines was considered to be one of the major factors of its fatigue and service life. In this paper, VIV and its controlling by Stockbridge damper for long span CRS was discussed. Firstly, energy balance method and finite element method for assessing VIV of CRS were presented. An approach of establishing FE model of long span CRS structure with dampers was introduced. The effect of Stockbridge damper for overall vibration of CRS was compared in both theoretical and numerical approaches. Results indicated that vibration characteristics of conductor in long span CRS compared with traditional tower-line system. Secondly, analysis on long span CRS including Stockbridge damper showed additional dampers installed were essential for controlling maximum dynamic bending stresses of conductors at both ends. Moreover, factors, including configuration and mass of Stockbridge damper, span length of suspension cable and conductor and number of spans of conductor, were assessed for further discussion on VIV controlling of long span CRS.

  • The insulating characteristics and temperature rise behaviors of porcelain suspension insulators were investigated. The testing insulators had used in the distribution systems normally and were sampled. Firstly, leakage current was measured and its impedance was calculated. The leakage current of good insulators is 0.2 mA and its impedance is 66 $M{\Omega}$. The worse insulators have lower impedance and the insulators having below 15 $M{\Omega}$ take place flashover at the high frequency voltage flashover test. Secondly, the temperature rise characteristics were analyzed depending on leakage current and its impedance. Surface temperature of insulators was measured for 30 minutes and until its saturation after voltage was applied. The temperature rise of insulators having 15 $M{\Omega}$ is about $14.5^{\circ}C$ above the ambient temperature. Lastly, the heating behaviors of 3 insulators in a string was analyzed. Any insulator in the string does not generate heat so far as it has at least one sound insulator. On the other hand, all the insulators in the string are bad if the string have any heating insulator.

  • When a insulator plate is inserted to the discharge path of a space discharge gap in which the field strength is not uniform, the spark voltage under the atmospheric pressure between the electrodes decreases or rises according to the position of the insulating plate. Also it is reported that if a metallic barrier plate is inserted to the discharge path of the same space discharge gap, similar variations of spark voltage are found. Speaking briefly, mensioned above are the spark voltage characteristics when an insulator or metallic barrier is inserted to the space discharge gap. Also some experimental results, concerning to the surface creepage flash over characteristics at the case when an insulator barrier is inserted to the discharge path of a surface creepage discharge gap, were reported by Peek. But up to now there are no reports on surface flash over voltage characteristics at the case when a metallic barrier is inserted to the surface creepage gap. In this study the effects of a conducting metallic barrier inserted to the path of a surface creepage discharge gap on the flash over voltage characteristics are investigated theoretically and experimentally, and got some important results, clearing the effects of the position and width of a conducting barrier is inserted, the surface flash over voltage characteristics appear as an Inverse N or W Characteristics. Such theoretical or experimental results may have some relation not only with the effects of dry belt and snow on suspension insulators, but also with the effects of dirty zone or water drops on the surface creepage flash over voltage.

  • A strut rubber insulator is used in a suspension component of passenger cars. The uni-axial tension, compression, and the shear test were performed to acquire the constants of the strain energy functions which were Mooney-Rivlin model and Ogden model. The finite element analysis was executed to evaluate the behavior of deformation and stress distribution by using the commercial finite element code MARC ver K6.2. Also, the fatigue tests were carried out to obtain the fatigue life-load curve. The fatigue failure was initiated at the folded position of rubber, which was the same result predicted by the finite element analysis.

  • The 400KN suspended insulator was fabricated with feldspar, quartz, clay and $Al_2O_3$ wt% for extra high voltage. These materials were grinded with ball milling for 25 hours after mixing them. The grinded materials were sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 50 minutes in the tunnel kiln after mading with jiggering method. The sintered density of specimen was reached at 97% in comparison with that of theory. The specimen had the characteristic of temperature rise with the increase of electrical losses. Also, the flexural strength and the fracture toughness of sintered parts respectively were 1658 kg/$cm^2$ and 2.3 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$.

  • The ageing cause in many porcelain suspension insulators which occur on transmission and distribution line with dead-end stings is mechanical stress in interface between porcelain and cement materials. It is known that the principal mechanical stress which give electrical failure is the results of the displacement is due to cement growth. We studied the effect of cement displacement resulting environmental ageing parameters on porcelain insulator mechanical properties for transmission line by simulation (ANSYS/NASTRAN program) and test methods. These simulation analysis and experimental results show that cement volume growth affects severely to be mechanical failure ageing.
