  • The development of railway vehicles such as new mechanism of railway vehicle or design parameters of suspension have been used the application of scaled roller rig to the study of railway vehicle dynamics. In this paper, the critical speed was compared between full scale and 1:5 scale of numerical model. And to verify the simulation results, the critical speed was confirmed using the 1:5 scaled roller rig. According to the results, we expect that the developed roller rig will be used in the study for the dynamic characteristics of railway vehicle.

  • Vibration problems are an intrinsic characteristic in a washing machine owing to rotation working mechanism. Therefore, a right comprehension of working principle and the analysis on dynamic behavior of a washing machine is essential to design anti-vibration or vibration reduction. In this paper, we choose two kinds of a washing machine: a suspension type pulsator/drum type washing machine. Each the structure and working principle of a washing machine is discussed briefly and the dynamic behavior of it is investigated, then, the vibration detection problems of transient or excessive vibration is tented in each category. Some vibration experimented results in a washing machine are presented also.

  • Tool design is carried out for a press forming of a cross member in the rear suspension assembly based on the result of the finite element analysis. The analysis simulates the two-stage stamping process with the initial design and it fully reveals the unfavorable mechanism which develops inferiorities during forming. In this paper, a new design guideline is proposed to modify the process and tool shapes for a single-stage forming process. With the improved tool design, this study fabricates prototypes that satisfy the durability requirement.

  • A CTBA(Coupled Torsion Beam Axle) is a general type for rear suspension of small/compact sedans. It connects left and right knuckles using torsion beam axle and trails rear wheels. Therefore, a CTBA performs a main role of ride & handing. But, a CTBA suspension has main bending mode around 120Hz and causes road booming noise in the interior of a car. Therefore, the mode control of a CTBA is very important for reducing road noise. In this paper, we optimized the shape of a CTBA to reduce road noise considering R&H performance, simultaneously. The vibration mechanism of CTBA was investigated using ODS(Operational Deflection Shape) and mode shape.

  • The shock performance of hard disk drives has been a serious issue for portable computers and AV application HDD. Focusing on the motion of an actuator, we investigated non-operational shock mechanism and studied several parameters that affect the shock performance by experimental analysis. It was found that there are two important factors fort the actuator to endure high shock revel. One is a shock transmissibility and the other is a beating between the arm blade and the suspension. To generalize the shock transmissibility, the concept of shock response spectrum was introduced. The shock response spectrum of the actuator system was obtained experimentally and compared with that of an analytical single degree of freedom model. It was found that there was a good agreement. The first bending natural frequency of the arm blade was found to be the most important factor for the low shock transmissibility. By applying the shock response spectrum and avoiding the beating, we could design an actuator of high shock performance.

  • A "two-fluid" model using thermal eddy diffusivity concept and Lumley's drag reduction theory, is proposed to analyze heat transfer of the turbulent dilute gas-particle flow in a vertical pipe with constant wall heat flux. The thermal eddy diffusivity is derived to be a function of the ratio of the heat capacity-density products .rho. over bar $C_{p}$ of the gaseous phase and the particulate phase and also of the ratio of thermal relaxation time scale to that of turbulence. The Lumley's theory dictates the variation of the viscous sublayer thickness depending on the particle loading ratio Z and the relative particle size $d_{p}$/D. At low loading ratio, the size of viscous sublayer thickness is important for suspension heat transfer, while at higher loading, the effect of the ratio .rho. $_{p}$ over bar $C_{p}$$_{p}$/ .rho. $_{f}$ over bar $C_{p}$$_{f}$ is dominant. The major cause of decrease in the suspension Nusselt number at lower loading ratio is found to be due to the increase of the viscous sublayer thickness caused by the suppression of turbulence near the wall by the presence of solid particles. Predicted Nusselt numbers using the present model are in satisfactory agreements with available experimental data both in pipe entrance and the fully developed regions.

  • The effect of Ca2+ and polyamines on the activity $\beta$-glucan synthetase II(GSII) related to cell wall synthesis was studied in carrot suspension cultured cells. The activity of GS II is four times higher than that of $\beta$-glucan synthetase I in carrot suspension cultured cells and in vitro expreiment, the activity of GSII was increased in response to increase in concentration of Ca2+ and polyamines. When carrot suspension cultured cells were incubated together with Ca2+ and polyamines, the GSII activity was high at 0.1mM of Ca2+ and 1mM of putrescine. Also, polycationic poly-L-lysine and poly-L-ornithine increased about 50% the GSII activity than that of the control, respectively. These results may imply that Ca2+ and polyamines were related to the enzyme activity as a polycationic nature. In addition, verapamil as the calcium channel blocker and flunarizine as an antagonist of calcium mechanism in cytoplasm decreased GSII activity ramarkably, Ca2+ and calmodulin stimulated GSII activity as Ca2+ of free ion rather than Ca2+ calmodulin complex. The effect of 2,4-D on the GSII activity in culture medium is shown to be low at 0.1mg per liter and GSII activity increased about 30% more than that of the 0.1mg/l at the range of 0.3-1.0mg per litere. Cummulative results suggest that Ca2+ and polyfamines stimulate the cell wall synthesis by means of the enhancement of GSII activity responsible for synthesizing the cell wall components.

  • The underlying mechanism of the wind-induced vibration of the hangers of the suspension bridges is still not fully understood at present and hence is comprehensively examined in this study. More specifically, a series of field measurements on the No. 2 hanger of the Xihoumen Bridge was first carefully conducted. Large amplitude vibrations of the hanger were found and the oscillation amplitude of the leeward cable was obviously larger than that of the windward cables. Furthermore, the trajectory of the leeward cable was close to an ellipse, which agreed well with the major characteristics of wake-induced vibration. Then, a theoretical model for the wake-induced vibration based on a 3-D continuous cable was established. To obtain the responses of the leeward cable, the finite difference method (FDM) was adopted to numerically solve the established motion equation. Finally, numerical simulations by using the structural parameters of the No. 2 hanger of the Xihoumen Bridge were carried out within the spatial range of $4{\leq}X{\leq}10$ and $0{\leq}Y{\leq}4$ with a uniform interval of ${\Delta}X={\Delta}Y=0.25$. The results obtained from numerical simulations agreed well with the main features obtained from the field observations on the Xihoumen Bridge. This observation indicates that the wake-induced vibration might be one of the reasons for the hanger oscillation of the suspension bridge. In addition, the effects of damping ratio and windward cable movement on the wake-induced vibration of the leeward cable were numerically investigated.

  • Leaf springs are widely used as a major suspension component in many commercial vehicles, such as buses, trucks, etc. They have a complex dynamic behavior due to the geometric nonlinear and the contact mechanism between the leaves. The interface conditions between the leaves play a significant role in the global behavior of the comfort and ride of the vehicle system. The paper concentrates on modeling leaf springs and contact frictions between the leaves using a nonlinear finite element approach. A nonlinear load-displacement hysteresis curve for the leaf spring is simulated and its results are compared with test results.
