  • Characteristics of suspended sediment concentration of equilibrium and non-equilibrium state caused by waves and currents are investigated by conducting a movable bed experiments in wave tanks. In the region where a downward flux of suspended sediment is larger than a upward flux, time-averaged vertical distribution of suspended sediment does not indicate logarithmic distribution. A new numerical procedure for predicting time-averaged suspended sediment concentration is also proposed based on two-dimensional advective diffusion equation by applying a split-operator approach. It is found that the unposed procedure can predict measured distribution of suspended sediment satisfactorily.

  • The suspended zipper bracing system is suggested to reduce the flaws of ordinary zipper braced and concentric inverted V braced frames. In the design procedure of suspended zipper bracing systems, columns and top story truss elements are strengthened. This bracing system show different performances and characteristics compared with inverted V braced and ordinary zipper frames. As a result, a different response modification factor for suspend zipper frames is needed. In this research paper, the response modification factor of suspended zipper frames was obtained using the incremental dynamic analysis. Suspended zipper braced frames with different stories and bay lengths were selected to be representations of the design space. To analyze the frames, a number of models were constructed and calibrated using experimental data. These archetype models were subjected to 44 earthquake records of the FEMA-P695 project data set. The incremental dynamic analysis and elastic dynamic analysis were carried out to determine the yield base shear value and elastic base shear value of archetype models using the OpenSEES software. The seismic response modification factor for each frame was calculated separately and the values of 9.5 and 13.6 were recommended for ultimate limit state and allowable stress design methods, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of suspended solid concentration in small forest watershed, Hwacheon, Gangwondo. For five rainfall events from July 2013 to August 2013, rainfall, discharge, and suspended solid load has been measured. The results showed that the fist flush effect was observed for suspended solid in each rainfall event, sediment rating curve was obtained with $y=30.029x^{1.573}$ at rising limb and $y=12.902x^{1.8827}$ at falling limb, and EMC (event mean concentration) of suspended solid was calculated to 9.4 mg/L. EMC was compared to the values from the watershed that has various land use types and EMC from forest watershed was much lower that from the crop, paddy or low covered forest watershed.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess spatio-temporal variation of Imha Dam water quality according to suspended sediment algorithm using Landsat and SPOT 5 data. In order to learn synchronous suspended sediment concentrations(SSC) in Imha Dam waters, the satellite remote sensing data are analyzed. The key procedure of this research is that we should know the relationships between suspended sediment concentrations and satellite-detected reflectance. However, the SSC algorithm has the limitation that it must be compared calculated SSC with synchronous ground-truth data in the Dam water. Based upon the linear response from satellite-detected reflectance, SSC algorithm validated an efficient algorithm to estimate proportional factor and then derived an empirical equation far SSC estimations.

  • Total suspended particles in the atmosphere were collected on the quartz fiber filters using an ANdersen Hi-volume air sampler from March 1989 to October 1989 and from June 1990 to February 1991, at Chung-Ang University in Seoul. A total amount of eight heavy metals (Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb, Fe, V, Ti, Mn) in total suspended particles were determined by ICP spectrophotometer. The annual arithmetic mean concentration of total suspended particle was 162.3$\mug/m^3$ and eight metals(Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb, Fe, V, Ti, Mn) were 11.6, 609.2, 3.5, 337.1, 2739.5, 15.1, 89.4 and 100.5ng/$m^3$, respectively. The concentration of total suspended particle was highest in the spring(343.7$\mug/m^3$) and lowest in the summer(91.8$\mug/m^3$). These heavy metals were distinguished into two groups in terms of their particle size distribution. The contents of first-group heavy metals (Fe, Ti, Mn) were increased in accordance with the growth of the particle size. The contents of the second-group ones such as Pb, Cd, V, and Zn, on the contrary, came to increase according as the particle size reduced. Statistical analysis indicated that there was a correlation between total suspended particle and Fe in coarse particles, and between total Suspended Particle and Zn, Pb in fine particle.

  • Water samples were collected at 7 sites located along the River Nakdong on 30 occasions. Water qualities, size and fractal dimension ($d_F$) of suspended particles were measured. Laser light scattering method was used to obtain the size and $d_F$ of suspended particles. The average size of particles in this river ranged from $89{\mu}m$ and $169{\mu}m$, which appears to be relatively coarse compared with other rivers worldwide. The average $d_F$ of suspended particles in this study ranged from 1.8 to 1.9. The correlation analysis showed that DO, TN, $NO_3$ and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ had significant positive relationships with particles size, whereas flow rates and TSS had negative relationships. Interestingly, the factors of which had positive relationships with particles size showed negative relationship with the fractal dimension ($d_F$) of suspended particles. Generally, as the size of particles increased, the fractal dimension of particles decreased which was indicating the shape of the larger particles became more irregular.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of the suspended matter caused by dredging at the northeastern part of Kwangyang Bay and to determine the effect of the single silt protector for it. According to the direction of the tidal current, six sampling stations were chosen from the dredging site to the southeast. At the high tide, the high concentration of the suspended matter was observed below the mid-depth near the dredging site. As the tidal currents were stronger. its concentrations below the mid-depth at the inner stations of the single silt protector were rapidly increased, but those of the outer stations did not show any significant change. The concentrations at the inner stations of the silt protector at that time were from 20~140mg/l and those of the outer stations, which was only about 30 m apart from the inner station, were from 20~30mg/l. It suggests that the large amount of suspended matter caused by dredging were moved to the inner stations near the silt protector at the ebb tide and that the silt protector is very effective for the suspended matter.

  • A new theory of weightless sagging planer elasto-flexible cables under point loads is developed earlier by the authors and used for predicting the nonlinear dynamic response of cable-suspended linear elastic beams. However, this theory is not valid for nonlinear elastic cracked concrete beams possessing different positive and negative flexural rigidity. In the present paper, the flexural response of simply supported cracked concrete beams suspended from cables by two hangers is presented. Following a procedure established earlier, rate-type constitutive equations and third order nonlinear differential equations of motion for the structures undergoing small elastic displacements are derived. Upon general quasi-static loading, negative nodal forces, moments and support reactions may be introduced in the cable-suspended concrete beams and linear modal frequencies may abruptly change. Subharmonic resonances are predicted under harmonic loading. Uncoupling of the nodal response is proposed as a more general criterion of crossover phenomenon. Significance of the bilinearity ratio of the concrete beam and elasto-configurational displacements of the cable for the structural response is brought out. The relevance of the proposed theory for the analysis and the design of the cable-suspended bridges is critically evaluated.

  • During period of the rainy season of spring tide Aug. 2005, the suspended sediment transport rate from Seomjin River increased ten times as high as neap tide of low river discharge. During ebb tide of high terrestrial input, the grain size of suspended particles of both surface and bottom layer of the water column, showed a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at coarse fraction, which suggests a characteristic development of floc-sized particles of low mean effective density. On the contrary, the particles supplied toward upstream of Seomjin river from Gwangyang Bay during flood tide showed a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at finer fraction, possibly due to the resuspension and the deflocculation associated with the increased shear velocity at near bottom. Break-up of large flocs is also suggested by the increased mean effective density. However, settling velocity was lower during flood tide because of smaller grain size. Thus, net deposition of suspended sediment is expected at within Gwangyang Bay instead of upstream of Seomjin River, even though suspended sediment transport rate at near bottom water was three times higher than that at surface water during flood tide.

  • This study is carried out to estimate the rate of sediment transportation both to measure the amount of suspended and bedload sediment that moves on or near the river bed and passes through the cross section of a river in unit time, with suspended and bed load samplers used for the Milyang river and to determine the most satisfactory and convenient formula of some formulas for sediment discharge by comparing the measured rate with the calculated rate. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1) The interrelationship (1) between the total discharge and the total sediment discharge (2) between discharge and suspended sediment load and (3) between discharge and bed load in the Milyang river are (1) i) 4$\leq$Q$\leq$100 C.M.S. Qr=0. 00272 Q0.70 (kg/sec) ii) 150$\leq$Q$\leq$800 C.M.S. Qr=0. 4807 Q0.46 (kg/sec) (2) Qs~=0. 07576 Q1.02 (kg/sec) (3) QB=0. 00957 Q0.44 (kg/sec) 2) The rate of suspended sediment load to total sediment discharge is found to be about; 99%. The suspended load is shown to be almost wash load which consists of silt and clay. 3) The relation between the total discharge and the suspended sediment load that are measured at three medium and small rivers in Korea is Qs=0. 13831 Q0.97 (kg/sec) 4) Brown's formula is determined to be the most convenient formula for application and comparison with observed data obtained for the Milyang river.
