  • Termiticidal activities of Chamaecyparis obtusa were quantitatively evaluated, and the activity differences between supporting materials such as woodmeal and filter paper or between species were defined based on the termiticidal activity value(TAV). It was found that TAV was high in the following order ; C. obtusa>Litsea coreana>C. obtusa var. formosensis>Ternstroemia gymnanthera. In particular, termiticidal activity of C. obtusa heartwood was stronger by 5 to 9 times than that of other three species. Median survival dosage(MSD) of C. obtusa was 108.8 mg. In case of woodmeal or filter paper tests with C. obtusa, termiticidal activities were inversely proportional to logarithms values of an added sample weight and median survival time(MST). The difference of termiticidal activities between woodmeal and filter paper in the methanol extracts was small, but that in the neutral fraction was enormous as 3.21 times. However, termiticidal activity of neutral fraction was corresponded to 17 to 53% of original woodmeal, and 47 to 83% of termiticidal activity was considered as a loss in test process.

  • We studied the effects of aged total petroleum hydrocarbons (aged TPH) on the survival of allochthonous diesel-degrading Rhodococcus sp. strain YS-7 in both laboratory and field investigations. The aged TPH extracted from a crude-oil-contaminated site were fractionized by thin-layer chromatography/flame ionization detection (TLC/FID). The three fractions identified were saturated aliphatic (SA), aromatic hydrocarbon (AH), and asphaltene-resin (AR). The ratio and composition of the separated fractions in the aged TPH were quite different from the crude-oil fractions. In the aged TPH, the SA and AH fractions were reduced and the AR fraction was dramatically increased compared with crude oil. The SA and AH fractions (2 mg/l each) of the aged TPH inhibited the growth of strain YS-7. Unexpectedly, the AR fraction had no effect on the survival of strain YS-7. However, crude oil (1,000 mg/l) did not inhibit the growth of strain YS-7. When strain YS-7 was inoculated into an aged crude-oil-contaminated field and its presence was monitored by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), we discovered that it had disappeared on 36 days after the inoculation. For the first time, this study has demonstrated that the SA and AH fractions in aged TPH are more toxic to an allochthonous diesel-degrading strain than the AR fraction.

  • Background: DNA content analysis of human solid tumor is now widely performed by flow cytometric study. One of the most interesting and potentially important observation in this field is that proliferative activity(S-Phase fraction of cell cycle) may profoundly affect prognosis. Method: S-Phase fraction(SPF) have been measured by flow cytometric method using tumor cells isolated from paraffin embedded tissue. To evaluate the prognostic significance, SPF of squamous lung cancer cell was assessed in 21 patients who died without any specific treatment. Results: 1) Mean survival time of squamous lung cancer patients was 225(${\pm}162$) days. Survival time were shortened, when TNM stage and PS scale were advanced. 2) Mean value of SPF of squamous lung cancer patients was 23.4(${\pm}11.3$)%. SPF had nothing to do with advance of TNM stage and PS scale. 3) Mean survival time of high SPF group(more than 20% of cell proliferation cycle) and low SPF group were 153(${\pm}99$) days and 342(${\pm}180$) days(p<0.01). In each identical TNM stage and PS scale, there were also statistic significant differences in mean survival time between high and low SPF group. Conclusion: On multivariate analysis including TNM stage and performance status, SPF was the significant and independent prognostic factor in the primary squamous lung cancer patients group.

  • Equine semen was analysed for its survival after storage under different conditions. Total 12 ejaculates from 2 Thoroughbred were analysed for general characterisitcs and preservation at low temperature. The sperm fraction, concentration, nd the rate of motile spermatozoa were 57.91ml per ejaculate, 2.18$\times$108/ml and 74.1%, respectively. The survival rate of spermatozoa was highest when diluted semen with E-Z Mixin was stored at 7~8$^{\circ}C$. The optimum survival rate(>54%) can be obtained upto 24h at 7~8$^{\circ}C$. However only 10% spermatozoa survived after 5h storage at 7~8$^{\circ}C$ without use of E-Z Mixin. Other ranges of temperature(15$^{\circ}C$ and room temperature) gave less survival rates(<25%). These results indicate that the extender could be used as a basic solution for the preservation of equine spermatozoa at low temperature. It also provides a practical method for short-term storage of collected equine semen in a simple manner.

  • From September 1985 through September 1989,56 patients with stage IIIB carcinoma of the cervix were treated with radiation therapy with curative aim. The overall survival at 5 year was $38{\%}$. The survival rate was better for patients treated with combined external radiotherapy and high dose rate intracavitary radiotherapy than with external radiotherapy alone. No significant survival difference was observed between the unilateral and bilateral parametrial extension of the tumor Seventeen patients experienced recurrence within the irradiated field with a loco-regional recurrence rate of $30{\%}$. Ten patients had complications ($18{\%}$). The complications were mild in three, moderate in four, and severe in three patients. A study was made on the relationship between the fraction numbers of intracavitary radiotherapy, vaginal packing and the complication rate, respectively. In this analysis author observed that the significant treatment factor influencing the survival of cervical cancer was the use of intracavitary radiation, and meticulous vaginal packing could decrease the late complication rate of radiotherapy of cervical cancer.

  • Background: Wall motion abnormalities may be a significant predictor for long-term survival after coronary bypass surgery (CABG). The aim of this study is to see whether post-infarction wall motion abnormality of left ventricle affect on the long-term survival after CABG. Material and Method: One-hundred and thirty-three patients (male/female, 92/41) undergoing CABG more than 9 years ago were included in this study. Fifty-six patients (M/F, 42/14; mean age, $59.2\pm9.2$ years) with LV wall motion abnormalities were compared to 77 patients (M/F, 50/27; mean age, $58.0\pm7.6$ years) without the wall motion abnormalities. Most patients (112/133, $84.2\%$) had undergone on-pump CABG with the in-situ left internal thoracic artery and free grafts of saphenous vein, in which the proximal and distal anastomoses were done for the single aortic cross-clamping period. Result: Ejection fraction of left ventricle was lower in the group with LV wall motion abnormalities (mean ejection fraction, $48.7\pm13.2\%$) compared to the group without wall motion abnormalities (mean ejection fraction, $57.1\pm10.1\%$)(p=0.0001). Riskunadjusted survivals after CABG in the group without wall motion abnormalities were $85.7\pm4.0\%,\;76.2\pm4.9\%,\;and\;57.2\pm10.3\%$ at 5, 10, and 13 years, respectively, and in the group with wall motion abnormalities were $80.4\pm5.3\%,\;58.7\pm7.3\%,\;and\;51.9\pm7.9\%$ at 5, 10, and 13 years, respectively (p=0.1). In univariate analysis, predictable factors of long-term survival in the patients with LV wall motion abnormalities were LV ejection fraction and post operative outpatient treatment. In multivariate analysis, predictable factor of long-term survival in the patients with the wall motion abnormalities was postoperative outpatient treatment, and that in those without the wall motion abnormalities was female. Conclusion: Although there was no significant survival difference after CABG between the group with LV wall motion abnormalities and that without wall motion abnormalities, the survival in the group with wall motion abnormalities seems to be more decreased. For the patients with LV wall motion abnormalities after myocardial infarction, the post-CABG outpatient treatment is suggested to be an important factor for the long-term survival.

  • Among 165 patients of esophagus cancer treated by either radiation alone or postoperative radiation, median survival period was 6.6 months, $16\%$ 3 years and $8\%$ 5years crude survival. In biphasic plotting of survival curve semilogarithmically all nonresponder died within one year regardless of treatments and in responder each 1, 2, 3 years survival rate was $80\%,\;70\%,\;60\%$ in the group of postoperative radiation among 20 patients ($54\%$ of 37 patients) respectively and $62\%,\;38\%,\; 23\%$ each in the group of radiation alone among 61 patients ($48\%$ of 128 patients) respectively, better survival rate of postoperative radiation vs radiation alone in 3 year (P<0.01). The most common cause of death was dysphagia $55\%$, and majority of patients died by failure to control the disease locally $62\%,\;88\%$ of stricture were associated with persistenece of cancer in esophagus. $50\%$ of patients was found to have locoregional metastatc nodes. Preoperative diagnostic failure rate was for metastatic locoregional nodes was $54\%$, for grossly metastatic nodes $29.7\%$, for blood borne organ metastasis $13.5\%$, and for local extent of the disease $14\%$. The residual cancer at surgical margin o. postitive node was not effectively killed by either 5000 to 5500 cGy conventional radiation or 5290 to 5750 cGy with 115 cGy fraction in 2 times daily; hyperfractionated radiation. However hyperfractionation schedule decreased the both acute and late complications in this study.

  • The observed the toxic effect of WSF (Water Soluble Fraction) on development time, development rate, attachment rate, survival rate and growth of the larva during the early stage of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The time required early juvenile from the fertilized eggs exposed to crude oil (WSF) was about 13 hours in control group. But that of the crude oil dose group takes 12 hours, with shorter compared to control group. Development and attachment rate of the oyster significantly higher in 0.4 and 0.8 mg/L WSF compared to control group (P<0.05) but significantly lower more than 1.6 mg/L WSF (P<0.05). Survival rate of the oyster larva significantly higher in 0.4 and 0.8 mg/L WSF compared to control group (P<0.05) but significantly lower more than 2.4 mg/L WSF (P<0.05). Survival rate of spot showed no significantly difference compared to control group (P>0.05). Shell growth of the oyster were significantly lower more than 1.6 mg/L WSF compared control group (P<0.05). The effect concentration of crude oil showed that more 0.4 mg/L in development and attachment rate and more 1.6 mg/L in growth. Also, chronic exposure of crude oil even effect also in low concentration.
