현장 활용성과 효과 제고를 위한 물질안전보건자료 제도개선 방안 (Improvement of Material Safety Data Sheet Regulation for Enhancing the Effectiveness and Efficiency in the Field)

  • Objective: The Korean Industrial Hygiene Association(KIHA) held a forum on "Improvement of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) regulations for enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency in the field" at its 2018 Winter Conference(February 2, 2018). This article summarized the major consensus opinions developed at the forum. Methods: Since the initial implementation of the MSDS system, the contents of the system have changed and related studies have been reviewed. Before the forum, online questionnaires were developed and opinions on the effectiveness of MSDS program were collected from various strata of the occupational health field. We also summarized the key opinions of companies, trade unions, experts, and government officials as discussed at the forums. Results: A total of 265 opinions were gathered through online questionnaire surveys from safety and health managers, trade unions, government officials, and health professionals. The results of online surveys and discussions showed some differences of opinion, but it was a common perception that the current MSDS system is not working effectively in the workplace. It was considered necessary to strengthen MSDS education and to make it easier for workers to understand and deliver the necessary information. In addition, it was confirmed that the supply of and education on MSDS to small- and medium-sized enterprise workers is not being well executed. In particular, MSDS training for subcontract workers should be carried out under the responsibility of the contracting employer. Conclusions: In order for the MSDS system to serve more effectively in the field in the future, it needs to be improved in terms of the effective education and training considering the type of industry and employment.

Challenges in fibromyalgia diagnosis: from meaning of symptoms to fibromyalgia labeling

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is a contested illness with ill-defined boundaries. There is no clearly defined cut-point that separates FM from non-FM. Diagnosis of FM has been faced with several challenges that occur, including patients' health care-seeking behavior, symptoms recognition, and FM labeling by physicians. This review focuses on important but less visible factors that have a profound influence on under- or over-diagnosis of FM. FM shows different phenotypes and disease expression in patients and even in one patient over time. Psychosocial and cultural factors seem to be a contemporary ferment in FM which play a major role in physician diagnosis even more than having severe symptom levels in FM patients. Although the FM criteria are the only current methods which can be used for classification of FM patients in surveys, research, and clinical settings, there are several key pieces missing in the fibromyalgia diagnostic puzzle, such as invalidation, psychosocial factors, and heterogeneous disease expression. Regarding the complex nature of FM, as well as the arbitrary and illusory constructs of the existing FM criteria, FM diagnosis frequently fails to provide a clinical diagnosis fit to reality. A physicians' judgment, obtained in real communicative environments with patients, beyond the existing constructional scores, seems the only reliable way for more valid diagnoses. It plays a pivotal role in the meaning and conceptualization of symptoms and psychosocial factors, making diagnoses and labeling of FM. It is better to see FM as a whole, not as a medical specialty or constructional scores.

의과대학 학생들의 생활실태 및 학생지원 방안 (Assessing Life Surveys of Medical Students and Need-Based Student Services)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of a study on the psychological state, lifestyle, self-management ability, and academic adaptation of medical students, and to present examples of improvement of a student support center based on the results. A medical school in Daegu has been surveying the living conditions of students every year for 6 years since 2016. More than 60% of medical students experienced depression and more than 70% experienced stress, but these rates have significantly improved over the past 5 years. There were many cases of drinking or smoking to relieve stress, but the frequency of drinking recently decreased substantially. Some students had difficulties in emotional regulation (11.5%) and time management (16.6%), and challenges in planning and self-management increased significantly during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The satisfaction and adaptability of medical students are high, but the number of students who are not satisfied with but negative response rate is 2%-3% in every year. However, satisfaction has significantly increased in tandem with curriculum changes and COVID-19. Based on these data, the counseling system was reorganized to support psychological stability, the medical humanities curriculum was improved, and changes in actual quality of life were induced by developing and operating non-curricular programs. Furthermore, standardized questionnaires will be developed and data from many medical schools will be shared, which is expected to support medical students more effectively.

직무만족 조사에서의 질문 순서 및 질문 의도 효과에 관한 연구 (A Study on Question-Order and Question-Intention Effects in Surveys of Job Satisfaction)

  • 자기보고식 설문 조사는 상황적 요인 및 개인적 특성에 따라 응답 결과가 달라질 수 있다. 본 연구는 산업 및 조직심리학 분야에서 널리 연구되고 있는 직무만족 변인을 중심으로 설문 조사 시 질문 순서 및 질문 의도가 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 설문지는 전반적 질문과 세부적 질문의 배치 순서에 따른 질문 순서 차이 그리고 직무만족 또는 직무불만족 측정에 따른 질문 의도 차이에 따라 총 4종류를 사용하였다. 94명의 직장인을 대상으로 한 설문 조사 결과 기존 연구와 달리 전반적 질문이 먼저 제시된 경우에서 전반적 질문과 세부적 질문에 대한 응답 간 상관이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 통계적으로 유의한 수준은 아니었으나 직무만족 질문이 직무불만족의 질문에 비해 대부분의 영역에서 만족도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로 연구의 의의와 한계점 및 향후 연구방향을 살펴보았다.

중소기업에서 경영자의 배려와 용서가 학습조직 활동과 조직성과에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Executive Compassion and Forgiving Behavior on Organizational Activities and Performance)

  • Purpose - Currently, strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in terms of competitiveness is a key economic issue. However, the problem is that many SMEs lack the internal competence required to cope with a rapidly changing market structure. Such problems can act as an obstacle to economic development, yet most SMEs in Korea are dealing with this problem today. A company's source of competitive advantage is changing from quantity to quality, facility to knowledge, and hardwork to creativity. Under such circumstances, a company should place learning and sharing of knowledge and continuously creating new knowledge as its priority. This study aims to identify the effect of a chief executive officer's (CEO) compassion and forgiveness - positive factors in organizational emotion - on learning organization activities and organizational performance, through a theoretical comparison. Research design, data, and methodology - For this study, SMEs based in Daejeon and Chungcheong area were selected. To secure credibility of the data, the subjects were selected among those who have been working at the business for six months or longer. The survey was conducted for 30 days from March 5, 2015 to April 5, 2015. Both offline and online surveys were conducted. Fifty companies were chosen and 700 questionnaires were distributed, with 506 used for analysis. Fifty subject companies (25 from Daejeon, 10 from Chungnam, 10 from Chungbuk, and five from Sejong) were selected and the objective, target, and survey content were explained to a manager at each company either face-to-face or on the phone. Of the total of 700 questionnaires distributed via mail or e-mail, 78.6% or 550 copies were returned. Excluding 44 insufficient questionnaires, the remainder, 506 questionnaires, were used for analysis. Results - This study analyzed how the CEO's compassion and forgiveness affects learning organization activities and organizational performance. First, compassion of the CEO at the SMEs directly affected the learning organization activities and indirectly affected the organizational performance. Second, forgiveness of the CEO at the SMEs did not affect the learning organization activities and organizational performance directly or indirectly. Conclusions - The study conclusions are as follows. First, CEO compassionate behavior at the SMEs was a significant variable that directly and indirectly affected learning organization activities and organizational performance. Therefore, the CEO of an SME can create a positive organizational atmosphere through compassionate behaviors in the organization. Second, the forgiving behavior of the CEO did not have direct or indirect effects on learning organization activities and organizational performance. However, the reason for a CEO to continue his or her forgiving behavior is because it strengthens employee resilience, commitment, and self-efficacy to protect the organization from negative influences such as layoffs, risks, and wrongdoings. The action of forgiveness does not have direct or indirect effects. However, the CEO shall continue such behavior to strengthen members' physiological resilience, commitment, and self - effectiveness, and to protect the organization from risks including layoff and external negative factors.

한국적인 맛 관련 소비자 식태도 성향 분류 척도 개발 (Developing an Attitude Scale for Korean Style Flavors)

  • The consumer acceptance of food is not only affected by the sensory characteristics of food but also by the non-food factors, including food experience, consumption frequency, and food attitudes. Therefore, food attitude scales such as the food neophobic scale, VARSEEK scale, Dutch restrained eating scale, health taste attitude scale, etc. have been developed and effectively used to predict consumer liking and behaviors. Since the globalization of Korean food is currently one of the hottest topics in the Korean food industry, the aim of this study was to identify the tastes and flavors that may represent Korean cuisine. Additionally, an attitudinal scale for Korean taste and flavors was developed, which can then be utilized to predict a consumer's liking of Korean food. In the first stage of the experiment, the representative taste and flavors of Korean cuisine was surveyed by a Korean culinary expert group (n=23) and general consumers (n=62). As a result of these surveys, 4 types of flavors, hot pepper flavor, 'goso' flavor, garlic flavor, and fermented flavor were shown to be the most representative flavors of Korean cuisine. Based on these results, the second stage of the experiment was carried out to develop an attitudinal scale for Korean style flavors. Eleven to 17 questionnaires were developed for each of the 4 types of flavors. The survey consisted of a total of 53 questionnaires and 154 female consumers and 158 male consumers participated in the survey. The data was analyzed by factor analysis. For each type of flavor, the final attitudinal questionnaires were selected based on the following criteria: 1. high absolute factor loading value, 2. carrying clear meaning of the corresponding flavor attitude, and 3. delivering the meaning sufficiently when translated into other language. The final Korean style flavor attitude scale consisted of 7 hot pepper flavor, 6 'goso' flavor, 6 garlic flavor, and 7 fermented flavor questionnaires. In the next step of this study, experiments will be carried out to validate the Korean style flavor attitude scale.

표본조사에서 무응답 가중치 조정층 구성방법에 따른 효과 (Forming Weighting Adjustment Cells for Unit-Nonresponse in Sample Surveys)

  • 표본조사에서 무응답은 비 표본추출오차를 발생시키는 중요한 원인 중 하나이다. 단위무응답이 발생하는 경우 무응답에 의한 편향을 줄이는 동시에 추정의 정도를 향상시키기 위해 단위무응답 조정층을 구성해 무응답 가중치 조정을 하는 것이 일반적이다. 본 연구에서는 무응답 조정층 구성과 관련된 기존의 이론들을 정리하고 어업총조사 자료를 이용한 실증적인 모의실험을 통해 효과적으로 무응답 조정층을 구성하는 방안에 대해 살펴본다. 모의실험결과 응답성향에 따른 조정층 구성보다는 예측평균을 기준으로 한 조정층 구성이 효율성 측면에서 효과적인 것으로 나타났으며, 아울러 다른 관심변수에도 적용될 수 있는 로버스트한 조정층 구성을 위해서는 예측평균만을 고려하는 것보다 응답성향과 예측평균을 모두 고려한 조정층 구성방법이 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 한편 무응답 조정을 위한 응답률 산출에 있어서 설계가중치의 적용 필요성에 대해 살펴본 결과 설계가중치 적용 여부는 추정결과에 거의 영향을 주지 않는다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.

여성알코올중독환자의 소양증에 관한 연구 (A study on pruritus of female alcoholics)

  • 알코올은 인체에 영향을 미치지 않는 곳이 없을 정도로 여러 질환들을 야기 시킨다. 이로 인해 알코올중독과 관련된 여러 연구가 진행되고 있으나 알코올중독환자의 피부질환에 관련된 연구는 국내에서 찾아보기 어렵다. 이에 민감한 피부를 가진 여성알코올중독환자의 피부질환중 소양증에 관한 연구를 하였다. 2013년 05월 1일~2013년 5월 20일까지 전국의 알코올중독치료병원 4곳에서 여성알코올중독환자 114명의 설문지와 청주, 성남시 일반인 106명의 설문지를 토대로 비교연구를 하였고, 연구 결과 알코올중독환자가 일반인에 비해 소양증 점수가 더 높았고, AUDIT-K점수와 소양증점수는 양의 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 음주주기, 음주량도 소양증에 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구 자료가 알코올중독 환자의 피부치료의 기초자료로 활용되며 앞으로 알코올중독환자의 피부연구의 활성화를 기대한다.

Assessment of the Dieticians' Attitudes about Functional Foods and Their Needs for Training

  • The object of this study was to examine attitudes and knowledge of Korean dieticians about functional foods. We investigated their perceived knowledge and their attitudes regarding risks versus benefits, and recommendation about the use of functional foods; as well as their frequency of personal use, and the educational supports and training needs of dieticians. We developed a questionnaire to assess the dieticians' attitudes related to functional foods. This questionnaire was used for characterizing functional food-related attitudes on the basis of factor and reliability analysis in the following study. The questionnaires were distributed to 802 practicing dieticians working in Daegu and Gyeongsangbukdo. A total of 244 respondents (mean age $34\pm5.7$ years) returned the completed questionnaires through online surveys. Descriptive statistics and ANOV A were used to analyze data. Fewer than $2\%$ of dieticians claimed themselves to be knowledgeable about functional foods, more than $79\%$ consumed functional foods more than once a week, and $88\%$ of dieticians expressed an interest in receiving training about functional foods. Dieticians had favorable attitudes about the rewards from functional foods but were not confident about the safety and usage recommedation of these foods. The level of knowledge and educational support at their universities about functional foods affected the dieticians' attitudes regarding the rewards from and recommendation about the use of functional foods. These results suggest a need for additional educational opportunities to facilitate a better understanding of the risks and benefits of functional foods and their proper usage. Dietetics professionals must adapt to changes in health practices through effective educational programs integrating sufficient knowledge about functional foods.

전수조사를 통만 국내 유전자변형생물체의 연구 동향 분석 (An analysis of research trends on living modified organisms in Korea through questionnaire surveys)

  • We analyzed the current research trends of living modified organisms (LMO) by questionnaires in the interest of making biosaftey laws and policies in Korea. We executed a pre-survey at the Crop Functional Genomics 2004 conference and obtained LMO research information from 423 LMO research organizations, including 32 national research institutes, 314 universities, and 77 industries. We found that the total 59 kinds of hosts including 26 kinds of plants, 15 kinds of animals, and 18 kinds of microbes were used for LMO research and E. coli was the most common host. The risk of the most experimental hosts was below a biosafety level of 1 (73.8%) and 2 (25.9%). LMO development use purpose was implemented in various developmental uses: 51.3% in test and research use, 19% in health and medical use, and 12.9% in agriculture use. The experiment product, waste product, and products of host for LMO development were 327.2, 223.6, and 13.5 in number of plants; 280.6, 52.4, and 8.7 in number of animals; and $8.3\;{\times}\;10^{11}CFU$, $7.7\;{\times}\;10^{11}CFU$, and $6.5\;{\times}\;10^{11}CFU$ in microbes in 2004. The survey results about how to possess the LMO were very unreliable, because only 10.6% of the researchers returned the questionnaires. Consequently, we strongly suggest the scientific organizations as well as scientists should have more interests in biosafety of LMO research and an LMO biosafety management system should be developed for Korea's future biotechnology.
