  • Purpose: The Korean Gastric Cancer Association (KGCA) has been conducting nationwide surveys on patients with surgically treated gastric cancer, every 5 years, since 1995. This study details the results of the survey conducted in 2019. Materials and Methods: This survey was conducted from March to December 2020 using a standardized case report form, which was sent to every member of the KGCA via e-mail. We collected data on 54 items, including patient demographics, tumor characteristics, surgical procedures, and surgical outcomes. We compared the results of the 2019 survey with previous surveys. Results: Data of 14,076 cases were collected from 68 institutions. The mean patient age was 62.9 years and the proportion of patients who were aged ≥71 years increased from 9.1% in 1995 to 28.8% in 2019. The proportion of upper-third tumors steadily increased from 11.2% in 1995 to 20.9% in 2019 and that of early gastric cancer increased from 57.7% in 2009 to 63.6% in 2019. Regarding operative procedures, a total laparoscopic approach was used in more than half of the cases (55.1%) in 2019. The most common anastomotic method was the Billroth II procedure (45.0%) after distal gastrectomy and double tract reconstruction (81.2%) after proximal gastrectomy in 2019. The postoperative mortality rate was 1.0%, and the overall postoperative complication rate was 14.5%. Conclusions: The results of the 2019 nationwide survey demonstrate the current status of gastric cancer treatment in Korea. This information will provide a basis for gastric cancer research in the future.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of reflective thinking-based laboratory report on learners' metacognition and inquiry skills. In a general physics experiment class consisting of 11 experiments, 20 college students used reflective thinking-based laboratory report, and then the changes of their metacognition and inquiry skills were compared with those of who used general laboratory report. The opinions of students used reflective thinking-based laboratory report were surveyed. The results showed that their metacognitions were increased more than those of comparison group that used common experiment report. Their inquiry skills also were increased as much as comparison group's. According to the survey results, they recognized that reflective thinking-based laboratory report helps to improve their performance, metacognitions, and inquiry skills.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an environmental report for children and to examine the learning effects of the environmental report on elementary school students. This study is carried out by the survey. The results of this study are as follows. First, the Environmental Report for children, which consists of 8 subjects related to the environmental policy in Korea. 1) Green Growth and Sustainable Policy, 2) Climate Change, 3) Water Supply and Sewage Policy, 4) Sustainable Watershed Management, 5) Conservation of Biodiversity, 6) Resource Recirculation, 7) Environmental Health for Children, and 8) Environmental Dictionary, was systematically developed. Second, the Environmental report developed was examined the effects to third and fourth grade elementary school students in Incheon and Daegu. By dividing elementary school students into two groups: A Control group and an Experimental group, the lessons were respectively executed. In conclusion, the Environmental Report leads to good effects when it is applied to both Environmental Education and the public relation of the Environmental Policy in Korea. Finally, it would be expected to be efficient in learning Sustainable Development and the Environmental Policy.

  • Objectives : This study were aimed to estimate the needs for clinical research educational program development focused on oriental medicine. Methods : Department Medical Research of Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine surveyed 204 certified subjects in total by using web-based questionnaires through e-mail from Jan. 17th to Jan. 31th, 2007. Reply from 62 on-line correspondents were collected and statistically analyzed. Results : The number of clinical trial involving oriental medicine continues to increase. According to the survey, many Issues were raised as problems such as difficulty of recruitment, lack of fund and lack of stepped program. Emphasized issues were clinical research methodologies, development of protocols and case report form (CRF), and Regulations including Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) in these three consecutive education training program. Conclusion : The results of this study may contribute to the development of an educational program for oriental medicine, a program that should be taken into consideration for developing practical items, such as, problem-based learnings which reflects participants' actual needs in their works. • A nationwide nutrition survey began when the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) requested assistance from international relief organizations in 1997 due to flooding in 1995-1996, followed by the worsening food shortage peak in 1997. According to reported data for the 15 years since the active intervention and assistance from international societies, the malnutrition and mortality rates of children in the DPRK have improved. However, the prevalence of the stunting reported in the latest 2012 report is 27.9%, which is still a moderate-severe level, and worrisome in terms of international standards. In particular, the prevalence in Ryangangdo, which is regarded as the worst region in the DPRK, is 39.6%, which is a very high level of stunting. To alleviate such regional deviation will be a major task for future assistance. In addition, one cannot emphasize too highly the importance of early nutritional assistance for pregnant women and infants, considering that the recovery from stunted growth is low after two years of age, and the aftereffects would continue for the rest of their lives.

  • In the present paper, the regulatory compliance on the report responsibility relating to marine pollution prevention working plan for ship recycling in accordance with the Marine Environment Management Law in Korea was examined. In addition, plans to raise the regulatory compliance based on the results of the regulatory compliance questionnaire survey and interview between the concerned parties were suggested. The result of the regulatory compliance revealed that the degree of regulatory compliance of all groups is 52.7%, the government official group is 56.5%, marine industry related group is 48.6% and ship recycling group is 48.6%. Counterplans to raise the regulatory compliance, such as public relations for the ship recycling and marine industry related group and the development of simple standardized report form were suggested based on the results of the regulatory compliance survey.

  • Background: This study examines the clinical effect on quality of life of herbal medicine and local acupuncture point stimulation administration for a cervicogenic dizziness (CGD) patient. This case report was described in accordance with CARE guidelines. Case Report: A 25 year-old female patient suspected to be suffering from CGD was examined. The patient was treated with herbal medicine and local acupuncture point stimulation. We used the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6), Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), 36-Item Short Form Health Survey Version 2 (SF-36v2), and verbal numerical rating scale (VNRS) to assess the patient's symptoms. As new herbal medicine and local acupuncture point stimulation were applied, dizziness, headache, and neck pain symptoms improved. Quality of life affected by the symptoms significantly improved. Adverse effects were not observed. Conclusions: This study may suggest that herbal medicine and local acupuncture point stimulation may be effective therapy for the treatment of typical symptoms in patients with CGD.
